My first World Cup memory was West Germany vs Italy 1982. I had a crush on a midfield player named Lothar Matthäus, I even had his football card. 😂😂😂 I rooted so hard for them but Italy won. Then their government collapsed and I felt bad. So long ago but feels like yesterday. Lothar is still around, working as a football commentator for German TV, and he is still a very good looking man! And he got his revenge eventually, with West Germany winning the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

I had a crush on Lothar, too, back in the day.
I'm a huge fan. I'm really torn. My conscience is killing me. It feels unethical to watch it, because it's in Russia. Very disappointed in Robbie Williams.

I will be home recovering from surgery, so any sporting event is good distraction! Even though I'm properly British, my father is actually Italian so I claim that heritage any time it's convenient EDIT Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! They didn't even qualify?! PFffffffft.

Very disappointed in Robbie Williams. I understand, I am of the opinion that local Russians are not the problem and more contact between the people of the different nations has to be a good thing. I watched the BBC interview the locals around England's training ground and they were so excited and knowledgeable, wearing England shirts and realistic about the Russian team.
To be fair to Robbie, he loves football, he and a friend started the Socceraid charity matches in 2006 as a bi-annual event. It has raised over £20 million for Unicef todate.

Neither did the Netherlands nor either of the Irish teams, their fans will be missed at the event.

Congratulations USA + Canada + Mexico on winning the 2026 bid! So excited to see the World Cup take over three countries at once. *blows vuvuzela* French gal living with a Spaniard here. WE. ARE. SO. EXCITED. Took the afternoon off to watch the opening ceremony with a few friends who also managed to get off work. Let the madness begin! Oh, the intensity of the competition is always incredible. And all the world cuisine to match the matches. And all the heavy breathing. And the exasparated cries and hand gestures when a referee seems unfair. And the dramatic rolling on the grass à la Ronaldo. And the natural affection for Argentina all the football fans will have just for Messi's sake. And the open windows during the warm summer days and evenings through which you can hear the joy and sadness from all the other folks in the neighbourhood following the event. And the chilled rosé and cava to cheer with when one of our teams does well. And. And. And... Ah, I love it all.

EDIT Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! They didn't even qualify?! PFffffffft. How did you not know? It was ALL the drama. That and the Netherlands not making it. So many hours of debating about what went wrong for these teams on radio and TV. It got very philosophical over here...

Can I ask- is this soccer or football, or are those terms synonymous in Europe and other parts of the world? I’ve never quite understood if they are different or the same. It’s confusing because our football is quite different.

I vaguely remember something, but I've been busy I can see why it would cause a bit of a crisis. I shall just have to choose some one else to cheer for, now!

How is your other half feeling about losing the manager two days before Spain's first game? I should've mentioned he's a Catalan Spaniard. This leads to a slightly different emotional reaction when "Spain" messes up...
He thinks the situation is less than ideal but also feels like Sergio Ramos will be the actual leading man behind the scenes and the team can pretty much take care of themselves (they're definitely one of the national teams that is actually used to playing together and of a good level for every player - unlike some other teams competing). They're players used to each other and not one of the young teams that is still getting used to each other (unlike France for this event). So, he's not too worried in the end.

Are we sharing World Cup-related cuteness in here as well? If so, here's the French team training a week ago with local children who won a lottery.

My DH who works night shift came home, slept for two hours and set his alarm for 5 AM (PST). He happily made his coffee and kicked me out of bed (to get ready for work). He's happy as a pig in mud watching the opening ceremonies. Enjoy all!

We randomly divide up all the teams among the six of us (dd1's boyfriend got the remaining 2.)
So, I'm rooting for Uruguay, Morocco, Croatia and England!

The middle finger during the opening ceremony of a global event that many kids are watching live is not cool, Robbie. I don't care if you felt you were entitled to it because of your bad boy reputation and possibly the backlash you're getting for taking this gig. Sidelined and off to the naughty step.

I just watched the opening ceremony complete with Putin’s speech.
Russia vs. Saudi Arabia is playing right now.

I know almost nothing about soccer, but my six year old son is getting super into it. He requested to stay home from day camp today so he could watch the first game. He generally picks his team to root for based on his favorite colors...

The BBC have a printout, hope it works outside the UK. www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/joinin/motd-kickabout-world-cup-2018-wall-chartOn Saturday, Argentina play Iceland, Messi and the Icelandic thunder clap. He might enjoy that game.
