I think that it happened on the evening before the Patriots were going to the White House to be congratulated for winning the Super Bowl is telling. All that he threw away must have finally hit home.

I was a little shocked, too. I thought he picked the easy way out - is that bad to say? I apologize if that hits someone the wrong way.

This was my reply to a post on Facebook. You'll be able to tell my full feelings on the matter from it... Facebook post: I live in MA and I'm glad that my taxes can now go to something more worthwhile...like maybe fixing potholes...because this POS chose to take the coward's way out of his well deserved prison sentence. But my heart goes out to his daughter and the family of Odin Lloyd (and his other victims). Just to be clear, I do NOT think that all suicides are cowardly...far from it. I lost a young nephew to it. But in cases like Hernandez, he couldn't man up and serve his time, so he phoned it in at the end of a sheet. That's a coward.

My condolences to his family & that of his victim.
[Tangent/soapbox: Sadly, his short 27 year life story epitomizes the pitfalls of athletic privilege. Starting in late middle to early high school, talented athletes are often excused from the rules at school (eg turning in homework, skipping class). By their junior year, they've gotten the attention of local sponsors due to the increased attendance/media at sporting events & the favoritism expands into their communities (eg. free food; not receiving a speeding ticket in exchange for giving an autograph). College recruiting visits garner regional to national attention & offer greater perks (eg best housing, chefs, tutors, national media coverage).
Adults in these teens' lives have placed them on a pedestal, where they are above the rules. Experiences in college & professional sports continue to confirm this perspective. Every transgression (eg speeding, underage drinking, illegal drug possession, assault) is discretely swept under the rug "not to distract from the team this season." When players, such as Aaron Hernandez & Rae Carruth, take a life & are held accountable for their actions, they are abandoned by all their fans/sponsors/coaches/teammates/enablers & without the life experience/skills to cope with accepting responsibility/consequences. Meanwhile, another hundred young athletes are being groomed for stardom...]

I'd never heard of him and had to google. What was the motive for the murder he committed? Because Hernandez was unhinged and it was a matter of time. If I remember correctly it was something small and Hernandez didn't trust Lloyd anymore. Something totally stupid. And despite his acquittal, I believe he killed those other two guys as well.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Hernandez's suicide protects his estate against civil litigation. So that may be why he did it though to hear his lawyer talk he had no money left. Not like he saw a dime of the $40M contract he had signed just before he killed Lloyd.

Maybe it finally hit home to him what life in prison without parole really means.SaveSave But the lawyer that got him acquitted of the double murder (who was Casey Anthony's lawyer) was saying that he'd appeal the murder conviction and he would eventually be a free man. Baez had no intention of doing it for free and Hernandez needed friends to come forward and finance the appeal since he had little, if any, money left. Maybe he found out there was no one lining up to help him. SaveSave
