We ended up getting 70 people into our soccer pool that we organized. Most of them are kids and it’s super exciting to see the enthusiasm among them.

Today's (Friday 15) big match is Portugal vs Spain, the two football-loving neighbours who love to hate on each other when it comes to this sport. Considering the mess the Spanish team has found itself in all of a sudden in the past couple of days, it's going to be chaos on the field. Highly recommended!

Portugal v Spain, def on our list of games to watch. Will miss Egypt v Uruguay but glad to see Mo Salah is fit to play.
Woke to the radio presenters interviewing fans in Russia including three Iranians girls who were super excited to be able to go into the stadium to watch their national team play Morocco. One admitted it would be her second time inside a stadium, when she was 15, in Iran, she dressed as a boy and went in with the Dad and brother but was arrested.

That Portugal v Spain match was fantastic. I haven’t been a soccer (football) fan but I’m really getting into the World Cup thanks to my friend/BMT donor.

That Portugal v Spain match was fantastic. I haven’t been a soccer (football) fan but I’m really getting into the World Cup thanks to my friend/BMT donor. It really was a great game, the quality of the goals, wow. I wondered at the time if Spain would regret replacing Costa and then Ronaldo took an unbelievable free kick... We had a laugh here when we realised the every Iranian has probably taken a screenshot of the moment Iran topped the group.

We watched the Egypt/Uruguay game. That score at the end was WOW!
Of course we watched the Morocco game. It is the Eid here so I was cooking a big family meal while running back and forth to catch the game. We were soooooo disappointed when Iran scored off the penalty kick. Really bummed.
It doesn't help that they are playing Spain AND Portugal next. But you never know. They played really great today. That was a brutal game. Trying to be optimistic!

Wow! Iceland are really pressing Argentina!
And congrats to Alfred Finnbogasson, for scoring his country's first ever World Cup goal.

The Iceland-Argentina game was very exciting! I was so scared Argentina would score in the last few minutes! Me too, especially when Messi took that last free kick. He would normally make a decent job at that distance, not kick it into the wall.

What a game, Germany 0 Mexico 1. That was unexpected. If Mexico could have been more clinical in the final third the scoreline could have higher. As a neutral, it was a good game to watch.

Oooops! that was a bit of an upset for the Germans then. I didn't watch but had a running commentary from DH muttering to himself in the other room

So Brazil were held to a draw by Switzerland, this World Cup is throwing up some interesting results. DD's football training tonight was cancelled, surprise not. It's England first game at the same time!
Listening to the radio this morning it seems the location of the game (Volgograd) is home to millions of midges in June. Ugh.
Todays games are Sweden v South Korea, Belgium v Panama and Tunisia v England

Football is huge in Portugal but I've never been a fan. I do watch some of the World cup matches and of course I am rooting for Portugal! In previous years, once Portugal were out I would usually support other southern European countries, and yes, that includes our main rivals Spain! GO PORTUGAL!

Wow!! So cool! So fun to read who everyone is rooting for. My mother is from Germany and my father is from Spain (my dad was almost a pro-soccer player in Spain- you have to get sponsorship in Spain to get to the pros and he had to get a full time job instead at age 15 to support his mom- his dad died when he was 4). To say we are a soccer-loving family is an understatement. I root for both Germany & Spain, but I mostly grew up watching German soccer. I'm also married to a German. I was yelling at the TV yesterday, but Mexico totally earned that win- they played more beautifully and Germany did not have their crap together I love Manuel Neuer (the German goalkeeper- he is so talented). There has already been so much drama and upsets. This is certainly an interesting World Cup

christinebk, you might be able to throw some light on the question that has been discussed in the UK. Why wasn't Leroy Sane selected for the German squad? His omission has been much discussed here (UK) but I don't know if it is completely understood.

His omission has been much discussed here (UK) but I don't know if it is completely understood. I don't think most people in Germany understand why he was left out. I was expecting him to be in and Julian Brandt left out. Some have said it is because his style of play is not suited to the German team style, but I felt last night that Germany could have used some of his speed on the wing. There was also some talk that he annoyed the coach last year, by opting out of the National team for the Confederations Cup.

I was the same way. Germany just turned over the ball far too often, and had no answer for swift counter attacks. I am also a major Manu fan - he plays for my local team, and is not only a very talented footballer, he is genuinely a nice person who has set up his own charity for underprivileged kids in the town where he was born.
