I'm European and I've always loved travelling to the US. Lately I been making at least one trip a year there. Travelling to the US has never been trendy in my country. I've been asked many times why do I want to travel to the US, they have so many problems there, they are so conservative there and so on. I answered that when you look past the politics, the country is wonderful. People are friendly, food is great, shopping is amazing and there's so much to see.
But now. We are entered to this grazy world of Trump. And for the first time I don't want to look past the politics. I was planning a trip to Florida for December and found myself not wanting to go. Donald Trump is disgusting man who doesn't belong to the White House. I fear that he is going to destroy the US and maybe the rest of world too. I live 180 miles from St. Petersburg and honestly, Trumps ties to Russia scare me.
I am not ok with him or his politics and if I travel to US, I feel like would be showing to others that I am. And then there's safety. Of course there are terrorist attacks in Europe too, but I live in pretty safe country. Who knows what happens before December in US.
I'm struggling. Do I really want to stop travelling to the US for the next four years? I wanted to see California! And Vegas! And Wyoming!
How to you feel if you live outside the US and like travelling there?

I am right there with you. My DH and I (he has worked in the US and seen a bit of it, I have not) are planning travel for later in the year and there was so much in the US we wanted to do. We are seriously second-guessing ourselves now though. Oh well, maybe as a person from a third world country I wouldn't get a visa anyway!
My DH should be fine, he holds a British passport (in 20 years I never tried to piggyback on this despite being "allowed" to apply using our relationship) and DT / Theresa May are literally holding hands now hahaha.

I'm feeling the same way. My parents winter in California and we generally visit them at least once over the winter. I told my mom that I have zero desire to set foot in the US right now. Like, none. What's even more interesting is that her American friends are now exploring the idea of coming to Canada for the summer, like snowbirds in reverse. They just want to get a break from all the Trump insanity. I know other people who are flat out refusing to go to the US while Trump is president, strictly on principle. The man is so indescribably vile that even vacationing in his country feels like some kind of endorsement or approval and is out of the question.

We were planning a trip to San Francisco but have no desire to go now. I think we'll be doing a grand tour of Ireland instead.

I'm going to NYC this summer, and as long as I'm not denied entry (who knows which countries end up on "the list" next) I'm going as planned. The US is so much more than Trump and his cronies. There are a lot of countries which I have no desire to visit.Ever. But the US is so far not on that list.

DD and her GF had intended to visit Florida this year. They were going to visit Disneyworld and then go down to the Gulf Coast. They have decided to postpone their trip. They believe that as a gay couple they may be a target for someone's hatred, someone who now feels empowered to attack them. They don't want to deal with that on holiday. Neither one is particularly confident, and even a verbal tirade would be very upsetting for them.

If I were you there is absolutely no way I'd be coming to America for the next 4 years. I wouldn't support Trump with my tourism dollars. And apparently, this country is no longer friendly to foreign people. With this latest executive order business I would not feel welcome to visit here from another country, even if I were "Christian" and not from one of the countries on that ridiculous list. Nope. I'd pick a different country to spend my travel money on.
And things are getting bat shit crazy here, and we're only on week 1. I am so ashamed of my countries leaders right now. They are making an ass out of us on the world stage.

I do recognize that the US is more than Trump. I've met so many wonderful people there and I love the country. But like pierkiss said, travelling there now would mean supporting Trump with my money. And after reading the news about the muslim ban, I don't want to that. And who knows, maybe I will denied entry as well at some point. What's happening in the US is truly heartbreaking. |

The US is such a beautiful place and there are many more places in it that I want to see. And, I do want to support the majority of you who are nothing like Trump. But if I was planning travel, it would be far too unpredictable. And I wouldn't want to look as though I was supporting Trumps America in any way.
I'll wait 4 years and come back later.

As a Christian Australian, I assume I'll still be allowed in, but if he follows through with his threat to remove the visa waiver program and subject us to in-person interviews I don't think I will. Besides if I sat through the interview I'd probably be found to be an undesirable visitor because I have friends who are Muslim and I despise Donald Trump with every fibre of my being. And I'd probably say that to the interviewer.
I love the US. Especially Disneyland. The idea of Disneyland being in a country with DT at the head makes me so incredibly sad. There are so many things to be horrified by, but that for some reason hits really hard. It's like ripping away the innocence and magic. I was watching flag break at Disneyland online today and I could have cried. All those veterans standing around the flagpole being applauded for their service - is this really what they were fighting for? I can't believe that it was.

