Just wondering if anyone else has noticed the endless pics these designers posts of their families on instagram? Every pic looks staged with designer props and matching clothes and wide smiles Are they meant to promote their design aesthetic or do they really look like this all the time? Seems every time I look there is another one....with little boys dressed like men with suits and ties or kids in matching pj 's What point am I missing......

I was noticing that the other day on the A Beautiful Mess blog. Wonderful pictures and fun to look at but I can't imagine the time and effort behind each one. Everything before the shot is taken. I think the photos are part of their business so need to look amazing. The photos encourage us to sign up for classes, etc. Once they get popular enough I'm guessing they can monetize thru ads?

Yes ,I agree. I just wondered because their comments read as if it is spontaneous but that is clearly not the case because it all looks so stylized

It is hard to believe that everyone always looks so perfect and well lit and glowy white and clean, isn't it? I don't follow them because it seems like they are trying so dang hard and it annoys me. Maybe they are always happy and shiny and clean and no one ever fights and the kids are perfect angels, but if that is the case that just makes me feel worse. I am sure they are happy people and they have style and dress well and the ladies are pretty and the kids are cute, but it feels so forced when I see their pictures, I like a little spontaneity and a pinch of realism.

Faux fun, faux fun, we're off to have faux fun..... Should have added- the stuff seen here is the showreel, not the whole (life) movie. When I was still scrapping I would scrap the candid shots before any of the staged stuff. I particularly eschew those "teethy" fake smiles beautiful little kids have been taught to make.

It's a job. I don't know these women but they make a living off there blogs, etc. It is sad that the kids are involved, as I'm sure it isn't fun for them.

Was wondering the same thing.
I am obviously out of touch.

I don't know who they are, can you post the links to their instagram pages?

They are Maggie Holmes, Amy Tang (Tangerine) and Lizzie Katchnser ( I am sure that is not spelled right). They are "famous" for designing their own scrapbook lines for American Crafts.

Maggie Holmes, Amy Tan, Lizzy Kartchner
I don't think it's all staged - some are with the painted walls and such. But they are only going to share the best shot of the bunch which are edited and filters are added to make them look as beautiful as possible. Their careers are based on their aesthetic so they want to always put their best images forward.

I searched since the OP didn't provide any links. There's too many Amy Tangs, no Lizzie Katchnser, but I found Maggie Holmes: www.instagram.com/maggiehdesign/?hl=enIt looks like she does a lot of flat lays (pictures on white flat backgrounds) and pictures of her family in bright light again on white backgrounds. She may even use a filter because all her pictures are just too bright and a tad blurry.

I remember some of the names from scrapbooking. I have not kept up with that world at all. I have my stockpile of supplies. The only thing I will need to buy going forward is adhesive. Not that I have used paper to scrap in ages.

I think it is a mom blog thing. This is how they make their living. There are a number of mom blogs that I have been directed to over the years where the families are constantly doing similar things, and the more successful ones will specifically mention the outfits because they get the products to promote (Enjoying The Small Things is one of those).
I still scrapbook, and my kids are pretty tolerant, so I do get a couple of dressed-up group shots every year, and I like dressing my kids and myself up more generally. I don't have positive feelings about people who frequently use their kids to make a living, however.

I knew immediately which Maggie you were taking about even though I haven't looked at her stuff in years.
I get that looking beautiful and aspirational is part of their job, and I respect that. That line from Steel Magnolias always comes to mind for me, though: "they do look like they've all been carved out of cream cheese."

Good heavens, I am going t be really catty right now, but looking at Maggie Holmes instagram why dones she she stand so pigeon toed in every picture? Looks so awkward and it clearly isn't her natural stance since it is only in the super posed family shots. Dear Lizzy dies that as well, but I don't knowif hers is natural or not because I seem to remember her doing it in every photo.
I understand they are selling a product and a lifestyle, but it bothers me that their kids are part of it. Kind of like the Baby Boy Bakery lady who seems to be monetizing her son's death. If you are selling yourself, fine, you are an adult, but leave your kids out of it.

I remember Maggie Holmes but I think she used to have blonde hair? Anyway, it looks like she and her family take a photo every Sunday in their church clothes. That is why so many of them dressed up.

www.instagram.com/dearlizzy/?hl=en Ok they are both using some bright filter. Yes her pictures are magazine perfect, but just imagine how many takes each one picture took. lol White backgrounds are the theme, she must not even paint any walls in her house so it can photograph well. What is she 26 with 4 kids? Not jealous of her life at all. But they make good props for the photos.

Stylists and colorists and hair extensions and wardrobe and make-up artists and home fitness instructors and personal shoppers and nannies and house cleaners and florists and home designers and photo editors - hell w/all those as possible write-offs of our "lifestyle" businesses, we'd look like a million too.

I look at Amy's instagram but not the rest. I like Amy's creative style. I ditched Becky Higgin's social media about a year ago. I'm sick of scrapbookers telling me how to live a good life and peddling their products.
Maggie Holme's instagram is particularly amusing. Her family is beautiful. They look like great people but seriously, every few days there are pictures of them looking perfect in matching or coordinating outfits, perfect hair and smiles. I couldn't even take pictures of my teens on Christmas "no pictures mom, my hair's a mess". That's real life LOL.

No I think they just have good metabolisms. I save florists arrangements photos to my phone then go to Safeway and buy the exact same flowers every week at a fraction of the cost. Some people are just more into creating photo ready ambiance at home and have a knack for putting together stylish outfits.

One memorable year Amy Tan came allllll the way over here to teach a class to a bunch of experienced scrapppers (about 80% return attendees, beginners or scrapppers who were experienced but not necessarily class goers made up the rest) and she finished about 45 mins early so she would have time to have photos taken with the attendees I am well known as the worlds slowest scrapper and this is the first and only project I have finished, including embellishments, well within class time. She was very nice, I have to say, but very "on" IYKWIM.

I just looked at Lizzy's instagram. It says at the top "Time stands still best in moments that look suspiciously like ordinary life ". That's not an ordinary life, it's a constant photoshoot. The picture in her kitchen? There isn't one thing on the countertop and they have a family of 6. Everything in the house is white, the perfect backdrop. Everything is meticulous. It a perfectly manufactured life and yet tens of thousands follow her insta.

I like Amy's instagram better, I guess she's not part of the Mormom mommy blogger club, and only has one child, she shows lots of different things on her feed.
