This thread is awesome. To the people who were socializing in the 70s, did you actually eat these jello salad things? I can't imagine being served something like what's pictured without it being a horrifying joke. Jello "salads" were a common side dish at every special meal and potluck. I can't remember ever having a holiday meal without one (usually of the fruity variety). Someone (probably the people who make Jello) no doubt promoted it as essential way for a housewife to raise her social standing with a well-presented, beautifully molded concoction. You can probably find a picture of one in every women's magazine from the 50s through the 70s. Americans can be a gullible bunch. Those things made their way to Europe, too. Or at least to Norway.

So I was on my way to bed and opened Peas for a minute since I haven't been here for a few days ..... that was a fun mistake. I'm just so tickled to have been advanced to old biddy so soon before my older sisters. They are gonna be so jealous! Lept right over them in one single post on this glorious thread full of jelloed Hoff banana erections that is sure to be a record for .... um.... for ... um.... awesome random nothingness! aemetcrue - Aren't you just the sweetest thing asking about our husbands and our homes? My husband's been resting in his grave 5 years to the day now. Thanks so much for asking.

To the people who were socializing in the 70s, did you actually eat these jello salad things? I can't imagine being served something like what's pictured without it being a horrifying joke. I remember lots of "jello salads," but they were almost always made in ring molds. For instance, my mother made one at Christmas that was red jello with strawberries, pineapple, and walnuts inside. The photos here of turkey-shaped and fish-shaped creations, colored to replicate the creature? Nope, never saw those in real life. They jello rings probably caught on because they were easy to make the night before and were colorful. And they made "salad" taste like dessert, so kids liked them at holiday dinners. Just like several years later, when "taffy apple salad" was all the rage. (How that is not a dessert is beyond me...) ohhhhh...when we cleaned out my grandmother's house some how I ended up with a couple of her jello molds. None of them are cool shapes though, just the round domed shape-but, and this is why I kept them, there is one big one and about six small ones just like it. I keep thinking I can make some kind jinga inspired tower of jello.

You could probably do a lemon jello with yogurt or whatever else makes jello a creamy color and line the molds with graham cracker crumbs!!! A fabulous edible sandcastle creation!!!

We had a jello thing at our wedding reception. XMIL made it, yes it was 1979 before everyone got all catery and such. So potluck it was. Anyway back to the jello, strawberry jello in a huge cake like pan. It had strawberries and pieces of angel food cake in it. The whole pan was then covered with cool whip. Think strawberry shortcake ala jello.

Thank the Lord you posted your opinion on this subject in such a crass and hateful manner. This is the kind of direction a feeble little woman like me needs. I mean, since I am just a "lady", I certainly couldn't figure out a big scary thing like "politics" on my own. Again, my thanks to you. :eyeroll:

SaveSaveI have no idea why but this picture makes me think of the Mr. Rogers episode when they went to the Crayola factory. At least I think it was Mr. Rogers. I loved that segment.

My favorite dish at Thanksgiving when I was a kid was a pale green Jello mold with pineapple, pecans and either cottage cheese or marshmallows. We had that one too minus the pecans. It was delicious. I think it was the pineapple.

My favorite dish at Thanksgiving when I was a kid was a pale green Jello mold with pineapple, pecans and either cottage cheese or marshmallows. I have kind of "rediscovered" (revisited?) the jello fluff "salads"...which are definitely dessert in my neck of the woods...like the ambrosia one with fruit cocktail (not my fave) the orange-pineapple or pistachio one. They are mostly all a combo of cook n serve pudding, jello, marshmallows and fruit, and sometimes cool whip. I can never remember which size jello and pudding boxes I need so I often have to do a quick Google search and SO many variations call for cottage cheese which makes me want to barf. They swear you can't tell it's cottage cheese. Why, why, why?? Cottage cheese makes me want to do the cat-hairball thing just to think about it.

This thread is awesome. To the people who were socializing in the 70s, did you actually eat these jello salad things? I can't imagine being served something like what's pictured without it being a horrifying joke. Good lord, no! Not my mom. My grandmother might have made something weird and jello-y once or twice for company dinners, but we knew enough to know it was icky. Now my mom did make jello sometimes for dessert, but it only had fruit in it and it was in a bowl, not molded. My favorite dish at Thanksgiving when I was a kid was a pale green Jello mold with pineapple, pecans and either cottage cheese or marshmallows. Okay, there's something seriously wrong with you if you can't tell the difference between cottage cheese and marshmallows. Although I will say, that just made me remember that my mom put marshmallows in, too, with the fruit in the jello. So I guess I'm edging toward the weird '60s jello dishes, after all.

We made it with Jello brand pistachio pudding. Of course we used a jello mold! It was a "special occasion" dessert. Served only at Easter and Thansgiving or Christmas. Lol
