I loved this, too. Simple but powerful at the same time.

I think he's just one of those occasionally awkward people doing an awkward thing. I can relate. I'd have a short career if I had to live a spotlight. I think he's one of those naturally upbeat people, even in solemn occasions a lighter moment can sneak up on them. Doesn't mean they dont understand the severity, or lack a functioning brain.

Never been a fan of his and never will be. He gave a good speech, and I'd like to think he got lost in the music and forgot what brought them all there. But damn, he looks like a doofus!

He gave a good speech at the Dallas memorial service but then acted inappropriately by smiling and dancing during the Battle Hymn of the Republic. linkMichelle and Barack were smiling right along with him, Michelle leaned in with him for a big ol' smile and Barack even swayed with him for a bit. So, they were acting inappropriately too, then, but they don't get mentioned.

I wondered the same thing. And before that, when the color guard came in, everyone saluted except him. He just stood there sort of rocking in his shoes.

I did think it was a bit odd after the wonderful speech he had just made. I assume he just got caught up in the patriotism of the song?!?! Not really any worse (IMO) than the joking reference Pres. Obama made about being glad he met Michelle first so he got to be the one who dated her. Thought that seemed very out of place too given the occasion.

That was odd but not as bad as I was expecting from the comments - it is an uplifting song but still it was a memorial so yes I think it was a bit inappropriate. Mrs Obama did not look happy to be holding his hand at all or with the situation.

Both Laura and Michelle (and everyone else in that row) are standing there pretty solemnly, and then George starts doing his thing. Both Laura and Michelle initially gave him WTF looks, before what I assume is their effort to salvage an extremely awkward moment by sort of swaying with him. I have no interest in making this a partisan battle with you. I was genuinely concerned because even though Bush has had his moments, his behavior given the gravity of the situation seemed way off even for him.

I don't think that what Bush did was out of place considering during one of the speeches the audience was laughing at something funny the speaker had said. I think it was when the Chief was talking about his awkward teenage years, maybe. I think people just like to criticize the former president.

I had taken a closer look, I watched it several times and did not see what you see. So I watched it a few more times and can see what you see in Michelle, she probably IS thinking WTF in the beginning, but form the very beginning I see Laura swaying with him and I never saw her give him a WTF look, ever. I do see Michelle and Barack smiling and singing with him and Barack swaying with him and Michelle lean in with him and give a big heartfelt smile. She seemed to soften her WTF look after that and enjoy the moment with him. When that peppy part of the music changed, he stood still. No one was as animated as he was, to be sure, but I just didn't see it the way you did, so we'll just agree to disagree.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that this is an assessment that some will come to, but it seems absolutely clear to me that President and Michelle Obama are merely reacting to what President Bush is doing. I'm not sure they had a choice given the situation. To me they look appropriately uncomfortable with what is happening.

Politics wise, I'm not a GWB fan, but I believe he is a thoughtful and caring man, judging from the things he has done after leaving the White House. I thought he gave a great speech yesterday. I think he had a momentary lapse of judgment and would have thought Laura would have done something to stop him from swaying. I think the Obamas were trying their best to keep a straight face, but failed on that.

I watched the entire thing, live. I do not think he was drunk at all. I thought he gave a great speech (as did the Police Chief). I think the swaying was GWB getting caught up in the music and moment. Nothing more.

I loved it Michelle was the first one to applaud the first musical number which was outstanding and then they all stoodI thought she was gonna start clapping and swinging to it as well at the end. It was very moving and well done. I said to my DH at GWB at least seemed to know the words to Battle Hymn! :DIt's hard one. We kinda joked about it. I thought it was very moving when they all locked arms. It was all very hard to watch but it was all very good-Very moving.

I think he forgot where he was. and the smiling, and the hands going back and forth like he is going to "boogie down", then the finger pointing at someone in the audience.
That's what Laura is for, to give her husband the sharp elbow and a terse "Knock that shit off, George".

I'm not sure they had a choice given the situation. To me they look appropriately uncomfortable with what is happening. Why? How? What in the world would make you think they have no choice. Barack Obama is the President of the freaking United States. He absolutely can do what he wants and not be influenced by someone who is acting inappropriately if he felt that way. It's not partisan - the Obamas and especially President Obama were acting in almost exactly the same way. Or wait. Maybe it is partisan but just not in the way that some think. On the other hand, it was during an upbeat part of the song. It's certainly not as though he was trying to get his boogie on. That said, I was watching Mrs. Bush's hands every carefully to see if she gave him the "WTF" hand squeeze that I would likely give my husband in that situation. On the other hand, it was during an upbeat part of the song. It's certainly not as though he was about to break into some sort of booty shake.

I keep typing a reply but the bottom line comes down to whether or not the Obama's felt that what he was doing was inappropriate. Since we will never know the answer to that, I don't suppose there is anything to really debate.

I saw him speak in person at a conference recently - maybe 25 yards away? He seemed fine, although it was like watching a caricature of him. But I think that's just how he is.

I think he just got caught up in the music and song. Since he didn't twerk or do the whip ney nae, I think it's all good. Laura did give him the stink eye though, and Michelle was keeping straight arms trying to keep his sway under control.

It was, as you would expect, a somber affair for everyone—everyone except George W. Bush, who was ready to fucking party.
Lol!

I've been to lots of funerals. I've been to lots of police line-of-duty funerals. I've never been to any funeral, police or otherwise, that didn't have some light moments, some laughter, even some jokes at the expense of the deceased. Other than the fact that he's an ex-president, always on camera, and maybe would want to act a little more somber for that reason ... I don't see the big deal. And it seems in line with his past behavior at public events. But, that said: He gave a good speech at the Dallas memorial service but then acted inappropriately by smiling and dancing during the Battle Hymn of the Republic. linkMichelle and Barack were smiling right along with him, Michelle leaned in with him for a big ol' smile and Barack even swayed with him for a bit. So, they were acting inappropriately too, then, but they don't get mentioned. No, they didn't, and no, they weren't.
