the judge is running unopposed.. there is a local action to have him recalled. the local reaction is overwhelmingly negative.

OMG 3jaysanc, I am so sorry that this happened to you. What you wrote was so powerful. It made me cry for you. {{{Hugs}}}
I wish, like the others, that this particular judge could read this and hopefully understand the true horror an experience like this is.

I am so sorry. This whole case is a travesty. I hope the judge is not re-elected to his seat. One wonders, if the defendant was a young black man from a junior college or no college at all, if the sentence would have been much harsher. I don't wonder.

I can't even imagine your pain, OP. It took great courage to share this with us. I'm so sorry for all that you've endured, both at the time of the assault and everything since.
I can't help but wonder if that young woman was the judge's daughter or sister or friend. Would he go so lightly on the rapist? How can he possibly live with himself?

OP, thank you for sharing. That is unbelievably horrible. I cannot imagine that suffering in your life. I hope that someday, if even for a second you have some sort of freedom from those memories. You have every right to be heard and have your feelings known. You should be angry.

Would you be willing to write a letter to this judge? Clearly he does not understand the gravity of this man's crime. It might not change the outcome of this case, but could affect others. I'm so sorry for what happened to you. I like this idea. It is proactive, especially in a time that I feel particularly helpless. I won't be able to write or describe what happened as eloquently as the victim did in her letter to the rapist but it is certainly worth the effort. Your OP was the most powerful post I have EVER read on this message board! And I think while the victim's letter was 7 pages long, yours is very eloquent and succinct and right to the point. HUGS, you are so strong! You make me believe in hope. Reading the comments on that Washington Post article, and some of them by women no less, made me want to hurl my computer at the wall. No one is talking about the emotional damage the victim is suffering but shame, poor privileged athlete. Wonder what the sentence would have been had it been someone from a different lifestyle.

(((( 3jaysanc )))) You've probably heard this before but, you're a very brave woman. I'm so sorry this was done to you. I hope that shitheel-entitled Stanford dad starts getting all kinds of illuminating letters. NO - his decision to rape an unconscious woman caused the "broken and shattered family", not the verdict. Unbelievable. That the dad can't see that speaks volumes.

Oh-- but he's doing such a great community service by teaching young people about the consequences of binge drinking. Because--yeah – if the victim hadn't been drunk, it would never have happened.

Can the victim appeal the sentence? Or ask for a retrial because they had a biased judge who probably should have recused himself because he was a previous coach at the school?

I was chilled when I read the dad's letter to the judge. I was sick when I thought about the victim. OP - what you wrote was so intense and just solidifies my thoughts that there have to be some sort of sanction on this (and any) judge. The letter alone would want me to tack on extra years, but 6 months out of this man's life? What about the victim who will never ever be the same!!! I am outraged with you.

Here's how a good father handles something like this. Many years ago, a friend's brother was part of a fraternity gang rape. Just putting it out there - he participated. There were many factors that contributed to his participation: peer pressure, alcohol, gang mentality etc... but he was involved.
HIs parents sat him down and said: "we will support you through this as long as you do everything in your power to make amends and make sure it never happens to anyone again." He pled guilty, testified against his fraternity brothers and has spent the rest of his life trying to make restitution by being a good person and a strong male role model to at risk youth. And his parents did what they promised - they stood by him and supported him. They never made excuses for him and never allowed him to make excuses for himself. This freaking "boo hoo, he won't eat steak" letter makes me sick. It's obvious where this kid got his character from.

OP - You are a courageous woman - being so strong after going through what happened to you and sharing with us. Powerful, eloquent words.
My heart breaks for this woman who endured more than any human should have - by the rapist and the legal system. I also signed the petition. It's beyond time for women to take more control of the systems that allow this type of travesty to occur.
As moms, we have to all raise our boys to act better than this idiot kid did.

Makes me sick to read this. I read the one article that showed his smiling face and talked about how great of a swimmer he was and what this was going to do to HIM. The Washington Post should be ashamed. I have no words for the father. The whole story just makes me mad and sad for the victim. I thought we had come further.

Thanks. Writing this out and a good, angry cry has worked wonders. I don't live in that kind of pain every day but I don't ever get to forget. I am just at a loss when it comes to this case. Would you be willing to write a letter to this judge? Clearly he does not understand the gravity of this man's crime. It might not change the outcome of this case, but could affect others. I'm so sorry for what happened to you. I'm having the exact same thought! Just exactly what you wrote here - it was raw and emotional and REAL.
Sending you prayers for peacefulness.

This is the type of situation that make me think there is a place for vigilantes. 3jaysanc you are eloquent and your story should be published on the front page of this asshole judge's local newspaper.

Thank you for sharing your story op. The only silver lining I see as that he's not permitted to return to Stanford and his conviction is against the USA Swimming code of contact preventing him from participating in the Olympic trials. At least some organizations don't excusr rapists. The silver lining I saw was that two male graduate students did the right thing and made sure he was caught. If they hadn't been there, it's likely he never would've been caught. And given his attitude and his father's words, I suspect this isn't a first time thing - just the first time he was caught. So disgusting on so many levels. To the OP, thanks for sharing your story, even though it's a horrible one. I'm so sorry for what you have gone through and you are brave to share. I think writing a letter to the judge is a very good idea. ((hugs))

The special douche bag snowflake can't have a criminal record! I have no doubt they are hoping for a chance at pleading for lesser charges that will allow him to become a member of USA Swimming. If the prosecutor agrees he/she might convince me to reinstate public flogging.
