Like many Americans, I'm feeling charmed by your Prime Minister but I was interested in your country previously. I've considered a road trip across Canada -- but haven't actually plotted it out. So I was reading an article from some travel site -- and one of the things to "know" is that Canadians drink milk from "plastic bags" with an accompanying photo of a grocery shelf with (apparently) bags of milk. Now I've heard of boxed wine (and have participated with boxed wine) so I'm not offended ... I'm just wondering ... HOW? I'm guessing that you have some sort of holder and dispenser in your refrigerator into which is inserted the fresh bag of milk when necessary. Right? (Interior monologue - I should google this ... or maybe not .. "milk bag" !!) So - how do your milk purchases work up there in the Great White North?

No milk bags here in Alberta ... that was a thing years ago but I don't think we have seen that for more than 20 years Boxed wine is a joke ... we rarely buy it ... that is a myth ... we're all about the screw top bottles Canadian wine, especially from British Columbia rocks You definitely need to come to Calgary during July to take in the Stampede ... it's so fun! We are only an hour away from the mountains as well

I was shocked when I encountered the first "milk in a bag" - but now I find it useful for a variety of reasons--unopened bags don't have to be refrigerated.
I have yet to conquer the exact amount to snip off that corner. I often make it much, much too large an opening.

i use bagged milk and boxed wine!
once my DD was about 8 and wanted to go to the corner store by herself because we needed milk. i gave her $5.00 and told her to go in and get 3 bags of milk. i waited outside a bit up the street. she seemed to be taking forever!!! i finally went in to check on her and she is carrying 3 of three litre bags of milk (they come in 3 bag packages), very precariously.... so that would be NINE of the bags you see above.
i should have clarified A bag of milk, not that she should get 3 of those bags.... poor thing! but she was so cute, game to try to juggle all this milk. which, btw, $5.00 would NOT have covered!

No bags of milk in British Columbia either. Many, many years ago they had them but they have been gone from the shelves a long time.
When they were available, they did have to be refrigerated.

Thank you! I'd imagined more of a device like boxed wine and couldn't figure out how to attach the bag to the dispenser --- but a pitcher .. well, that seems easy! The non-refrigeration part is interesting as well!
Thanks for the info!

Good lord. I live in Alberta, I've never seen milk in a bag in my life, and boxed wine? Just, no.

A few years back I saw them on the shelves of a UK supermarket but they don't appear to have taken off as I haven't seen any since.

We did a bit of a road trip in Canada, driving back from a visit to DD in Oregon. We went to Victoria then over to Vancouver, then drove the Trans-Canada Highway through BC into Alberta to Banff and Lake Louise before cutting down to the US border. Saw some beautiful country and met some wonderful people. Didn't see any bagged milk tho, but did find a few Tim Hortons. Send some of those to Florida please!

I used to use bagged milk when the kids were little, but haven't seen it in years (I'm in Alberta). I also grew up with bagged milk

and boxed wine? Just, no. I think that's true wherever you live!!! Over here we have just come out of a couple of years where a "wine lake" surplus of high quality estate wines unable to be exported was marketed in boxes (1L, 3L and a 5L cardboard thing with a tap). They were colloquially known as Chateau Collapso!

Another Alberta girl here, so no bagged milk stories but... Tim Hortons, now that I'm well experienced in. Go there at least once a week for Lunch

No milk bags here in Bristish Colombia either. And boxed wine, yuck. Come to the Okanagan and enjoy a winery tour and some amazing wine and milk in cartons like you're use to!

In Ontario, milk comes in bags and cartons. And both need refrigeration. The only difference is quantity. Bagged milk (3 small bags sold together) at about 3L versus cartons that are no bigger than 2L. Depending on how fast you go through it, bags are cheaper. As for boxes of wine ... Just say no.

Kwik Trip stores in the US carry bagged milk. Or maybe it was carried-- I haven't been in one in years.

They're in Quebec too. If you don't have milk in bags, how can you make plastic blankets?

wow - hate for the boxed wine! lol! i love a bottle of wine and usually lean towards sauvignon blanc. my faves are kim crawford, marlborough and cupcake vineyards. BUT i have been to *lots* of lakeside cottage parties on summer nights and after the first glass, i really enjoyed that boxed wine.

Come to Ontario!
We have beautiful wine regions - Niagara, Pelee Island and Prince Edward County. Tourist areas such as Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake, Stratford, Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston & so many more.
Yes we have milk in bags and I don't get the big deal out of that fact. We also have great chocolate such as the Cadbury, former Rowntree and Nestle products.
The exchange rate is great and you get more for your money.

When I was in elementary school here in Houston, TX, we went through a milk pouch phase. Instead of the half pint cartons, we would get a pouch of milk and a small straw, which we would pierce through the bag like a Capri Sun. It was a short lived change, maybe two or three years.

I live in Ontario, and yes we have milk in bags. They do need to be refrigerated. I lived in Victoria and we had boxed milk that did not need to be in the fridge until opened. Yuck.

No bagged milk in Nova Scotia either. We use to have bagged milk and now we have heavy 4L cartons of milk. Our milk is crazy expensive. For 4L we pay over $6 and 4L of chocolate milk is almost $8.
