For me, it's:
-greeting cards -umbrellas -state vehicle inspections -school pictures -kids' clothing, especially shoes -vitamins -bras
You? What really gets your goat over how much it costs?

Our next door neighbour who has a new chain saw, jig saw thing-OMG! He never stops! He even built himself a tarp so he can work in the rain. He isn't working away from home currently (maybe he lost his job?) and starts every single morning around 8:30 am and doesn't stop until 7:00 at night. We have no idea what he is building, but he could have built the Taj Mahal (spelling?) by now. It's a b*tch for someone with migraines. Anyone know of some real, heavy duty earplugs that really work? We can hear him right through our walls.

School pictures. DS had his mandatory senior photo taken in a tux for the yearbook (we will do professional photos later this month.) I paid $20 for the sitting fee and it's $49 for an 8x10 photo. That's about a $70 for 15 minutes worth of work. I'm in the wrong business. There are over 850 in his senior class. It's not like the photographers weren't raking in the money. And the photos are just horrible. Weird shadows and DS has a squinty smile. But I feel like a bad mom if I don't buy at least one photo.

Fudge shops on the boardwalk in NJ.
For the many of you who may not know what I'm talking about, let me elaborate . . .
So you want a pound of chocolate fudge. And this is what you tell the salesperson. They then proceed to take 3-4 PRECUT blocks of fudge & put them in a cute little box on the scale. AND THEN THEY SAY, "It's a little over, is that OK?". And, of course, you say that it's fine. Don't get me wrong, they're not cheating you, but they are getting you to spend more than you intended. Multiply that by the hundreds of customers they have in a day. And it's not an accident - as I said, the blocks are precut, so they know exactly what they're doing. And they ALL do this. Total racket.
I definitely agree w/school pictures. They totally have you.

Cable tv - especially since I only watch about 10% of the channels.
Hairspray - it appears my favorite has been discontinued. I used to pay about $5.50 for a can. I started looking at other options and was shocked to see some cans are almost $20.
All feminine hygiene products. They know it's a necessity and can get away with charging an arm and a leg.

I worked at a very expensive deli and that was something they taught you when you were trained. You ALWAYS put more on the scale then the customer wanted and then said those very words..."It's a little over, is that OK?".

Dental care. I think it is a huge racket and my last experience just cemented the idea in my mind. There is no way I needed 18 x rays and then six months later another 18. I have never had to have x rays more than once each year. When I pointed this out the tech checked my chart and said "Oh you don't have insurance. Ok, we don't need to do this." Yeah, I thought not. And that is what makes insurance so expensive for everyone.
And of course feminine products, razors, car insurance, cell phone plans, cable tv.

You ALWAYS put more on the scale then the customer wanted and then said those very words..."It's a little over, is that OK?". I worked at a deli to and was trained the same exact way. I was a rebel though and finally stopped doing it because it pissed the customers off and I would just put what they wanted. Now sometimes I would accidentally go over and I would take it off and some would say "no just leave it" some wouldn't say anything.

razors....why oh why are they so expensive? One of the best things I ever did was join the dollar shave club. They send you a sleeve of razors every month. I get the four blade plan and it's $6.45 a month. Love it!

Why on EARTH did they tell you that you needed EIGHTEEN x-rays? A regular set is four pictures at my dentist. I don't think I even had 18 for my ortho in January. (I mean, I know they did it because it's a freakin' racket, but what did they BEFORE they knew you had no insurance.)

I had never been to this office before and went I went in to do the x rays I was expecting the typical 4 my old dentist did. And then they just...kept....doing...them. I even asked the girl doing them why there were so many and she didn't really have an answer. They did not charge me extra for all of them so I just let her do what she needed to. But then to be told 6 months later that I needed them again? No, absolutely not. I have only had 3 cavities in my whole life. I had no pain or reason to suspect I had any problems that would require further x rays. They were just money hungry.

Oh, that kind of racket-
Health insurance for sure!
The cost of prescription medication in this country-the USA. Seriously!
Dental care-you have to be really careful about this. There are so many shady dentists in my town (maybe all over?) that will tell you that you need thousands of dollars of extra dental care (gum surgery), but when you see someone else for a second opinion (or talk to your family) you find out it's completely false. This has happened to 3 different people in my family! Turns out it was the same shady dentist in town.
Dr. Oz.
Certain supplements-totally depends on you, your blood work and your physician. What you truly need is COMPLETELY a different story than what is being sold on TV or online every time you turn around. For instance, I take Vitamin D 5000 IU, a Complete Mineral Complex supplement I buy from my doctor because he prescribed it because I'm a vegan (and all of this was prescribed based on my bloodwork), I take a Homocysteine Supreme supplement because I have a genetic disorder that makes it impossible for me to get my vitamin B12 from my food (again proven by blood work and prescribed by my doctor), and I take a Food based vitamin called Rainbow Light Active Adult 50+ also supported by my doctor. These I DON'T think are rackets or I wouldn't be taking them. But they are all I take and like I said, I wouldn't take them if they weren't prescribed by my doctor and if he didn't prescribe them without having my blood work results in his hands and if I didn't trust him 100%.
Gluten Free Food-advertised as Gluten Free Food that didn't have any Gluten in it to begin with.

To take that many un necessary pictures is definitely a breach of best health practices.
