From the standpoint of my wallet this is a great idea, BUT... With so many papercrafting stores having a hard time keeping their doors open this just hurts them more. We need to support them in order to keep them open! While I cannot speak for everyone, I spend my fair share with papercrafting stores throughout the year - and usually don't use a coupon or discount. If they cannot handle me not spending money there for one month, then they have bigger issues than me having a no spend January. And as a second thought - my primary concern is my family's financial fitness. NOT a store. If I am going to spend money then great - I will spend money with smaller scrapbook stores. But I feel no obligation to fit my budget around a scrapbook store. None whatsoever.

We need to support them in order to keep them open! I think some of us have single handedly paid a few salaries with our spending! I've used that "support the industry" as an excuse to spend but that's what it is, an excuse. In less than two years I've amassed a stash unlike anything I ever had for over a decade of scrapbooking and somehow I still have dozens of albums from back then. I love pretty papers but at the rate lines are released, it's hard to buy and use it all within the time frame between releases. Agree, completely. I am not a nickel and dime shopper. I drops serious money when I shop. I refuse to be guilted into spending more.

Then when she was old enough to entertain herself in the evenings so I could scrapbook I got back into it and seems like the last 2 years I have been making up for lost time, tracking down scrapbook lines I had missed and more than tripling my scrapbook stash. I really need to slow down if not stop this train I am on of ordering scrapbook stuff online.

We've all been supporting small and big stores for years. Hence a good reason to have a no spend January. It's only 31 days, although for me, I may try to go longer if my willpower is still strong. No guilt here.
What do you all think of maybe adding another dimension to our challenge? Let's post pics of all our pages we produce in January. I think it would be fun to see what we're all doing with our 'old' product!

Well, just today I removed myself from THREE scrapbooking related email lists. I'm really going to go for it this year!
Exceptions:
1. Adhesive 2. Scrapbook Expo in August 3. Crops

While I appreciate helping keep small local businesses open, my priority is still my financial health. We buy a lot local (including locally produced and/or crafted) but I would not sacrifice our well-being for the sake of it. I've not spent anything since the end of November (and that was an exceptional one-off that month anyway, I think). I'm pretty certain I won't be spending anything on scrapbook materials in January (and probably February) except on some double-sided adhesive tape (actually, I'll be using some customer loyalty points for those + shipping so technically won't be paying for it). I look forward to seeing how this little support group will help everyone out!

So who is going to last-minute binge shop in December before the January freeze? LOL! It's like pigging out on favorite snacks the day before you start a diet! Me! Waiting for KP's shop update to use the subbers discount for December. Aside from my KP kit, I'm limiting my freeze to photo supplies. I have to buy paper this week, but figure I'll be needing ink in January for sure. Hoping there are some Boxing Day sales on ink to make it a real freeze for me.

I think I'm going to do well with this especially since mom is tempting us with the felicity Jane sale and I've been dying for more letter stickers and I totally resisted!

I'm planning to pick up a few stamps I missed previously from KP during the shop update and use my Dec discount too! The last hurrah before January. I'm planning to drop my AE sub. I still have commitment left on KP. My only other purchases would potentially be photos (either with a print service or supplies to print at home) and any crops (but I don't count those as SB purchases since the cost covers my food and goes to charity).

Even though I said I wouldn't, I did make one last purchase. Once I got a huge stack of vacation pictures in the mail I realized that I did not buy enough of the themed supplies I will need for the album. I found a great deal and only spent about $20. I definitely feel like I'm ready for No Spend January now.

Just received 3 of the $5 kits from SC and a couple of rolls of ATG adhesive with an Amazon Christmas order so I am set for a good while. Will have a no spend January and hopefully February too. I'll be watching this thread.

I went to a LF Valentine release class today (Yes a Valentine card class on Dec. 17th!). I bought the LF Love Letters stamps and dies [ LF Valentine 2017 release ], the LF Winter Sparrows stamp and dies, silver embossing powder and silver glittery Nuvo drops. I usually shop around (online or coupon) for the best price, but I really like this store and I don't get there very often because it's a out of my normal travel zone. (for you NorCal gals it was at "the Island") The friend I went with laughed when I said I was doing a no spend January. I have no control.

I'll join in. I still have my AE sub (that I'm thinking of dropping)and will need to print picture, but that is it. I really need to to focus on being more productive with the supplies I already have.

I guess if you are not a regular poster here your thoughts/opinions don't count. Nobody trying to guilt you into anything. Just put the suggestion out there. The thread was not started because of "family finances"...just a random suggestion to freeze spending. I wouldn't expect anyone to spend money on a hobby or craft if they were struggling with family finances. And I didn't suggest you need to go shopping and break the bank on craft stuff. I read a lot of boards and I see a lot of wining about stores closing or stores never having anything new. The industry has really softened and many stores, for whatever reason, are closing or on the brink of closing...even online stores. You have no idea what, even a small purchase, can do to help the stores that are left survive. If you want to spend your freezing fine...no shirt off my back, but there was no reason for y'all to be rude.

Realistically, I can't pass up a good deal. But I don't need anything. My goal for myself will be a modification of no-spend: I need to either sell something in my stash to pay for it or I have to use up/giveaway the equivalent. I think I can, I think I can... I can already see that January may be difficult. I ordered a couple of dies this month from my SU supplier, but I'm not sure if she ordered them for me or if she passed my "wishlist" to a family member to gift to me. I guess I'll find out at Christmas. If I do end up buying them, that's a lotta scrap crap I have to sell to pay for it, lol.

As a matter of fact I do have an online store, but my store is thriving and I'm not worried for myself (plus it is not my only income). But I do have quite a few friends in the industry who are struggling to keep their shops open, so just trying to remind people that even a little sale is a big thing to some shop owners. Peace!

Not trying to be "rude" but the truth has been revealed. I have not come here looking for business. Have never even mentioned my store or it's name and never would. My store is doing just fine without having to look for "free" advertising. I pay for my advertising thank you very much and work hard at my business. And you may not be trying to be rude, but that statement was rude as my original comment had nothing to do with me or trying to get more business which you have just implied. So much for trying to become a part of the community here as I guess only the people that have been around awhile are the only ones here that are allowed to have an opinion on anything.

The only rudeness I see is cropgal posting on a thread specifically stating this was for a NO SPEND January. I was not looking for a debate or reasons not to do it. I was encouraging others to pay along with they wish. Not interested in play along -for whatever reason? Awesome. Move along. There are tons of other threads you can participate in. Just not this one.

I took the original post as a "Hey, I have a crap ton of supplies and I plan to create with items I've already purchased. Anyone want to join in?" not a "Hey, let's not spend any money in January and try to put the LSS's and mom & pop retailers out of business".
