A friend just posted that she is angry that one of the officers at the county fair didn't walk her daughter and her friends to their car when they wanted to leave. The girls are 18 and going to college soon. There was no direct threat, just that they felt creeped out walking 4-5 blocks. I am really surprised at how many people are posting in support of this, and being disgusted with the officers. I pointed out that there probably weren't enough officers to walk every girl to her car, and the officers were supposed to be AT the fair, not 4-5 blocks away. Friend says, "There were two officers, one could have walked the girls."
Do you think it is fair to expect the police officers to walk the girls to their car at a gathering like this? And to be upset that they didn't? Or do you think it is unreasonable to expect that? Curious what others think.

Nope. With no threat, they shouldn't expect a personal escort. With what happened at Gilroy, I'm sure they've been instructed to monitor the safety of those IN the fair grounds.

Completely unreasonable. You are right, they could not leave the fair unattended to walk someone to their car. Large gatherings of people have become especially vulnerable. The officers needed to stay there.

Nope. If they a reason to be afraid (someone was harassing them, following them, etc) then sure. But otherwise? Nope.

An unreasonable expectation for them to have.
The county fair should have provided people to walk other people to their cars, not county-paid officers who are at the fair to protect the people that are AT the fair.
What would the uproar be, if the officer was busy walking people to their cars, if something happened at the fair? People would be complaining that the officer wasn't doing the job that they were paid to do.

If they can't walk 4 or 5 blocks to their car they should not be out without parental supervision no matter what their age.
I have a 19 yr old dd and I just texted her this question and she thought the girls were being ridiculous and are probably to stupid to be allowed in public.

Multiple girls walking together. Nope, not reasonable. If the officers are assigned to the fairgrounds they can't just leave to be someone's personal security and they shouldn't be expected to.

Nope.
Now with that said I have asked a box boy to walk with me at the grocery store when it was late at night BUT our local store allows them to walk with you and load groceries into your vehicle.
My Uni also had a service where you could pick up a blue phone and ask to be walked to your vehicle anytime. They had dedicated security for that and golf carted you to your car. Parking lots were HUGE and we had a few rapes on campus, day and night

This makes me think of the summer camp I run. We require elementary aged kids to be signed out by someone on the approved list, but middle school kids do not have to be signed out. There are parents who are upset their elementary kids have to be signed out at all, ranging up to people who are angry that we don't require it for middle school. You just can't win.

If the parent is that concerned she should have dropped the girls off and picked them up. Not the fair’s responsibility.

Nope. That is an unreasonable expectation. If you're going to be "creeped out" walking back to your car, choose a different parking spot.

No way!
In fact, they are probably assigned an area that they shouldn't leave, so that each "zone" is covered and secure.
Really very immature and entitled of the adults asking to be walked to their car.

That’s everyone’s own responsibility, unless there’s an actual threat. I can’t imagine a fair providing escorts to people’s cars.

The officers are hired to be AT the fairgrounds, not blocks away. If these girls felt the need to be escorted out afterwards they should have gone to the fair in a group with guy friends included or had their dads take them to the fair. Their expectation was not reasonable.

If they are walking 4-5 blocks I’m guessing they are not parking in the designated parking area which (at least for my fair) is much closer (albeit $20), but is well lit and secure. If the girls felt strongly they needed an escort it it the responsibility of one of the parents to drive over and assist. Or don’t be cheap and all chip in money to park in the fair lot. It is not the responsibility of the police to leave a large event to be personal escorts.

That would be a crazy misuse of the officer’s time! Facebook can be dangerous sometimes. I’ve seen some crazy ideas validated.

I'm sure they also had officers at the entry/exit gates to ensure safe entry, so those officers probably could have been aware of them for at least a block or two, so no. If they were that freaked out, they could have called the non emergency number and asked, but I'm sure they would have been told there would be no officers available.
