Call me crazy but the name Pickle doesn’t bother me and I really kind of like it. . Then again, I also LOVE the name Cricket...I blame Young and the Restless for that. It’s the names with 15 extra vowels that makes my skin crawl. And random Y's. When ds started Ele school, there was a set of siblings at the school - Khamryn and Khalyb- both boys. He has also attended school with boys named Austyn, Logyn, and Prestyn.

My niece is nicknamed Pickle, but I don't call her that. Just her immediate family gets to call her that. But IDK if I'm down with it as an actual name...and I'm always very lenient with names because I think the world would be a boring place if we could only name our kids John and Elizabeth.
It could be cute but not something I'd saddle a child with.
It's true that name threads here often show a very strong WASP-y influence in determining what's acceptable and I don't care for it.

They probably just mixed up the letters in case anyone did go in there. I hope LOL, just for kicks and giggles, I put the word PICKLE in the online Scrabble word finder and there are NO other words that come up with the same number of letters! I think all the letters in PICKLE DEANNA are up on the wall. That’s a lot more letters to mix around.

At least it’s spelled properly I suppose. It’d be worse with a cre8ive spelling like Ppikkyl.

I don’t know, I actually like the name Pickle more than I do the name Deanna. If the name really is Pickle I hope you will call the baby by the given name (if that’s what the parents are planning) and not circumvent the wishes of the parents with another name.

It is definitely as much DN as his wife! He’s always been a different type of kid, real dry personality. She’s due any time now, and I pray they were playing a joke! I swore to my DH that I would keep it to myself and hope it’s a nickname or joke. This is going to be interesting for sure! If it IS her name, I’ll be calling her DeeDee or Ann/Anna. I absolutely agree that you don’t hear of CEO’s names Sparkle, or Desire or Precious. 1. If you want a happy relationship with your nephew and his wife, you should call the baby what they ask you to call the baby. 2. If you don't hear of CEOs named Sparkle, Desire, or Precious, why might that be? I'd like you to unpack that a bit and consider that comment and also consider the power structures that have been in place for hundreds of years that might make it difficult for a woman named Precious to become a CEO. Please consider these comments carefully and think about what you mean when you say them.

Given the problems with bullying, it annoys me no end that parents want to saddle their children with these idiotic names. Celebrities who people emulate have been leading the way. The rest of the world needs to realize that Beyonce and Kanye can name their kids anything they want and they will not be mistreated because of their name. Their famous names will open doors for them for the rest of their lives. Other children are not born with that privilege.

Oh, I just realized that when the child's name is shown as first name, middle initial, she will be Pickle D. as in 'pickled.' Ugh!

Drew Barrymore named her daughter Olive because it stuck after reading the baby was the size of an olive. Maybe the baby book publishers are to blame as the baby was compared in size to a pickle and it too stuck. Poor kid.

My parents were planning on calling me roly if I was a boy. Thank god I was a girl I can only imagine the bullying particularly as I’m not exactly thin

And DH pointed out that IF it is Pickle, their last name starts with a D, so she would be Pickle D. D____ (pickled). Oh man I have a headache!!!! Wasn't DeeDee Pickles the mom on the show Rugrats? Am I making that up? I cant wait for the update!

Surely the better way to go would be for parents to teach their children not to bully and not be in denial that their little snowflake would ever act like they do towards others. I've heard far worse than Pickle OP. I don't have a problem with this one. What I do think is unfair on children is the creative spelling that some use for quite common, well known names. The child is forever going to have to point out the way they spell their name.

So the baby I am adopting has an interesting name. It was t originally going to be his name but when the county took custody they named him Freedom, yes they named a child out of spite. Older children all have normal names.
Our adoption is almost complete, just waiting for our court date. We are changing his name to Jamie, we have been allowed to call him that for awhile now. But you should see the stares I get at the Doctors office when they call Freedom. My favorite is when the automated appointments reminder phone call vibes through - hi we are calling to remind you about your appointment for Freedom.

There are so many things that people will ridicule that a parent has no control over - a child's looks, their interests, a lack of aptitude in popular things like sports. Picking a name that is sure to be mocked or misspelled is an easy way to start the child out with a disadvantage.

Picking a name that is sure to be mocked or misspelled is an easy way to start the child out with a disadvantage. I really hate this conversation. I had a last name that was made fun of all the time when I was younger. It was a simple word that was easy to make fun of. This did not start me out with any kind of disadvantage. I survived. Probably even grew a backbone, and some empathy because of it. I know we're talking about choosing a name that may be made fun of, but there's no guarantee any name won't suffer that. My last name was a regular word in the dictionary and kids found ways to make fun of it. My daughter went to a very multicultural elementary school. So many different names from so many different backgrounds. Different sounds and lots of spellings that don't make sense in English. None of it was unusual to any of the kids. They were just names of their friends. Adults who are only comfortable with Karen and Jim are the ones who need to back off or lead the way to accepting different names without judgment and a better conversation about them. I may not like the name Pickle, but I'm also not going to moan about the injustice and hardship this child will be saddled with the rest of her life at the "stupidity" of her parents. That just makes me part of the problem.

I teach about 500 kids a year. I've taught for 25 years. That is a lot of names.
I don't remember every Cameron (one year we had 13!), Joshua, Kaley, Jordan, etc. They all blend together.
I remember Ocean, Diamond, Cinnamon, Rainbow, Blue, etc. I can picture their faces as I write the name.
I'm not sure an unusual name is a disadvantage. In some ways it is an advantage.
We have kids with all different kinds of names, from a lot of different ethnicities. I have never heard a kid make fun of another kid's name. I've heard them make fun of a lot of different things (which I shut down immediately) but never a name.
I like unusual names. I'm not crazy about creative spelling, but that is just because the kid is going to have to deal with people spelling it wrong. My last name is a pain in the butt because of that. At least with a name like Pickle, people won't have a problem spelling it.

Well, we should know soon, as she is currently being induced! I didn't mean to cause such a stir, I thought this would be a safe place to release my shock. I hope the name IS a nickname or a joke, but knowing the parents, it might not be. Not the worst name, just unusual for our family.
SockMonkey, thank you for the terse post. I am well aware of glass ceilings, male dominated corporations and unfair biases that can prevent a woman with or without a name such as Precious, from being considered for a CEO position. And my relationship with the parents will be just fine- regardless.
Now I'm off to change the spelling in my post, then to the hospital!

Looking forward to the update!
Pickle could be a cute name. I am also so traditional with names that I would only use it for a nickname. I wonder if it could also be a family name on her side.
Nevertheless, the post above about unique names with predictable spellings has stuck with me. I actually liked being the only Melissa when I was young. The name became more popular later on. The only thing I did not like was not being able to buy personalized products like pencils in the store. ANything with my name on it had to be special ordered. Those pencils my mom ordered with my name on them were cherished possessions for years! Same for the stickers. I hoarded them both! LOL

My kids have a friend named Dillon. His nickname since we’ve known him in kindergarten has been Pickle. Dill Pickle. He’s 25 now and we still call him Pickle. My bosses granddaughter’s name is Basil and her middle name is Bear. I’ll never get it, but that’s not up to me. Everyone has their reasons that make sense to them I guess. I hope your Grand niece is healthy and happy no matter her name.

I don't think it's unusual at all. Drew was also the voice of the Christmas cartoon ‘Olive the Other Reindeer’. Not sure if that was before or after she had her daughter. It’s more of an old fashioned name though. Olivia is much more popular.