If I had already planned a trip to the US I would still go for sure. But if I had a few different countries to choose from, I would cross the US off my list, at least for the next 4 years. And if/when I do get to go to the US (fingers crossed) there are a number of states that I would be unlikely to visit due to some ridiculous and scary laws (bathroom and open carry to name a couple).

This is very much how I feel too. There are a lot of countries I can visit with a lot less fuss, where I don't need to worry about applying in advance for a visa. It would make the US much less attractive as a vacation destination for me. |

The more I think about this...
I think that states like mine will have to start doing something against the administration's attitudes. We absolutely depend on tourism and if that takes the hit that I think it will, our economy will be impacted negatively in such a way that we won't be able to ignore world opinion. There will be pushback. And my guess is even our goofy Republican governor will have something to say.
But again I say this, we here in Florida are pretty nice over all. We like our traveling friends...and we welcome you with open hearts and arms.

I have been to Florida twice - once to visit Disneyworld with our kids and just a year ago for a cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale - and I found the people and the place lovely. It's just getting there that puts me off. |

This is something we sat down as a family to discuss last night. We've agreed that we will have no travel to or through the US for the foreseeable future. This means a complete reworking of our vacation schedule this year.

We (family of 8, including my parents) had planned to travel the east coast next year. Last year we went to NYC.
I'm not sure whether we're still going. I'm not getting a friendly, welcoming vibe at the moment. Maybe we'll go to SE Asia instead and reconsider the USA in a few years.

In winter, there are tons of snowbirds from Canada in Florida. I have friends who are concerned that they will be subject to intense screening or even be asked to leave their winter homes! My cousins have 2 homes in Florida and are both worried about it. These are Canadian people!
To answer the OP, my DH and I do a lot of cross border shopping but we decided we will put all of our money into Canada for the next while. We may need the boost to our economy seeing as Trudeau is stepping up for the refugees that Trump has displaced.

I'll be passing through LAX this Friday on my way back to New Zealand. Have to clear immigration even though I'm technically in transit. As a dual British/New Zealand citizen I assume I'll be allowed on the plane for now, but it does give pause for thought.

I'm not denying that there are many spectacular natural wonders in America and some of them also fall on my favourite places. But Disneyland has always been a refuge of childhood magic for my children and I and whilst I don't think Trump can spoil the beauty of natural attractions, Disneyland all of a sudden feels colder and uglier. I'm not saying that it's a rational thought process - just an emotional one. |

I know we have no intentions of going to the US as long as Trump is president, and several people I work with feel the same way. It just doesn't feel like it's as safe anymore. I live only a few hours from the border, and sometimes wish it was a little further. My boss is going to Mexico instead of Vegas in February partly because he doesn't want to feel like he's supporting Trump either.

My kids usually play in one or two hockey tournaments around the Rochester/Syracuse area. That will not be happening this year or for the foreseeable. DH and I were planning to go to Vegas but are now thinking of going to the Bahamas instead. I know the U.S is more than Trump but I don't plan on spending a cent of my tourist dollars there while he is President.
We were also thinking about doing a trip of several MLB parks this summer. The planning was only in the infancy stage so it has been put on the back burner for now.

TallennaOh, there will be no doubt that it will hurt us (Florida)-we lost so much after 9/11 when the planes were not allowed to fly and afterwards when people were hesitant to travel. The powers that be implored us to get out and spend money. The boys and I went over to Disney on 9/13 and the park was empty. I mean, walk up to the front of the line and get on what ever ride you wanted empty. No lines, because there were no people. I remember sitting in one of the little play areas at Animal Kingdom with another mother and we both stopped, looked up and held our breath as a flight of military jets flew over head. But as badly as this could hurt us, it will absolutely prompt action. We can't take the hit for long, and our tourism lobby will not stand by and let it happen-irrespective of their political leanings. Their jobs will literally depend on results. I don't like our governor much at all, but have been slightly heartened by his (at least from the outside) distance from the administration. I hope that he sees what this ban and the unintended economic consequence thereof will do to my state, my county, and my city. And then you can come back...and enjoy the wonderful stuff we have to offer.  |

I completely understand the sentiments expressed here. We are multi-generation Texans and my kids just want out of Texas because they feel they are not accepted here.
It might actually be a good thing if foreign tourists start boycotting the U.S. in numbers big enough to affect tourism dollars. Then maybe congress and state leaders would get their heads out of their rumps and stand up to Trump.
