I need the help of the Peas! Anyone or anyone's DH have kidney stones and used a natural remedy to help with the pain and / or helping the stone pass faster? I have read to use lemon juice or Apple Cider Vinegar.... Wondering what the peas think about these? He is in Severe pain, We have been to the ER 2x's all of the pain meds are making him sick, They said he needed to drink lots of water, but how do you do that when you are not keeping anything down! I will take any and all suggestions! TIA!!

Drink a lot of beer and jump up and down. This is a remedy recommended to my father by our German friends. My dad did go to the beer tent that night with Ottmar, drank a lot of beer, and did this drinking song that involved jumping from the ground to the bench to the table and back again. And my father passed his kidney stone in the morning. This is anecdotal evidence and should not be construed as sound (or sober) medical advice. Kidney stones suck and I do hope it's over for him soon.
ETA: a few other times they've been ginormous and my father has had to have lithotripsy. What do his doctors say about the size of the stone?

lol Compwalla! he would LOVE to drink lots and lots of beer, But as sick as he is, I dont think it would be too much fun coming back up. The Dr said the stone is small. they estimated 2mm and said that it just needs to pass into the bladder and then he should pass it with no issues. It would be awesome if this would happen sooner than later. it has been nearly 24 hrs since his pain started, they thought he would have passed it by now. I read that for some people it takes days! I am hoping that this stone is not our weekend plans. ugh.

Wow - not good. My DH had one too big to pass and had to have it surgically removed last year.
His urologist suggested taking Dandelion Root along with lots of water. His last stone passed quickly.

OMG! I feel for ya! I had a kidney stone about that size, maybe a bit bigger for like 2 mo's!! yea, it was fun. I drank lots of lemonade, and had a heating pad on ALOT. On my low back, and also front where the kidneys are. They did lithotripsy 1st, and said..oh yea, they got it. Nope. It only flattened it, and moved it down, where it got stuck...so waited a few more wks to see if it would pass on it's own..nope. So finally did a scope and stents..oooh joy. I feel for ya. I ended up in the ER once and on demoral IV which was the only thing that helped.

If they gave him pain meds, hopefully they also gave him anti-nausea meds. If not, he needs it!

Get him a big milkshake and then try taking meds again. yes he is eating.... he said he feels bloated, so he is eating light. we might try the milk shake thing. We were trying to avoid milk products as those are really hard on a person when they come back up! But at this point, it might be worth a shot! And yes, he has anti nausea meds, but it seems that when he takes anything, it comes back up. so I am not sure how much he is actually getting into his system to help him.

there are anti-nausea suppositories - not fun but maybe worth it.
Drink, drink, drink...water and/or cranberry juice - both to stay hydrated and to help flush the stone out. heat pads/rice packs can help a little but the pain meds are key

There has to be something they can give him for the pain that won't make him sick. As far as I know, there is no natural pain reliever for KS. I have had 2 and DH has had 3. We both needed heavy duty drugs. DH drank copious amounts of water and passed all 3 within 24 hours. One time when we were waiting to get into the ER he passed it. Hope your DH gets relief soon. It's not fun.

Liquids, liquids, liquids. If he needs to go back to the hospital and is dehydrated it's very tough to do an IV. Popsicles or Italian Ice if he wants to suck on something. Heating pads and ice. Sometimes getting your knees up close to your chest helps. Pacing might as well.

Dh had kidney stones and the pain was horrific. He spent half a day in the ER and had all sorts of test done before the stone was diagnosed. I don't remember how long it took to pass. My dad had kidney stones a couple of times and had to have the procedure that breaks them up internally. His stones were so hard he broke the machine!!
A female friend had a kidney stone that took her over ten days to pass recently. OMG she was in agony. Drank tons of water and cranberry juice, but it took lots of time.
I hope yours passes soon!

On the occasion I have passed stones, I drink lots of water and cranberry juice.
Heat really helps too, heating pad or hot bath.
Not a fun experience at all!

My DH has several a year. He said and I quote oh tell him I'm sorry and to take pain pills and piss as often as you can stand it. He also said this while grimacing and holding himself.

I get kidney stones; have for the last 17 years... Fluids - no caffeine (tea, iced tea, coffee, cola, etc)... Depending on what type of stone he has, lemon/citrus can actually aggravate it... If he catches the stone, they'll want to analyze it to find out what kind it is, so definitely keep it if you see it...lol If he's not keeping anything down, then he's getting dehydrated and that makes the pain so much worse... I'd be going back to the ER/UC or doctor for iv fluids... They can also manage the pain there too... Sometimes getting the pain knocked down enough to rest, is all it takes for the prescription pain meds to be able to take over pain control... I get fluids, iv gravol, and iv morphine, get a few hours of relief and then go home with prescription oxy and that will keep the pain away if I take it on time... Pain meds also can cause constipation, which adds discomfort to that area of the body, so staying hydrated is super important... Hope it passes soon for him...

