Ok, I hear all this and raise you a Lilt Home Perm!
I counter with Prom.....the only home perm that could curl my hair. I'd give you a photo if I knew how to do it.

No, my mother never made me wear them - I did it voluntarily. Then I graduated to juice cans. Oh, and I ironed my hair too. By iron I mean the type you iron your clothes with. I also used tape on my bangs. Aw, the memories. And yes, I do know what Dippity Do is. Yup! This was me, also. Don't forget the tape on the sideburns to make them curl forward. . My mother called them kiss curls.

Sharla, this is an awesome thread!
Who remembers Tame Creme Rinse?
ETA: My sister had stick straight hair, I had very naturally curly hair. She would get Tonette Perms that came with paper dolls. I always cried because I wanted those paper dolls.

I was just in the Dollar Tree store earlier today and noticed a display of brush and pink snap curlers, and I think there were foam ones too. I had no idea they were still availble to buy!
I had thick, wiry, frizzy red hair in my younger days and my Mom struggled with every kind of curler known to man to try and tame it. Didn't work....but it's calmed down over the years, and at 62 it's faded to a strawberry blonde, but I'm happy to have a headful of thick hair. I have it cut the way it wants to go, and I can just blow it dry and it usually looks good. I sure hated it as a young teen though!
Oh and Tame was a staple in our hair care arsenal! I'd forgotten about it!

Yes, there were a few times when I wore those. However, they were preferable to allowing my mom to blow dry my hair with the first hand-held blow dryers that came out - my hair would get sucked into the mechanism and getting it back out was a painful ordeal. I'd rather have the brush curlers and sit under the dryer hood.

My mom and grandmother always had curlers. The hard plastic pink ones were the worst. Funny, but I loved "setting" my Grams hair for her. Then she would wrap it with tp or her silky net cap. I don't know how she would sleep in it, I tried a few times as a kid in the 1970s and it hurt so much! I have these www.walmart.com/ip/Conair-Curl-Body-Brush-61146-Rollers-36-Ct/14648332 and I do use them once in a while. The curl will last all day. If I use the hot iron, it will end up falling straight again at some point. My kids think it's hilarious and my 4 year old of course wants them in his hair too.

Oh, yes, that was a Saturday night ritual so that our hair would be ready for church the next morning. I remember sitting on the floor between her knees and hearing her constantly telling me to be still. LOL. She also used dippity doo. Me too! I can even remember the smell of that dippity doo.

No, because I've always had short hair. When she was alive, I use to set my Grandma's hair with them though

We had the pink foam curlers. Every Saturday night we had to sit on the piano stool and sit still while we watched Solid Gold. It was my dad's job and he would pull our hair so tight our eyes pulled up. All the while he's swearing saying sit still dammit and you'll be done quicker!

No, because I've always had short hair. The useless, lying, worthless bottle of Johnson's detangler was why I ended up with short hair at 7. My mom gave up. She wouldn't let me grow my hair out until 6th grade and I was able to do my hair completely by myself. I spent 3 years being mistaken for a boy my hair was cut so short.

cadoodlebug, I remember Tame creme rinse! And Prell with the pearl in the bottom! Anyone else use that? My sister and I still have a habit of calling it "creme rinse" instead of conditioner and our kids look at us like we're off a half a bubble. What is creme rinse? You mean conditioner? We also used a lot of Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.

For real head torture you really can`t beat having your hair rolled in rags and tied into little bumpy knots that kept your head off the pillow. Think it was called rag rolled curls or some such. Eat your heart out Shirley Temple, and before you ask there are no photos of me with my head covered in little fabric knots.

Tame creme rinse... loved the smell of that stuff. Mix a bit up in a glass of water and pour it over your wet hair. And we used either Prell or Breck shampoo. I ran across some hand lotion a few years ago that smelled just like Tame and it was pink too. It wasn't the best lotion I've ever used but I loved it just for the fragrance. Took me back to being a teenager in the 60's. Good times.

I slept in them for years! My mom did not make me wear them but it was the only way to make my straight hair not perfectly flat. I actually got the point where I didn't even feel them anymore.

My Mom still uses these, bobby pins and all! I think the only time she did my hair with them was for my first Holy Communion, hair down to my ass and had never been cut. One of my 'gifts' was to be able to cut my hair after. And I also have a pic of my now 15yo. DD from when she was about 9 yo., Mom did her up in the curlers too. Lol

This was my bouffant bubble head, probably around 1962. It doesn't look that big in pic, however hurricane Bertha wouldn't have moved a hair on that head.

No more tears, my ass. I have never heard of tape for straight bangs. How did it not rip hair out of your head when you took it off? Or was it not sticky tape? They made tape just for your hair, but you could use scotch tape in a pinch. You just put it on the very edge of your bangs so you had the minimal amount of hair on the tape. I think it mostly worked. OMG THEY STILL MAKE IT !

My mom was big on the pink sponge rollers for my hair! I remember we had a babysitter with long long hair and she would wash it in the bathtub while she was over and then set it on orange juice cans! These are what I had to wear too. I have stick straight hair and my mother insisted on rolling my hair after each hair washing. I never understood what was wrong with just leaving my hair straight.

Nope, my mom doesn't even know how to use a curling iron (she has long straight "hippy" hair that she usually wears in a bun). I did wear the pink rollers though and those rubber "stick" ones from the 80s. I don't know why I bothered, I'd look like Shirley Temple for about an hour and then it would just be a God awful mess. Definitely not laughing here, I use large velcro rollers too, my hair is thin, fine and completely flat otherwise.

This brings back a lot of memories. My mom wore those brush rollers. She would use either sock rollers (socks rolled up and tied) or the pink rollers on us.
