I hope you can get the inpatient placement and meds adjustment he desperately needs. I will keep your Eli in my prayers.

I’m so sad to read this. Mental health treatment in the U.S. is awful. Somehow, it’s even worse for teenage boys. There is such a ridiculous wait for inpatient treatment beds for teen boys and emergency departments are not equipped to handle prolonged mental health treatment—which often makes things worse for patients. Sigh. I wish I could offer something besides long distance hugs.

And let me add to the discussion - we have Tricare health insurance, which will cover us in any state. It is excellent in these types of cases.
We live in VA, but are close to MD, WV, PA. We couldn’t find placement in any of those states either. And we would be willing to pay personal $$$ to get an appropriate placement for him, but even personal - not insurance - $$$ wasn’t/isn’t enough for a placement.

So sorry it's come to this for your family. I really hope the right doctor sees him. Sometimes the right one gets it and can straighten things out for you.

I'm so sorry, Elaine. Sending my best for Eli and the rest of your family. I hope that somehow, he can receive the help he needs.
It's shameful what a mess the mental health systems are. Absolutely shameful.

Elaine I am so sorry your son and family are going through this. The heath system and especially the mental health system in this country is an enormous failure. I will pray for your son and your family that things will improve very soon and you find exactly what you need to treat your son. Sending you big cyber hugs!

Sending huge hugs to you Elaine.
And I’m right there with you—fuck their wall.
It’s time to actually start taking care of the mentally ill, veterans, handicapped, elderly—invest in programs that actually make life better for people.

Didn’t Regan die of Alzheimer’s? Another fucking mental illness. Yes he did. He also stopped all fetal cell research for Alzheimers. He got what he deserved.

I'm sorry to say that I'm not at all surprised. The number of beds today is just abysmal. I'm truly happy that we don't have a pre-1970s view on the mentally ill that means a lifetime of institutionalization. But anyone who's been touched by mental illness knows that as much progress has been made with treatment, there will always be a need for beds - usually temporary, but it doesn't change the immediate need. It's not actually about insurance or even self payment - it's about recognizing that there will always be a need for inpatient support of the mentally ill and providing the necessary infrastructure.

elaine I am so sorry Eli and your family are going through this. Two years ago I went through a similar hell with my dd. Self harm. Suicidal threats. On the advice of the therapist she'd been seeing, I took her to a ER with youth mental emergency unit. Even though she was deemed an immediate threat to herself, it took days to find any place that would keep her inpatient. And even then, even after finding a bed, it was only short term. ((Hugs))) to you and Eli, Elaine. I hope you are able to find the help for him that he needs.

I am praying for your Eli. And for you. You must be so tired and frustrated and scared. Please check out the Lindner Center of Hope in Ohio. It's an amazing center. I have a friend who went through inpatient treatment there. I live 15 minutes from the center, and you are welcome to stay here if you can get Eli in. (((HUGS)))

I feel for you. My friend is going through the same thing. She was hospitalized 4 times last year, she has electroconvulsive therapy every 2 weeks and group and individual therapy every day. Just before Christmas her insurance company decided she was cured and doesn’t need anything anymore, canceled her ECT appointments and transferred to outpatient care. She can’t even see a psychiatrist for meds, she is waiting for an appt with a psychologist. She will probably be hospitalized by the end of February at this rate she is going.

Absolutely, there is a chronic shortage in available services vs patient numbers. Its the biggest challenge faced. You know, the ACA provides within it a LOT of required coverage for various types of mental health benefits. Is it enough? Not at all, but its mostly because of the issue above - its required to be covered but getting services where you can even use the coverage you pay for, is a massive challenge. Something has to change.

Elaine, your story speaks volumes about the healthcare crisis here, but more than that, the mental healthcare crisis. Mental health patients need to be treated as any other patient and with dignity and respect. I live near a city w/a huge homeless and mental health problem. Nothing can be done about it, because there isn't any funding and these people are throwaways by the government. They're tossed into the streets and then berated for being there.
In the case of Eli, you've been his greatest advocate for 17 years. As a psychologist you know what to do and how to do it, but if the healthcare system won't cooperate w/you then it's just frustrating and sad. Do any ER's have a psychiatrist or neuro-psych on call for mental health patients? In this day and age we see drugs for mental illness on television commercials, many people are open about being in therapy and one would think that it's less stigmatized and more accepted, but it sounds like we're still treating psychiatric illness w/barbaric treatment in so many cases. Your ds has a specific need and it shouldn't be rocket science to find him an appropriate placement in a facility that can properly evaluate and treat him. I could go on and on, so I'll stop here.
Elaine, you're in my prayers and this is just heartbreaking to hear.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I have a sister with mental illness. and she barely hangs in there. having a child and other relatives with autism.. I am convinced our country does not care about people with mental illness, or disabilities. we underfund, and don't provide services. more people could work with support, and supportive housing.. a key component. we could hire all those lovely immigrants to provide supportive care... and elder care and hire construction workers to build in patient care sites, housing ..
it is frustrating..

I read your linked article and every word of your gut-wrenching post. I wish I had some actual help to offer. My heart aches for what Eli and your family are going through. I do send my warmest thoughts and wishes for some type of long-term help to be offered for Eli. And I wish for some peace for you in this. It's all I have for you right now and it feels woefully inadequate.

My prayers for Eli and your family. I have had to deal with this in the past with one of my children for partial outpatient hospitalization and inpatient hospitalization and multiple ER visits. We are lifetime advocates for their care.

It breaks my heart to know what you are going through in your quest to help Eli. You will be in my prayers that something will turn up soon to help. It seems like weekly some awful situation arises whose cause we blame the lack of adequate mental health care on. And still nothing is ever done to alter the situation. Reading about what you are going through in your life really brings the whole crisis into focus. I'm so sorry.