I had to have anti nausea suppositories. That was the only way I could keep my medicine down when the stone was moving.

Thanks everyone! we thought we were passed the puking, because it had been a few hrs, but alas, it is back. ugh. We are trying to manage the pain now with a heating pad ( he has used this on and off all day long) and some ibuprofen. So far the ibuprofen is working, hoping it will not make him sick like the other stuff was. The ibuprofen does not take the pain totally away, but does make it manageable. Trying to get him to drink more, but it is hard to do when you throw up, you dont really want any more liquid in your body. Hoping we make it through the night with out another trip to the ER.
On a side note, He was at the ER 2xs in the last 24hrs ( once from 9pm till 1am last night and then again just before 5am till 11am today) he was really sick this morning, even with them giving him the anti nausea stuff in his IV. So I dont think it matters how he get the meds, the anti nausea stuff does not seem to be strong enough for what the pain meds are doing. and to top all of that off, he was really uncomfortable in the hospital bed (Which why aren't they more comfy, when you are sick, you want to be comfy!) So this is why we decided to come home, see if we could manage it any better from here and he could lay in our bed and sit up in the recliner. I am really hoping it passes soon!

I can't help you on the stones, but if necessary, you could ask about Ondansetron dissolvable tablets for the nausea. Maybe those won't come back up since they basically go straight into your blood stream via the tongue, not the stomach.

I hope the night goes better. I understand why you came home, but maybe the IV liquids are good.

My dad gets kidney stones, and the pain is very intense and bad for him. The only thing that helps relieve the pain is narcotics (and passing the damn stone).
With the pain killers making him sick, is he eating before or with taking the pill? Narcotics make me I'll, but it's less if my stomach is full of food. I despise Vicodin because it makes me vomit. But Percocet works well for me, and I don't get sick if I eat when I take it.
I'm so sorry your hubs has these! I hope he passes it soon.

Is he running a fever at all? Be very careful about that. It can turn into a kidney infection easily and that is hard to manage. I was in the hospital with one for a week and now am very susceptible to them. Any chills or fever have him go back right away. I couldn't keep anything down with my infection.

Zofran or phenergan can help with the nausea. Codeine based pain killers make me barf unless I take zofran.
Hope he feels better soon.

My husband has had kidney stones several times - I'm so sorry your husband is going through this! The last time he put off going to the ER, and when we finally went, he passed the stone about 2 minutes before the dr. came in to see him! It's so painful, and it's awful that your husband is reacting to the pain meds. That's the only thing that helped my husband, besides passing the stone.
The dr. told us once that 98% of stones are calcium, and therefore can be reduced through diet. My husband's are uric acid, which was really no surprise, since that causes gout, and my husband has 3 or 4 gout attacks a year. The doctor will likely give him some foods to avoid. The big one that they sometimes don't mention is carbonated drinks, like coke and diet coke. So bad for kidney stones.

We prescribe a pain med with some Zofran ODT for our patients. It is usually Lortab / Norco for pain but if that's making him sick, percocet is a good option. The Zofran ODT is "orally disintegrating tablet" so he can put it under his tongue and let it dissolve.
We also give our patients a urine strainer to use for a few days. It really is good to know if the stone passes. If it hasn't after 2 days or so he may need lithotripsy. He needs to stay on top of the fluids as best as possible to help pass it along. Beer really does help because it IS a diuretic.
Hopefully it passes soon!

Bwife, try getting some crystallized ginger. They have it in most grocery stores, or health food stores, and have him chew on it for the nausea. I also usually tell my patients if they have nausea not to drink water, but ice chips, and other fluids. Water just doesn't sit right. I hope he is better today!!

Sometimes there is nothing they can do to make them pass. My husband is currently on his 4th week off work because of kidney stones. His BIG one (un-passable) was blasted with over 2,000 jolts from the laser. The doc was able to take out 2 of the 3 pieces it broke into. His second stone was embedded in scar tissue and was also treated with the laser. Now he has to pass the smaller rock that seems to be hanging on for dear life and all the dust that the rocks became after the laser. This is really a huge deal for him and I can't believe how much pain he is in. Very hard to watch because there is nothing I can do accept keep asking him what can I do?!
Hope your husband is doing better!
