We were away for the weekend but still managed to watch a few games. Of course, France is embarrassingly bad for being the most expensive team on the grid if you do the sum of the individual players (1,41 billion €) but can't get it together as a group. Ah, typical. *French shrug* At least Paul Pogba is scoring for the national team for once (he's got a bad record, let's just keep it at that). Germany and Brazil, the big two, appear to be struggling at the moment which is a bit of a surprise. Also, Lionel, everybody's darling, what happened? Looking forward to what little (but football-crazy) Belgium can do today! All the Belgians I've come across are so overjoyed they made the World Cup this year.

sleepingbooty dd is a big Eden Hazard fan so will be rooting for him and we will hopefully be back in time to catch some of the Belgium match. I love when the smaller nations make it to the competition, there are some fantastic moments and surprises. Unexpected results keep the competition from being predictable. I always find myself rooting for the underdog.

I was yelling at the TV yesterday, but Mexico totally earned that win- they played more beautifully and Germany did not have their crap together I love Manuel Neuer (the German goalkeeper- he is so talented). I was the same way. Germany just turned over the ball far too often, and had no answer for swift counter attacks. I am also a major Manu fan - he plays for my local team, and is not only a very talented footballer, he is genuinely a nice person who has set up his own charity for underprivileged kids in the town where he was born. They were caught out a lot with only two defenders in position. Their problem now is that every other manager is taking note.

I got home yesterday to see my 17yo son in his Swiss shirt and hat and draped in the Swiss flag. Within 2 minutes of me arriving, Switzerland scored the tying goal against Brazil and my son went flying around the house screaming GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL.
I am super sad I was not speedy with my camera.
Hopp Schwiiz! Allez la Suisse!!!

Here's what's the most funny. French is not my mother tongue, but I have spoken it most of my life (I am an American by birth, but a Swiss citizen) and I had NO idea that most of those phrases were not actual French. I knew they were slang, but just not Swiss only slang. I live in the US and am around a lot of French people and whenever I see them, they make me talk in French because they say they've never heard an American speak French with a Swiss accent. But the article isn't about football? It's about Swiss-Romande slang.

I was going through all the recent Buzzfeed France articles related to Swiss things to find the one I was referring to again. I mixed things up along the way (and I failed miserably on that test as a Frenchie ). Here's the correct one!
Belgium played really well! 3-0 is a great way to enter the competition.

Belgium did play well, the goals were great. England won but they made it a slog. I really dislike it when teams use underhand tactics rather than trying to win on their talent. I thought VAR was suppose to deal with incidents like this (see link), very annoying that even if the ref did not catch it the VAR team should have. The kicking ankles, stamping on feet etc. ugh www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44528980The tip tap football going sideways and backwards made for nervy watching, the phrase run, go forward might have been shouted out a couple of times in our house and I'm not even English.

I don't think most people in Germany understand why he was left out. I was expecting him to be in and Julian Brandt left out. Some have said it is because his style of play is not suited to the German team style, but I felt last night that Germany could have used some of his speed on the wing. There was also some talk that he annoyed the coach last year, by opting out of the National team for the Confederations Cup. I am also a major Manu fan - he plays for my local team, and is not only a very talented footballer, he is genuinely a nice person who has set up his own charity for underprivileged kids in the town where he was born. Thank you sueg answering the question. Sorry, I try to keep up with what is going on in Germany, but I'm in the US, so I actually didn't know the answer.. sueg have you gone to any Bayern Muenchen games?? It is on my bucket list to go to a World Cup game. Maybe since North America won the bid for 2024, hopefully this will happen!

It is on my bucket list to go to a World Cup game. Maybe since North America won the bid for 2024, hopefully this will happen! We have been to a couple of Bayern games. It is really hard to get tickets to Bundesliga games they play - Allianz Arena has been sold out for every home game since 2009! We did get to one game when one of DH's work colleagues offered us his season tickets for a match, as he and his son couldn't go. We were also lucky enough to get tickets to a Champions League game, when Bayern Played Atletico Madrid while we were on vacation in Madrid. That was absolute madness! We have also been able to get tickets to pre-season games - every 2 years (odd years) there is a competition here, the Audi Cup, which has Bayern and 3 other teams and we usually go to one of the 2 nights of that. I've also been to a Germany v Italy International friendly, which I really enjoyed. Munich will host a few games of the 2020 Euros, and Germany is bidding for the 2024 Euros, so I imagine we will also get a few games here for that if we win the bid.

What is everyone watching today? I watched the start and the end of Colombia v Japan - I went out for a walk just before half time, but I saw all 3 goals. Poland v Sengal is about to start, so I'll watch a bit of that. Both of these games have Bayern players in one of the teams, so I have an interest there. Not sure if we'll watch Russia v Egypt later. Maybe just the first half.

That they did so well in the Euros and are now in the World Cup is testimony to their terrific football training setup.

LOL Got the right list, thanks! Loved it and shared it with my Swiss kids. My daughter is studying in Switzerland now and LOVED the videos - the Swiss are very vocal when they win. Not like the Italians and Spanish, but it's still something!

I finally watched a game, Spain vs Iran. Spain won, but needs to step it up big time. Their goal was pretty much an error, it ricocheted off an Iranian defender. Gosh, I wish I didn't have sooo much work to do, I would be watching so many more games...

Yes, Spain weren't convincing and with time ticking down the Iranian player messed about trying to do the fancy throw in. Needless to say, the internet had things to say about it. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44555796

wellway - Thank you for starting this thread. My daughter starting playing soccer when she was four and still plays today. She followed World Cup '94 with a sticker book when she was 7. She still has a beach towel with Striker the mascot of '94. She is planning to attend games in 2026 with her friend since 8 (whose parents are Brazilian) when they will both be 39! Since the US isn't in this World Cup, we are rooting for Brazil or England--(lifelong Michael Owen fans). Anyway, best of luck to all .
