Loved Irina's dress this week -- I can forgive the sheerness -- like the judges stated additional layers should be added so not as sheer. I still don't like her attitude. Biddell's was okay - but I felt like I've seen similar dresses. Dimitry's was okay but not luxurious enough for a Royal Ball . I agree Michelle and Anthony Ryan's were the worse. And sadly I did agree Anthony's was the worse. Boo hoo, I really liked him.
For a luxury Royal Ball Gown Challenge, I thought Alyssa's white dress she wore looked like a casual summer outfit and not fitting for this challenge's theme. And I loved the Guest Judge Iris -- such an icon at 95!

I actually liked Anthony Ryan's dress although it did not meet the challenge. But, between his dress and Michelle's, his was still better. Did you notice the little pompoms around the cut-outs...really? Irina's dress was the only one who fit the challenge so she deserved to win. The pleating on Biddel's dress looked like a lot of work but I still found it ugly.
What's the next challenge? I forget.

Seriously could none of them follow through this week? I think Michelle should have gone home...it was just awful, and the most casual looking to me. I wish they wouldn’t have picked a winner at all. It would be a lesson to them all to actually complete the challenge they were given. I think they got lucky and let off light. I agree!! I don’t think any of them really completed the challenge. I loved the losing look though. I thought it was really pretty-not royal ball pretty but much better than the other one in the bottom.

I wish they wouldn’t have picked a winner at all. It would be a lesson to them all to actually complete the challenge they were given. I totally agree, really underwhelming this week. Irena's was the closest, but none of them were "royal ball-gowns" I really liked Biddel's but I don't think it met the brief either. Michelle needed to quit her "I don't do gowns" bitching. Every challenge there's probably someone who doesn't make that sort of garment but they don't carry on about it endlessly. I didn't like how they picked on Biddel for using that particular type of fabric because it held his design so well, yet they all make negative comments when someone picks the wrong fabric for their design. He obviously knew what he wanted and selected a fabric that would work...now suddenly that's a bad thing? They are so hypocritical sometimes. I thought the old lady judge was crap, no-one there is designing for a 95yo so she needed to stop with "I need sleeves" and "I couldn't wear that" routine. If she could have worn any designs then that designer should have been immediately eliminated. It's not Project Dress Your Granny.

This was a weird challenge. I would have thought that, if they didn’t know what to do, they could have just made a poofy dress and did some sort of technical detail. Why make all those sundresses? For a ball? For a royal ball? I thought Irina’s dress was beautiful. Biddel’s dress was interesting. I don’t think those were pleats—they were bias strips. He chose the fabric because it wouldn’t fray and was stiff. To me, that is choosing the right fabric for the look. Is Michelle aiming to be a future judge or fashion commentator? We see a lot of her commentary. What was that when Biddell? Dimitri? Went to sew something and Irina was on his machine and she said to just use her machine? Why didn’t SHE just use her machine? At this point, they are all so tense to win that it’s not really fun anymore.

Starting this week’s show.
Love Alyssa’s opening dress!! Super cute and I’m a sucker for the yellow shoes.
I really like this family challenge. I’ve liked most all of the challenges this season.
Pink is a terrible color on Dmitry. He looks almost vampirish.
Ok be back at runway.
**************
Ok I lied it’s not runway yet. But out of all the hundreds of fabric options at Mood, why do they end up with boring or ugly or stuff they can’t use?
And nobody gave them a photo session clothing consultation. Clearly. Michelle’s would send me dropping the camera and running.
*********
I really love the family visits!

Part II
Runway:
Alyssa - like the outfit except for the saggy cleavage - put on a bra. And is that a macaroni necklace?
Ann looks lovely!
For the first time ever, I don’t care for Georgina’s look.
I see a lot of neckerchiefs like Isaac’s around here - on cowboys & firefighters.
Biddell - WTH on the first look. Gymboree from the 90s?? Mom’s look is meh and the boy’s look is ok.
Dmitry - Love the black dress! Classic Dmitry. Boy’s look is meh. He gets a BIG WTF for the pink velvet thing. There’s exactly nothing that I like about that and if I was her I wouldn’t be happy.
Michelle - Boy’s look is ok but is that kerchief in his armpit?? Grandma totally owned that awful print and was obviously having a great time. Stole the show! Girl’s look is just ok, not super flattering. Not really a cohesive grouping but then neither were the others.
Irina - Like the first look but very businesslike. Kid is a hoot!!! Last look is my favorite of the night. Most cohesive of the group.
********
My votes:
Irina to win I honestly don’t know how to rate the others. I had Michelle going home but Grandma may have saved it for her.
********
I didn’t see that win coming, but I do agree with the decision on the “twist”.
On to next week! Was that Mondo I spied in the preview?

