This is a spin off the slug in the iron thread.
Due to my recent surgery I didn't work for a few months and the night before my first day back I found my work pants had been folded up in the wardrobe and were all creased, so I got my iron out...then spent 10 minutes looking at it and pressing buttons, I realised that I had no idea how to turn it on I had to google the model find out. I can't even remember when I last did any ironing. Definitely more than 5 years. This was a new one I got on sale and I'm pretty sure I've never used it. I also don't even own an ironing board. My mother was horrified when I told her.
My work uniforms are all a polyester/cotton mix and if I hang them up straight out of they dryer they don't need ironing...and they are patterned, so that hides any creases as well. So yeah, there could have been a whole family of slugs happily living in my iron without my knowledge.
Do you still iron things? What and how often? or who's with me and can't remember how to turn theirs on?

To be honest, DSO does most of the ironing in our house. I just leave mine to pile up, and only iron what I need to wear that day. Then when the basket is overflowing, DSO can't take it anymore and does it for me! I try to buy work clothes that don't need ironing, and most of my dresses can be washed and hung up without ironing. DS's school uniform needs to be ironed, and I iron t-shirts and jeans etc. We recently bought a new iron and I had to pull the instructions out - it doesn't have a temperature dial. Every other iron I've owned had different settings for silk, cotton, denim etc but this one has just the one setting. It's weird but seems to work.

I used to iron almost every single day, the clothes I would be wearing to work. Without fail, had to be done. A year or so ago, I had some serious remodeling done and it was kinda hard to get to my iron and my ironing spot. I slowly started to do without ironing. Kinda of a day to day thing. * oh I can get away without doing it today, way too much trouble *. Ha !! That’s been way over a year and no ironing whatsoever. 😊

Oh, and we just bought a new washing machine as well, and it has a steam function. You can put things like lined jackets and tailored pants in there to freshen them up, and they don't need to be ironed.

I iron my clothes daily. DH's clothes all go to the dry cleaners and are ironed there.

I hate spending the money on new household appliances but then I love to use the new functions when I do get them.

I iron whatever I’m wearing everyday (my dd and dh do their own. It takes about 2 minutes and I’d rather do that than stand ironing for hours. We have a big enough laundry where the board can stay set up all the time. I like wearing ironed clothes, no issue with people who don’t.

I iron every week. It's most my DH's pants and shirts for work. There's a few pairs of shorts and dress shirts every once in awhile.
I actually enjoy ironing. I find it relaxing, especially when I have some good music on.

Only occasionally when quilting or sewing. I don’t actually iron clothes. Any clothes that need ironing or pressing go to the dry cleaner.

I iron more in the summer because I have a lot of cotton and linen things that really need to be ironed to look presentable. My steamer gets a lot of use all year to freshen up things.

My closet is so jammed full that anything that goes in there needs ironing when I take it out. So some things are left hanging over the dryer and some things are worn wrinkled and some get ironed. Oh and I use my iron for all sewing projects and some other craft projects. I love how to use it to fuse my book covers together that I make and then it works wonders to dry and straighten projects that I am working on.

I love ironing. I iron just about everything that is laundered. I generally watch a murder investigation documentary on my iPad while I am ironing.

No. DH gets most of his shirts dry cleaned, and I buy no-iron clothes as much as possible. I hate ironing. Erin

Nope unless it’s unavoidable like something needed for a special occasion. DH has done his own ironing for decades. He’s been the one who has bought our last two irons and I admit I had no idea how those particular models worked. My clothes get folded or hung straight from the drier. I have no idea how to use the lawn mower either and no intention of learning.

Yes, quite a lot. I don't use my tumble dryer to dry stuff straight from the machine and using a dry cleaner for everyday stuff is way too expensive and too much pfaff to take and collect. I only iron clothes (not bed linen, tea towels etc) and tend to stand and do a couple of hours worth at a time while watching the telly then put it away again. But now I want a machine that has a steam function AussieMeg!!

I iron most things, except socks, underwear and towels, usually as soon as the laundry is dry or at least within a day of doing any laundry. I don't mind ironing. I even iron my " no iron" bed sheets. Love crisp pressed bed sheets!

Hmmm, what is this "iron" of which you speak? Is it a noun or a verb...?

DH irons his own work shirts - he usually does 5 of them on SUnday evening while I am out at my knitting group. Most of my clothes are non-iron - I live in jeans and t-shirts. I have a couple of nicer pants/shirts that need ironing, but I tend to buy things that won't need it.

None of my clothes need ironed. My work pants are such a nice fabric, they don’t need it. I usually hang them to dry, and they just a wrinkle free. Same with my shirts. I have an iron, but last time I used it was when DS graduated and I needed to iron his gown. The same will likely be said at the end of May when DD needs her gown ironed.

No, and haven’t in years. My DH might, but he’s dressing down at work right now. When he has to dress business casual, he gets his shirts washed and pressed at the dry cleaners.

I suspect if you did a poll including nationality, you’d see a big divide between the Brits and folk from the the US. I know OP is in Australia and I’m not sure where Australians generally are with ironing, but I’ve noticed on laundry threads over the years that ironing isn’t really a thing like it is for the Brits. I think our electricity is so expensive in the UK, using a tumble dryer all the time and therefore having less creases in clothing is not something that most folk do. Certainly most folk I know, dry clothes outside or dry them on an indoor clothes airers (which they’ll do quickly as homes in winter are often centrally heated and cosy). Where ironing is seen by some in the UK as a chore, it seems to be folding clothes from the dryer that is the chore for non-ironers. I iron just about everything except most bedding. I don’t find it much of a chore as I use the time to catch up on whatever series I’m watching on Netflix.
I wonder what other Brits think about dry cleaners. To me, a dry cleaners is a place I visit once a decade maybe when DH’s kilt or kilt jacket needs a freshen up, or a large duvet needs a wash (although it can be cheaper buying a new duvet than getting one washed). I actively avoid buying anything that is dry clean only as I really, really grudge the cost of paying to get clothing cleaned.
