I'm guessing there may only be a few of us interested but I thought I'd start a thread anyway. Putting aside location we always love watching the World Cup and seeing some of the best players in action.
The kits
They are a bit plain except for Nigeria. Nigeria went for it. Three million Nigerian shirts sold on preorder.
Memories
The BBC have a thread which people and players are adding to called My first World Cup memory, my takeaway so far is that I'm older than a lot of them posting. Some great memories. My first memory was us trying to explain football to my Grandmother, who piped up during the match "I feel sorry for that guy in the different coloured shirt" Gran, he's the goalie and he shouldn't be on the halfway line!
BBC World Cup articles
To get our football fix last night we watched Socceraid from Manchester which was quite entertaining and raised £5.5 million. It was England v the Rest of the World. Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, David Harewood, Eric Cantona, lots of former players and celebs took part. Usain's shirt number was 9.58. The game went to pens and Blake Harrison from the Inbetweeners scored the winning goal. It was made more funny because the commentator has just relayed a story Blake had told him, that when he and his mates played football as youngsters they made him linesman!
Anyone else planning to watch the World Cup?

Many of the games are during our work day, but my husband and I are looking forward to catching what we can. DH is European born and the World Cup is one of the few sporting events he gets excited over.

I will be watching as much of the World Cup as I can. At first, I will be supporting two teams - my homeland Australia and my adopted land Germany. As the tournament progresses, I will probably be reduced to my adopted land, as Australia has a pretty tricky group.
Unfortunately, I will be in hospital for a few days during the tournament, and we will be on vacation the weekend of the final - though I assume that I will be able to watch it from Greece, even if I can't understand the commentary.

DH is European born and the World Cup is one of the few sporting events he gets excited over. For once, the times and dates of games are pretty good for us. Lots of 19.00 kickoffs. The three England group games are either at 19.00 or 13.00 with the 13.00 game being on a Sunday.
After years of watching World Cups and Olympics at weird and wonderful times this schedule makes a nice change. Hope your DH enjoys the competition.

Many years ago I was in Bulgaria during a World Cup, it was the first question the tour operator was asked on the transfer bus from the airport. Yes, the hotels will have TVs covering the World Cup but it turned out there was one TV per hotel, placed in the lobby, none in the rooms so there was an mixed group of people watching the small TV in the corner of the lobby, it was fun though.

We were in Greece for part of the last World Cup, and we had a TV in our room which had an English language sport coverage. We did watch a couple of games in the hotel TV area off the lobby, but they were in Greek. Much fun though!

Thanks for posting these links. My two favorite spectator sports are American football and soccer aka football. I watch as often as i can but don’t have any favorite team. I remember seeing a Greece vs Columbia play many years ago, with Carlos Valderrama and many of his fans wearing gold-colored wigs. It’s the only big-time game I ever got the chance to attend. We arrived a little late and I remember that the roar from the stadium was so loud that our daughter (little at the time) was crying and afraid to go in.

Not having a favourite team frees you to just enjoy the game though, being invested in your own country is not good for the nerves. I usually back the underdog when I'm watching a game between countries that I have no connction with. Cameroon was a team I enjoyed supporting, who can forget Roger Milla dancing at the corner flag.
Hopefully, the Russians don't have a vuvuzela type instrument to play during the games otherwise the TV will be on mute.

It's not for everyone @dottyscrapper but the upside is if you have things to do and places to be while games are on you will have no crowds to deal with

rickmer Enjoy the games, it's fun to see all the different groups following their country through the ups and downs. I'm still trying to process this info released this morning. " Robbie Williams is to open the 2018 World Cup in Moscow - just two years after Russian newspapers said he should be banned from performing there.
The pop star, whose hits include Angels and Let Me Entertain You, will headline the tournament's opening ceremony at the Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday.
He will perform alongside Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, just half an hour before the first match kicks off.
But he will presumably exclude the song Party Like A Russian from his setlist"

Both my sons are going to Russia for the World Cup. They've got tickets to the first 3 Australian games. I'll be scouring the spectators in case I get to see them. Hopefully Australia makes it out of the group stage.

Hopefully Australia makes it out of the group stage. How exciting for them, they need to have a uniquely marked flag (hello to Judie in Oz) that you can lookout for. Will you have good TV coverage in Australia? British TV wil be saturated with football, it's nearly a religion.

I'll follow the World Cup, even though it stings that the American team didn't qualify for the World Cup. I'll have to find another team to cheer for.

It is always hard when your own country doesn't make it. Maybe don't limit yourself to one other team, how about one from each area?? I love that Iceland made it and am looking forward to their thunder clap. Thousands of Icelanders travelled to the Euros 2016. I wonder how many will get to Russia.

People here are CCCRRRAAZZZZYYYYY about it! All kinds of sports paraphernalia in support of Team Morocco. I always know that I will lose DH once every four years when it is on. I watch a little bit. The kids all around here are sooooo excited. I hope Team Maroc goes far.
There is a lot of excitement here as Morocco is bidding for the 2026 Cup. But, they are going up against the U. S., so not sure if they will get it.

I'm going to be in Europe - all over Europe - for most of the cup. DS is trying to pick which team to go for - he has Polish citizenship, so maybe them. But he also likes France since I'm a French teacher. DD is rooting for Germany. They want to go find a pub or someplace public to watch a game or two, we'll be in France for one of their games and Poland for one of theirs so I am sure they will be able to get their wish.
I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I'll be rooting for France as I always do.

Yes, will be watching here. My 10 year old son’s soccer team will be having a watch party on Friday. And his team put together a FIFA soccer pool so I have $20 on the line so I’ll be invested. 😜

Are the Panini stickers a thing in your country? there is one couple who last World Cup drew their own, all six hundred plus, then did Euro 2016 and now plan to repeat the exercise for Russia 2018. They are using the interest in their progress to raise funds for charity. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-43891168

A guide to the Stadiums and their locations, 1800 miles from the the most westerly to the most easterly. You might be wondering about the stadium marked 9. Number 9 is "Kaliningrad is the administrative centre of Kaliningrad oblast, a Russian exclave situated on the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between Poland to the south and Lithuania to the north and east." www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41586162

This house is excited! We will watch as much as we can. We'll be gone on vacation for part of it but we'll keep up the best we can.
Since the US isn't playing, we decided we'll just enjoy watching the world's best teams and players.
Heard this morning that the Canada/USA/Mexico bid to host the 2026 World Cup won so that's exciting news.

My first World Cup memory was West Germany vs Italy 1982. I had a crush on a midfield player named Lothar Matthäus, I even had his football card. 😂😂😂 I rooted so hard for them but Italy won. Then their government collapsed and I felt bad. So long ago but feels like yesterday.