I'm glad Biddel won, and for the fourth week in a row, I would have sent Dmitry home. I knew they would keep all four. Yes, that was Mondo in the preview.

I didn’t like any of the looks last night.

What was Issac looking for? I swear he wanted them all in denim or white shirts and khaki. Matchy-matchy. And I’m not sure what he’s doing with his scarves/neckerchiefs/ascots. I’d an odd look EVERY runway show.
Is it bad that I likes Dimitri’s dress? But that pink velvet was an abomination. That tie dye pantsuit was maybe even worse. And then no one was sent home. I never really like that. Just eliminate someone. Surely there will only be one winner?

It was so terrible...I thought it looked cheap, it was ill fitting and extremely unflattering. I dont like it when they dont eliminate someone, like you said there’s only going to be one winner, just get on with it. Plus I feel like it was a waste of time when the same four designers compete next week.

I agree. That whole cut-out thing is getting old. He did it on the short sleeves of the pink velvet top, like that made it better . The cut-out didn't look good on the young man's sweater either. Dmitry should have been sent home a few challenges ago.

I would have sent Michelle home honestly. Her outfits were hideous.
I loved the funkiness of Biddell's. Irina's mom looked like a stuffed sausage..that skirt did not flatter her at all.
I knew nobody was leaving. Although Michelle should have.
ETA: Last week,s runway was awful. Those were not "Royal ball gowns" in the least. The queen would have fainted if anyone showed up to a royal ball in those dresses. Michelle's looked hideous and like a beach cover up muumuu. Irina's was so inappropriate. Bidell's was intriguing but not a ball gown and dimitri's was a red carpet but not royal ball.

imsirius I agree about last week's show. Not one of them were appropriate for a royal ball. My friend and I were talking about it and said Irina's was merely the best of the worst as they were all terrible. And it was annoying that the designers were complaining about making a ball gown because it's not in their wheel house meanwhile they competed in unconventional material challenges. Is making a garment out of plane parts their norm?

I'm glad Biddel won, and for the fourth week in a row, I would have sent Dmitry home. Ditto! It's clear that Dmitry and Michelle are this season's judges favourites (who knows why) and as soon as they were in the bottom I knew they'd keep both of them too. Dmitry and his old Russian lady dresses are so boring and there's nothing fashion forward, new or interesting about them. I don't know how he keeps getting away with it when other designers would have been canned. His look for the boy in his family...holy hell, they looked like a bad set of scrubs that the orderly from the hospital took a nap in. He made that kid look like a tired 30yo and not a boy of 15. There was nothing "cool" about that outfit. Michelle is another one who thinks if she can talk up her designs enough everyone will forget how bad they look. I HATED what she put her boy in too - at least he can buddy up with Dmitry's boy so he's got company when the other kids make fun of them both. I was a bit shocked at how coldly Irina took the news that her mother's breast cancer was progressing. Maybe it was editing, but it didn't seem to affect her at all.

Just watched the latest Family episode and wasn't extremely wowed by any of the designs. However, to make 3 outfits for 3 varied body types in 2 days!!!! I have to give it to the designers that they even completed 3 looks at all.
I agree with Bidell's win and Irina's being safe. Overall though I felt the looks were not "designer" looks and LACKED each designer's signature touch. Other than Dimetri's one black dress. I hated Dimitri's other looks ESPECIALLY that pink and black pants suit -- it was so hideous. And the teen boy's look made me cringe. I also hated Michelle's looks -- if she had made better fabric choices I think the designs would have worked but the young girl's dress that material looked like upholstery fabric so heavy and the grandma outfit -- that fabric was hideous. The boys jumper -- OH NO. I think Dimitri had a slight edge, very slight, and I felt that Michelle should have gone home.
I am okay with all four of them going to the end. I am interested in seeing collections from all four.

