I know there’s a lot of RTS (Janet) fans here. Any thoughts on her shifting to Patreon and leaving YouTube?
I think it should be a good platform for her, and think it’s cool of her to only charge $1/mo. Lots of people are freaking out on FB in Love RTS group though.

I think some of the women are like my mom, not very savvy on the computer and were comfortable with YouTube but this takes them out of their comfort zone. I'm okay with $1 a month and I signed up today.
My only qualm is that when I signed up I purposely unchecked a lot of the boxes so I will only receive e-mails when Janet posts something, but now I have gotten a few e-mails from new companies today which makes me suspicious they sell your e-mail to advertisers. Not that big of a deal, I will just try to unsubscribe myself from receiving e-mails from those places.

Thanks for sharing this. I don’t have Facebook, so I wasn’t aware of the switch. I really enjoy her videos so I will moat likely subscribe.

I think it’s a good choice for her. She’s worth way more than $1 a month but I appreciate that she’s keeping it so low. I’ve never even considered subbing to anyone else on Patreon. I learn a lot from her videos and really enjoy them. I’m still trying to figure out how to watch the videos on my smart tv, though.

I think she really put a lot of thought into what was the best platform for RTS since yt made content changes , fines etc. I’m sure not everyone is happy but I think she put a lot of thought into it for sure and this seems like a good option. I subscribed, there are quite a few things up I need to watch!

Jesus $12/ year is really not a lot to charge people I can’t see why the hullabaloo over that. I follow someone on YouTube who also does Patreon, and has seperate content for that, but I chose to take a workshop online instead. I still have no issue with the $12 it’s more the time aspect when I’m done with my workshop then I’ll reconsider. For me the TIME is at a higher premium than the $1

Oh wow, hadn't heard this yet, thanks for the heads up! I love Janet, and she is definitely worth a buck a month! Will the old content stay on YouTube or will she be moving it all over? And did she say why? She's charging so little, she's obviously not gonna make a killing.

I hadn’t heard this and was wondering why she hadn’t posted this year! I’ve never done Pateron and will need to see how that works. Right now I can watch YouTube easily on my iPad or Roku while scrapbooking. Can I do the same? I’m wondering how many scrapbookers are going to make the jump. I’ve heard quite a few talking about it and it could get expensive depending on how many do and what they charge. RTS at $1/month is more than reasonable.

And did she say why? She's charging so little, she's obviously not gonna make a killing. She's not trying to make money off of it. She said she's concerned about the new regulations that will require her to label her YouTube videos child friendly (comments off) or adult content. Well, it's not adult content; it's just papercrafting. But for liability sake, because she does not want to be held responsible for what commenters say, nor does she want to have police her comments, she is opting to go with child friendly (comments off) for the older videos that she's leaving there. I suspect it would be too large of an effort to bring her whole catalog over to Patreon. I don't know that I'll follow her to Patreon. I rarely have time for her videos anyway. But never say never, I guess. I do like her a lot. I check in with her Love RTS facebook page and I follow the # group on instagram.

I follow a lot of you tube crafters, but nobody that I would be willing to pay for the privilege. There is just too much free content. In addition, at some point even my favorites I have to take a break from because it just becomes so repetitious.
I feel the same way about all the streaming channels. We have no cable and pay for Netflix and Prime. I refuse to pay for anything else. I stick with those two and watch broadcast TV with commercials. We don't even DVR any longer. We watch a lot less TV now since we dumped cable. I just wish it translated into more reading and crafting for me. The internet is my biggest time suck.

I think she's going a bit overboard. Plenty of other crafters/card-makers I follow are still feeling comfortable on YT, leaving comments on, etc. I think she's overly skittish. It's her channel and she can do as she pleases, and certainly $1/mo is very reasonable if you're a fan, but I'm glad not everyone is being as nervous about a CLEARLY CRAFTING channel as she is.

I’ve never watched her but am looking for scrapbookers to follow. I am going to watch a few of her videos on YT and if I think she’s for me I have no problem paying to follow her to patreon

I haven't made the jump yet. Twelve bucks isn't a big deal for me. I just don't know if I want to start paying to see something I can normally watch for free. I have to decide if I get enough out of her content. I do love personality and organization though.

wow- I hadn't seen yet that she made a decision about it... but I also haven't been on FB for a couple days, so I haven't been on the RTS FB page. I don't know the first thing about Patreon and how it works, so that would be a concern for me, too. I just like that watching videos on YouTube is easy.
I do know Janet puts a LOT of effort into her videos and her viewers (including me) get a lot of content for free, so I don't begrudge her getting money out of it- is Patreon a service she has to pay for to use? I'll have to check out her channel and the FB page, to read the latest.
eta: I know $1/month is VERY cheap for paid content; it's not the cost, it's the hassle-- like someone else said, I have a tough time paying for something I can get for free otherwise (scrapbooking videos in general). I'll have to think about whether I *regularly* get enough positive out of her content that I want to join Patreon just for her.

Janet clarified in later posts in the fb group that the move to Patreon is not about coppa. It’s about YT’s terms of use and changes that she feels will come around eventually so she felt it was best to make the move now.

I just watched one of her new videos, a new toolbox series. She mentioned that she’s hoping everyone there likes talking about scrapbooking. Something about not feeling pressured to hurry up. I think there were reasons for the move beyond the changes to you tube. I haven’t tried it yet, but I have a MacBook and I think from Patreon I can use airplay to play videos on our Apple TV or fire stick.

I have no problem paying $1 a month for her content. I love her chattiness and sometimes just play her in the background while I’m scrapbooking. Patreon is easy on an iPad or iPhone. I’m sure I could get it on my tv if I tried but I only watch my iPad while scrapbooking.

Kind of makes it easy to decide not to join. I can watch on my iPhone or iPad, but don't see myself getting out another device to watch one scrapper.

Ok, not being able.to watch it on my smart TV in my scrappy area might be a deciding factor.... me, too- I watch videos on my laptop while I'm scrapping or at a retreat... I don't want to haul yet another device out only to do that for one scrapper, either. I didn't know Patreon was platform-specific; I just thought it was a different hosting service / website.

I am able to watch the videos on my pc and laptop but I’m having trouble getting them to play on my tv. I’m going to try an hdmi cable from my iPhone to the tv and see if that works. It’s not a deal breaker for me, though.

I’m not very tech savvy, so I’m not sure why some people can’t play them on their devices or TVs? I have a MacBook & iPad that Patreon plays on and I can use airplay to play videos on my Apple TV or firestick

I also didn't know it was only for Apple products. That definitely counts me out.
ETA: Thanks everyone for setting me straight. Glad to hear it's more accessible than I'd first thought

I don’t think it’s only for apple. I don’t think you need an app either, you can just watch it from the website. On android devices, you should be able to play it from the website as well. There’s lots of discussion on the Facebook page, someone there might be able to help more.

I was unaware of the new YouTube rules— this has nudged me to investigate. I’m not a video watcher, but all other content (posts, downloads, etc) has been easy to access on Patreon..
For me Patreon is like public radio — I don’t *have* to pay, but because I’m in a place I can (which wasn’t always the case), I choose to.
