Changed the title since paint is done but we have a million decisions to make. I'm making most of them whole hes at work and teaching myself to do things from YouTube and DIY sites. I need all the tips and suggestions! Am I going to regret doing everything in a warm white? The renters who were here left a mess so I've got some work to do but it's time to plan. It's a kitchen, dining room, living room and 2 bedrooms on this floor and then the downstairs is being done this weekend. I adore the retro wood in the kitchen so I'm going to clean it up but its staying. I'm thinking warm white and the pops of color to accent...or should I go with color?

Because the floor has so much yellow undertones, I would steer clear of yellow based hues. I would pick something with neutral undertones. Check out this article - LINK

I think if you go with too much color with that wood, it's going to look and feel too dark. SO I would go really light. I just got a SW color to redo our bedroom, and it was a warm cream, called lotus pod. I love it

We have similar wood (I think) and just painted the kitchen and living room Revere Pewter. It is a nice neutral that isn’t too boring but also not too bold.

Are the kitchen cabinets oak or maple? Whatever they are, I like the color. We have red oak and it is not so great looking (which is why we are finally painting them white).
I would probably stick to a neutral on the walls and use color in your decor and wall hangings.

The color of your floors is very close to my floors and the wood blinds in the front of the house. Our designer chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster White (#7008) for the walls and cabinetry. It is a bright, clean white and pairs nicely with the wood tones.

Take a peek at Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray. It's a super easy neutral colour.

I would stick with an off white for a rental. Colors tend to look dated too quickly. We used SW Crescent Cream

BM Ballet White - great overall warm neutral. Is that your dishwasher on the dining side of the island? That will either be genius or painful.

Is that your dishwasher on the dining side of the island? That will either be genius or painful. I first thought "that is weird", but realized it's genius, as it fills that impossible to reach corner. I have SW Mindful Gray paint on my walls. My trim is honey oak. It looks great and is very light in color. You can't go wrong with a warm white or cream, if you prefer.

I think he's decided on SW Alabaster.
I cant do grays at all, it literally makes me feel like I have no soul. I need warmth but I agree, no yellows.
Patching is done, sanding tomorrow, taping Friday, pride Saturday, and hoping to have it painted Sunday.

I would use white on the walls. Bring in color with small appliances or kitchen necessities. You can use a colored rug if you like rugs in front of the sink. I do, and have a really pretty teal rug. I think your DH is sitting there trying to figure out why the dishwasher is in such a weird location facing away from the sink. But, at least there IS a dishwasher!

The dishwasher is super odd but my cousin put it in and it makes perfect sense knowing him. The dishes are stored in built ins on the opposite wall but I havent decided if i am going to love it or hate it.

I don't have paint suggestions but I hope you post after pics. I love seeing room makeovers. I agree, that dishwasher placement is odd, I hope it works out for you.

We painted today actually. Its getting there. I've still got to do the bathroom and then the floors are next. I burst into tears as I was scrubbing the counters and I realized that it has the same counters as my Gram and Pap have in their house. I couldn't figure out why it felt so familiar. Kind of cool.

It is no really unusual in an old home to stick a dishwasher there. It was an empty corner. Just stack the dishes on the counter and the other person can put them away.

At least you have a dishwasher, no matter where it is. I’d kill for one, but it’s crazy expensive to add one to an existing kitchen with 1932 plumbing.
I hate corner cupboards. Even with lazy susan’s, they’re a bitch most of the time - so that seems like a smart use of a wretched corner space to me.

I can’t remember... did you buy that place? We kind of inherited it. It's a property that has been in the family since it was built in 1965. It was my uncles mothers home until she passed and my aunt and uncle decided to keep it for whoever's wanted to live there. 4 cousins lived here pre-kids, and we are the first empty nesters. When no one in the family wants to live here they rent it out and save the money for maintenance as it needs it.

It's been a really cool project, my aunt and uncle are some of the best people I know and have always had projects that bring us together. It's been fun to fix it up for each person/couple/family. Sometimes someone moves in because of financial stress, sometimes as a temporary place when building a home or whatever, sometimes while house shopping, for us while we decide where we want to move permanently. We still pay rent into the fix up fund and coordinate any projects while were living here. My oldest cousin added the silly dishwasher and also a deep cabinet for dishes in the dining room. It worked well tonight actually. He rinsed and handed the plates to me and then I ran the dishwasher and put them right into the cabinet. It might just be brilliant as long as you have a rinse person and a dishwasher loader. Here is the little book area before and after. Itll change some as we move in but we brought a few dishes over today. Sanding the floors tomorrow!

This house is much smaller than our current place. Were going from 3300 sq ft to 925. I know it will seem smaller with our belongings in it but we talked tonight about how much more efficient the space is. Every inch of this home is functional. Some of the ways they used normally wasted space are really neat.

Today in teaching myself to sand and refinish hardwood floors. They put stick on tiles over the hallway and it's terrible to get off. Yuck. The floors are much blonder under the varnish than we thought.

Its encouraging to see it looking so much better. The last people here did a number on the place. That cabinet is one of my favorite things. This closet is behind it. The step ups serve as a ladder to the attic and are built over the stairwell. This is behind that cabinet

I would stick with a light neutral like a creamy white. That wood is beautiful. Then accessorize with color. Can’t wait to see it done