An interesting read popped up in my news feed today. I hadn't realised that this series was filmed 18 months ago! I guess we are lucky to see it all but it must be frustrating for whoever won to have to wait so long for it to air. In Australia any TV show that has a money prize at the end...the money doesn't get paid out until the episodes air, not sure if that is the same in America.
This is the article: link
Personally I don't have an issue with product placement...no matter how bizarre, because they have to pay for making the show somehow, and I'd rather have a show to watch with product placement vs no show at all. But I thought it was interesting to read a bit about how it all happens behind the scenes.

Just started the show. I think I like Alyssa’s dress. I do love lace.
WTH is Biddell’s theme?? He’s by far my least favorite. I just don’t care for his attitude.
Interesting combinations of fabrics at Mood. It should be fun to see it all work up.

Critique:
Love Michelle’s green coat. Peach/ black is super pretty but looks an awful lot like Alyssa’s opening scene dress. Huh.
Ooohhh I love Dmitry’s first two looks that he’s showing, and the fabric that Ann liked is right up my alley.
Irina’s ideas are really fun. Looking forward to the full collection.
Biddell....has moved from WTH to WTF. The blue jacket is beautiful but that’s because of the color.
Really enjoyed Ann as mentor this season.

Workroom:
I really enjoyed the helpers segment. They all seemed sincerely happy to see each other. Mondo with Irina was especially sweet.
Biddell’s looks are sort of growing on me. They’re way out of my style but they are innovative and different. But he upgraded again from WTF to WTAF with that bondage thing he was wearing *shudder*
Still loving Dmitry’s looks but why so short?? That intricate lace was begging to be a long gown.
I’m glad Irina was able to let her emotions out. It was healthy for her and also moved her along in her designs.
Michelle - I dunno. I can’t quite figure her out.
I have definitely enjoyed the camaraderie between the contestants this year.

Runway:
OMG Alyssa. You’re missing half of your dress. Looks like it came from Fredrick’s of Hollywood. And it would be absolutely gorgeous with a gray lining!
Georgina’s is stunning.
Irina’s collection is going to be hard to beat. I’m glad her family was there!
Wow Biddell may have just beat it. Not my style at all but wow!
Michelle - still can’t figure her out. But it was a nice collection.
Dmitry - I’m so disappointed. I was really looking forward to his collection and there are several I don’t like at all.
I think Biddell’s got it.

I can't believe Micelle won. Hers was my least favorite.
I LOVED Irina's collection. It was beautiful.
Bidell's was very runway but not very wearable.
I like Dimitry's as well. And I agree that lace fabric was crying to be a gown.
My ranking was Irina, Dimitry, Bidell, Michelle.
But for some reason, the judges really like Michelle this season.

For once I completely agreed with the judges. I hated Irina’s mostly due to the red and blue fabric, it was way too stiff and bulky. I know she said she needed it for the structure, but it looked terrible when it was time for the judges to look at it up close. I think she could have gotten structure with interfacing, and used a much better fabric. It looked very homemade when they focused in on it, it was not well constructed. I loved her last two looks, but the others were awful. I appreciated Biddel’s, but it was too weird for me. I really liked Dimitri’s but it wasn’t as cohesive as the others and I just thought Michelle’s was cooler. I like the way she mixes fabrics and her styling was by far the best, imho. Her clothes are out there, but they all are. I loved her peach outfit. I am glad she won, I thought her stuff was the coolest and most fashiony.

I find it hilarious that there was a US winner...that was the given all season.
That aside, I think it's also funny that every season they shill..it must be fashion forward..it must be runway worthy..we want out of the box! And yet, the most BORING collection won.
I knew the minute Michelle said she was struggling financially that she was the winner.
I loved Biddell's collection. It was original, out of the box, dramatic and wow! Those cork pants and his last gown were freaking amazing.
I also thought Dinitry's collection was awesome. That coat with the faces was so interesting and beautiful.
Didn't care for Irina's it looked stiff and blah and hard to wear. The white outfit they all raved about reminded me of a gei for karate.
I think Biddell was robbed..not only was he Canadian and had no chance anyway, his was the most creative and original collection.
