To be fair, McDonald's held their coffee dangerously above industry standard temperatures and were told to lower the temp. They didn't and someone burned themselves with it to the point of needing skin grafts. So suing in that case was not greed, but paying medical bills and holding McDonald's accountable for handing customers dangerously hot liquid when they knew better. I didn't say the McDonald's suit was about greed. Then I'm not sure why you included the McDonald's case in with this.

They say a photograph is worth a thousand words and the one on “smirk kid” certainly is, if you look at the entire photo. What you have are a bunch of 16 year old boys out and about trying to act like they’re a big deal and coming off as a bunch of smart ass punks. It is easy to find the “picture” as all you have to do is goggle “smirk boy” and the picture pops up. Look closely at his buddies. They were clearly edging him on. This same group of boys heckled some girls that day as well. On the original thread about this boy there was a link to a video I think is where I saw it. One of the girls took a video of the hecklers. I also suspect smirk boy wore the MAGA hat to get a rise out of people. It fits in with the smirking and heckling. I put this behavior down to the way their parents are raising them. If smirk boy’s parents don’t want to see their kid in an unflattering light in the media, then raise him right instead of filing frivolous lawsuits. A photograph allows you to create a narrative in your mind based on a snippet in time, as opposed to a full video that shows all of the event. That 8 second video that does not show what the girls said before they started recording is useless in determining if the guys were the instigators or the girls were. Yet here you are...once again, telling everyone else how they should think, what they should perceive...based on your opinion.

Third lawsuit - NBC/MSNBC for $275M. So far, that's $800M in harm this young man's lawyer will have to prove. More than 50 media organizations and individuals including Sen Elizabeth Warren have received letters threatening legal action against them, so more lawsuits are likely. Is this about harm or is this about a bonanza? Cash grab and more notoriety.

LOL Look who you're responding to, the queen bee of trump apologists. It is ALWAYS someone else's fault! It is hilarious to watch her cram those square pegs in round holes where it suits her narrative, then at the same time, trample anyone else with a different point of view or when then present facts that prove her wrong. Same shit. New day.

It's a big payday attempt for the Sandmann family and their lawyer - one L. Lin Wood. He also filed defamation suits on behalf of John and Patsy Ramsey, Howard Stern and Herman Cain. He's a high profile ambulance chaser. I do wonder when he'll go after the liar in chief and his propaganda network for all their online/on air lies. His client list could be enormous in that case. I had to look up the disposition on his case against CBS (for the Ramsey family). Dismissed with prejudice (meaning dismissed and cannot be refiled). John Ramsey's separate suit dismissed as well. I’m guessing most of these lawsuits will be dismissed and whatever is left standing will be settled, but not for the outrageous sums of money. I think this is what he and his family are going to be banking on---cash grab from those whom they sue that just want it to go away, and pay (it could be cheaper than litigation). Entitlement. Affluenza. Privilege. All those things that these white wealthy family's will die on a cross to protect. You knew it would head this way as soon as he appeared on the talk shows. And given the video, who is to say that the drummer was not blocked by Sandman. He was walking through the crowd with no problem whatsoever, until he came to Sandman.

I think if his family is upset at anyone besides the teen himself, they should be upset with the school and the chaperones—and themselves—for not thinking the situation through before letting the group go to the protest, as well as how it was handled when they were there. That was my very thought when this whole thing went down.

imagine what Christine Blasey Ford could sue for. Maybe she should sue the Dems that leaked her letter. She could, since she knows about where the leak came from. I would be fine with it, too. That's a difference between you and I, I don't I don't look the other way and ignore offences just because a person is in a certain party.

I think they are opportunists. They are hoping that the companies will settle. Even if he gets a very small portion of that money from them, he will be set. Notice that they are also suing the companies that fit with the MaGA and trump theme of “fake news”. Yes, that's what it seems to me as well. I mean, we all know this is America and you can sue for millions if you burn yourself with a hot cup of coffee. But the deluge of lawsuits here is a different matter altogether. It smacks of greed, not principle. Ugh. I use this as a measure for whether someone knows what they’re talking about or not. If you cite the mcdonalds case as an example of a frivolous lawsuit, then you obviously never read the actual lawsuit.

Think what you want to think, measure what you want to measure, none of that is of consequence to me.

I don’t need a narrative to read his smirk. It speaks for itself. The same way a woman is judged for her resting bitch face? What an insanely asinine statement. Judging a book by its cover is wrong and just plain stupid.

Judging a book by its cover is wrong and just plain stupid. I'll admit - when this story first came out, I was angry. I felt like Sandmann was a smug little jerk and I kind of still feel that way. But the thing is, he is a kid. He's not a fully formed person yet. It's hard to reconcile this with my belief that his behavior wasn't entirely innocent in this situation. He and his classmates were acting like little fools and their chaperones completely failed them. Their behavior was inappropriate and disrespectful. Not to mention the video that surfaced of the Covington teens catcalling a woman and joking about rape just prior to their confrontation with Nathan Philips. At the end of the day, though, he is a very young man. (And he was not the one joking about rape - I would feel very differently had he been.) I do think that the judgments that have been leveled against him have been harsh. Much has been read into the fact that he simply stood there. I will admit that what I first read as smugness could also be a 17 year old kid thinking "holy shit, what do I do here?" Having said that, I think the lawsuits are ludicrous. I don't see what actual harm came to Sandmann. I find the attacks against Mr. Philip's service to the country gross, especially for people who support President Bone Spurs and claim that they are angry because Colin Kaepernick insulted the military/flag/usa. You can't cry about respecting the military while insulting the record of a soldier who served (in any capacity) in a war that your beloved president dodged.

First, the kid saying "It's not rape if you enjoy it." was in response to someone saying racist things. It was a sarcastically placed statement that was meant to convey the idea that if you believe the absurdity you just said then you must believe things like this. Damn near every video you see is clipped of the context before he said it in order to fuel the narrative that the Covington school boys are awful people. If you have to clip away the facts to do that, you have to question the people feeding it to you. Look for the full clips, some of them are even included on the original thread here. Second, the Covington kids in the 8 second video were not catcalling they were yelling MAGA at the girls and we don't know why. What was said to the boys ahead of time? The girls conveniently didn't show that part. Third, no one is attacking Nathan Phillips for his service. What a gross mischaracterization of what has been stated here. What people are having issue with is his stolen valor... his lies about his service. Something that if you have the respect for the military, you have issue with anyone committing an act of stolen valor.

Although I think the vast majority of people's minds are made up about this incident. I found this article interesting - warning it does contain profanity: www.thestranger.com/slog/2019/01/21/38181376/i-thought-the-maga-boys-were-shit-eating-monsters-then-i-watched-the-full-videoMy view hasn't changed much in that I think when you're attending a rally in Washington DC, you should accept and be prepared for a whole host of behavior and the poor behavior from the first group, does not justify the ultimate buffoonish behavior by the students - I will acknowledge that the initial media reports were very sensationalized and did not depict the entire encounter. I'll also say that defamation suits are hard to win, so don't anticipate a win here - but clearly the lawyer expects at least a settlement big enough to be worth his time.

What puzzles me about this whole thing are the death threats made against this kid. Death threats. I can't wrap my head around that. Did you also read the reports of the boy who had the luck of having the same name and about the same age? Death threats against him. He went to a family wedding and there were protesters. I can't even imagine.
