Well, we should know soon, as she is currently being induced! I didn't mean to cause such a stir, I thought this would be a safe place to release my shock. I hope the name IS a nickname or a joke, but knowing the parents, it might not be. Not the worst name, just unusual for our family. SockMonkey, thank you for the terse post. I am well aware of glass ceilings, male dominated corporations and unfair biases that can prevent a woman with or without a name such as Precious, from being considered for a CEO position. And my relationship with the parents will be just fine- regardless. Now I'm off to change the spelling in my post, then to the hospital! My post wasn't meant to be terse at all; please take it with the compassionate challenge with which it was intended. Best wishes to the new parents (and to Pickle...or whatever her name may be)!

As for Sparkles...nickname among family and friends-fine. Professional name-nope. depends on her profession, though, doesn't it? I certainly hope the whole "Pickle" thing is a joke... and in the OP, the name Deanna is spelled with the NUMBER 3- was that a typo?? or is that shades of the 1980s, where people named their kids after numbers and such? ETA: dang it, when will I ever learn to read the entire thread before posting? my jokes are only funny to me, because everyone else has already seen them... sigh. I hope your everyone has an easy time of it at the hospital, and please come back and update us on what the baby's name really is!!

She is here! Born at 0838 this morning!! Yep, it’s little P!ckle D3anna (spelled weird to protect privacy.) 7lb 9oz and 20” long. Her parents are not happy about the name- I don’t know them well, but I didn’t realize how ultra traditional they are! I feel bad for DN and wife- her mom told her she needs to pick another name. Nephew’s parents (my sister and BIL) were surprised and not thrilled, but just smiled and stayed in the background of the drama of her parents. I’m heading home in a few- been a long night. So welcome to the world little P!ckle.......

Wow. I can't believe they really did it. It's not cute, it's not sweet. It's an albatross that poor child will carry around for the rest of her life. Why can't they give her a normal, non-traumatizing name and then if they want to call her Pickle as a nickname do that?

Well, I must admit I was hoping it was a joke, but she’s not my child to name.
Congrats to the new family! Hopefully her grandparents can get past her name and enjoy their new grand baby!

I admit, it would be extremely hard for me to contain my shock upon hearing this in person. While I wouldn’t throw a tantrum over it, I would probably let out an “wow are you serious?” Before I could stop myself.

Well, it seems like that has put the parents in a pickle as to how to respond to it. Ugh, not a fan of the name at all. I don't mind unusual names, my mother has an unusual name - but I really think they are not thinking long term with this name choice. I just couldn't knowingly name my child something that I was possibly setting them up for a lifetime of cracks about their name. No matter how much I liked it myself. If I liked it that much, I'd give it as middle name. But I really hope with the prevalence of unusual names, it isn't an issue for the kid.

Well maybe you can crush their dreams by telling them that there are 1,643 other Pickles in the United States. So clearly they are not that clever😜. Maybe they should reach out to one and ask what it’s like growing up with that name.

Congrats on the birth of your great niece!
I wouldn't name a kid Pickles, but I certainly don't think it will doom her to become a stripper. I'm an attorney and I don't think she would have trouble finding a legal job just because her name is Pickles. My husband was a lawyer with a Fortune 500 company for over 20 years before he retired and I just asked him if he'd interview a candidate for an attorney position who was at the top of her class and was named Pickles. He gave me a funny look and said "sure."
Pickles can always legally change her name if she doesn't like it when she is older or she can just go by something else.

Aw man, if it was an elaborate joke it would have been SO funny!
But I think Pickle is cute, personally. There are a ton of botanical names like Daisy, Lily, etc, it’s kind of like that to me. It’s no worse than Deedee or Bambi or god forbid Dorcas. I did super want it to be an elaborate joke because that is awesome though!
My name is quite funny in the random country I’ve ended up spending so much time in, but my parents certainly never knew it would end up that way. It’s just my name, not weird at all in the US, giggle worthy here when someone repeats it here and looks at me like “really?”. It’s equivalent to Pickle, for sure! So I’ve come to view names and the judging thereof to be a kind of cultural bias thing- when you step outside your own you realize it’s just a name, and it means different things to different people and groups, and it shouldn’t mean anything at all except what you call a person and it’s theirs and that’s just fine. Should she ever move to Korea, everyone can pronounce it and it will be completely non remarkable, whilst my US acceptable name will continue to get the giggle. My name is t even exactly like the equivalent Korean word, but people repeat it and then say the Korean word (for ant) “oh like this??” And laugh. Because what a silly name! Who names a kid that! Americans in the 70s, I guess.
Kiss Pickle for me and tell her Ant also hopes she is Senator Pickle someday.

you can't even abbreviate that name to something livable... This is my daughter Pickles, but she goes by P (pee). Way to make your kid tough, she better learn how to fight because she'll probably be tortured. Grade school is going to suck.

Give me a name, any name, and I can make an insult or dirty rhyme about it. It’s a special skill, but I highly suspect other grade schoolers possess it. It’s not limited to the Pickles and Sparkles of this world, trust me.

Oh trust me, I know. My name has a VERY dirty variation. I figured it out in Jr. high and never told a SOUL. Not even my BFF. I knew that could come back to haunt me. lol Having said that, why make it easy, at least make them work at it.

This is VERY true...my oldest teased because there is a playground/PE game that shares his name, my middle ...well no one ever gets her name right anyway, and the little one is traumatised because there is a horror film with her name as the title and she hates horror (and I was surprised at how young her classmates were when they picked up on that connection)

Congratulations and welcome to little Pickle!
It's not a name I would choose (I think as a nickname would be better), but I wouldn't say anything to the parents about it.
At least everybody knows how to spell it (I hate "creative" spellings for names, especially when they don't even pretend to follow the rules of the language).

Thanks for all the well wishes, funny comments etc!! The name just isn’t growing on me. And she doesn’t “look like” a P!ckle- she looks like a Gretchen to me (no clue WHY). She is such a good baby and so dainty!! Now for DN’s parents- I hear from my sis that they are still very upset and refuse to even say the name! I sure hope they work it out.

Not sure if it matters, but this thread shows up as the 10th result when I do a google search for the baby's first and middle names inside quotation marks. I'm not sure using the ! and the 3 really help. (ETA: or it may just be that too many others have also mentioned the name.) If you are concerned about your niece and nephew seeing it you may want to just request that our admin delete it. (Can/will she even do that?)

Maybe her nickname could be Picki, Picky, Pickie, as in Vicki, Vicky, Vickie?
