I wonder if this will change voting in November. To be honest, I looked up my Republican candidate and will be sure to vote against party lines in November. So disgusted.

I see this a good news bad news scenario.
Good news is the news station are not talking just about Trump but about the sit-in.
Bad news is Congress has reached a new low when one side has to resort to filibusters and sit-ins to get bills to the floor or debates about subjects the majority of Americans want handled. In some form at least. The actions by both sides have turned this country into a laughing stock. Besides not getting anything done unless it's a crisis.

Would you be applauding if the GOP had done this? It would depend on what the issue was, of course. In this case we are talking about gun control. If my Democrats were blocking a rational gun control bill (one that does NOT "take away 2nd amendment rights"...just to get that out of the way) -- which they wouldn't, but if they were then yes I would applaud those who were protesting against that. It's ridiculous. It's outrageous. It's disgusting. The NRA is one of our society's evils.

Are there bills in front of the Housr? I know the Senate voted yesterday on their bills And they were all voted down including the 2 from the GOP--1 was to beef up background checks and I am not sure what the other was. From here it looks like the dems want their bills passed and will vote down anything else. I remember the GOP pulling some stupid crap last year and all the liberals were up in arms over it--how is this different?

Also... apparently CSPAN is (or was..I'm not near a TV to check) shut down. And the GOP was trying to forbid people from tweeting news reports. If this is true then omg.

Even if it doesn't work, and it probably won't, they are making it clear where they stand. I think that's important.

Well I guess both sides know how to play the game now. The GOP has been blocking stuff and shutting down the government to get their way. Now I guess it's the Democrats turn.

I just looked at the cspan site. It does say that they don't control the House cameras, which are shut off. Looks like there's no limit to how low some will stoop. I'm off to read more. I'm seeing tons of tweets that it was Ryan who switched off the cameras.

Ryan had them turned off, but last I heard, C-SPAN is broadcasting Periscope feeds from the Democrats in the sit-in.
Which, if you ask me, is totally awesome.

Would you be applauding if the GOP had done this? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm applauding because I - along with the vast majority of Americans - think it's disgusting that the GOP lawmakers, the bought-and-paid-for handmaidens of the NRA, refuse to listen to their constituents and DO ANYTHING. link

The house speaker had the cameras turned off. Call his office and tell them you want then turned back on. Direct number 202-224-3121 I tried this number and got the Congressional switchboard, which wants you to choose House or Senate. Then, after you choose, the system wants you to input your zip code, which will give you the number for your specific Rep. Googled. Here's his office number. Phone: (202) 225-3031 Of course, you'll get an automated voice mail thing. But you can leave a message. And GREAT NEWS! Speaker Ryan himself says on the greeting that he wants the House to work for the people who sent their Representatives to Washington! I left him a message requesting that he switch the cameras and microphones back on, since being able to see what's happening in the House chamber is what would work best for me, and I urge everyone else to contact him, too.

From C-span
"Shortly after dozens of House Democrats mounted a sit-in on the House floor to protest inaction on gun legislation, the C-SPAN cameras (and the microphones on the floor) went dark.
Conspiracy? Censorship? Republicans leadership trying to blot out the protest? Nope, simply the sound of a single gavel. C-SPAN broadcasts the proceedings of the House, but it doesn't control the cameras. All of that is run by the House, and by long-standing policy, the broadcast is only live while the House is in session. When Democrats began their protest, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, who was presiding over the chamber, asked for order. Democrats did not yield the floor, so Poe banged the gavel and declared the House in recess. And the C-SPAN cameras went dark."

Partisan theatre. If they were really serious, they would be in bi-partisan meetings trying to hash out the differences in details so they could come together for real legislation. Instead, they want to create election year theatre.

There were FOUR bills on the floor none of which passed. I just don't get it. It just shows me that NO ONE is interested in ANY type of compromise; they are just interested in creating a freaking circus. I heard bits and pieces of all the bills and all have very good points and very bad points. There will be no compromise while this clown act is going on in DC. ETA: It looks like BeckyTech and I were posting at the same time. :-)

The official bills for this week don't show any: docs.house.gov/floor/The snippet I saw on CNN says the sit in is to force a vote on barring those on the no-fly list from purchasing guns that was voted down in the Senate. In all honesty, I think that's nothing more than media ploy. The no-fly list includes 2,700 Americans. We're not going to solve our gun violence issue with the passing of this measure. ETA and for the record Omar Mateen was not on the no fly list when he purchased his weapons.

So who would like to explain why this proposal was voted down:
"proposal to update the background check system for gun purchases, which would have required states to add more information on mental health records to a national database. It also included a provision to alert law enforcement agencies when an individual who was on a government terror watch list in the last five years buys a gun."

I don't get it they didn't vote for the one that would keep those on the do not fly list from getting guns and then hold a sit in so it looks like they are trying to get a bill passed when they voted against them because it wasn't a bill by their party. Get a bill passed that keeps guns out of the hand s of people on the do not fly list who cares who wrote the bill if it was a good bill. If it had other crap in there write a different one but get it done. There is no excuse at this point. Republicans don't want the bad guys to have guns and are not against waiting periods and background checks they just want to be able to have guns and to uphold the second amendment once past these checks. This is nuts and why I hate politicians think of what is best for the country and stop acting like toddlers.
