and they are limiting the # of pkgs of toilet paper and paper towels, some of the canned goods, and even bags of rice that you can buy at one time. There was still lots of everything on the shelves, just a tiny bit surprised that things are already being 'limited'.

I think that’s smart seeing the issues they are running into at a lot of locations.

I think it’s smart, too. People were buying ridiculous amounts. Even with IBS you do not need a flat cart full of cases of TP!
A few of our local Costco are temporarily stopping the free samples. That is going to really make some people mad since that’s half the reason they shop there. I would love to shop a sample-free Costco, but I’m not comfortable with that level of exposure right now.

Thanks! You’re close enough to me (Benicia) that what goes for your Costco may go for mine, too. I haven’t been there in almost two weeks, and this thing was still in China back then, as far as I knew. I’ve been a little afraid to go back, with the stories we’ve been hearing.
Anyway, I wouldn’t need more than one package of paper towels or wipes or whatever. That works fine for me. What were the lines like?

So I was heading to Target today for a new pan and to look at candles. I looked in the closet to see that we only had 5 rolls of toilet paper. For the first time in my life, I bought toilet paper. I didn't know what brand or what ply we usually get. I had to laugh. I got a little confused when the package said 18 rolls = 72 rolls because I taught fifth grade math and that conversion never came up and I am pretty dang sure that each roll is not worth four rolls of other types of toilet paper. Target had a bunch of supplies on pallets at the front of the store, there was a semi stocked aisle of TP and there were signs all over limiting the amount of wipes and hand sanitizer you could buy.
So now I can take off buying TP off my bucket list.

Good deal on limits. We couldn’t get our normal tp and paper towels since our usual run was during the time people were stocking up. Now dh can go this week.

Kind of funny how each grocery store works in my area.
One has limits. 2 others don't have limits.
Have no idea if Target or WM have limits. Only went to Target for CVS meds.
Only items you can't find here are alcohol and hand sanitizer.

They should have put limits a week ago. Our store is sold out within an hour of opening. Seeing pictures and hearing of people with the flat carts and filling them up in nuts. But what you need and move on.

At our store there was a limit to 5 per customer for the tp and paper towels. I think that's still a lot, so I don't think people would have a problem with that. They could always go back the next day to buy more (if they don't limit by knowing how much is on your Costco card).

YEsterday we went to costco for fruit and samples, but no samples. I thought that was why and asked and that's what they said. I will miss the samples! I feel bad for the employees though. I think they are a separate company, so not sure if they are out of work or assigned to another job.

I know 2 people who work behind the scenes. This is what one said: The samples are being pulled because inventory levels are too low to facilitate the demo properly.

I haven’t been in Costco when they have samples in a while but they used to be independent and not someone that they could move around to another job. They used to always be older much older employees that couldn’t run a register or stock shelves.

My mom's sampling job is not thru the store she works in, she works for an outside company, so there is no other job she can be moved to. She is out of work until further notice.

The stores are in contact with their suppliers, and their suppliers have likely told them that there will be delays.

Ours is doing that too. Our Albertsons is also limiting thugs like TP, wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues and paper towels. A number of the shelves for those items were bare.

Why are people stocking up on toilet paper? Maybe the answer is obvious and I just don't see it. We usually go to Sam's Club (no Costco near us) about twice a year and stock up on toilet paper and paper towels and trash bags, etc. I am guilty about using a lot of paper towels but with 3 kids and 4 cats in the house, I need to. If we run out, I just go to the store and get some more before our next Sam's trip.

It isn't that the supply of them will be gone as much as knowing that other people are stockpiling them and leaving others without. We have weather alerts for snowstorms frequently for about 6 months out of the year. You can count on people (generally who aren't used to storms) going out and getting all of the eggs, milk, and bread. The joke is that a storm is coming so you better make French toast.

We went to Costco this afternoon and it wasn't all that busy. They were out of most of the items people have been buying tons of like TP, Sanitizers, etc. Everyone had probably hit the morning hours, but now that you mentioned they weren't serving samples, people probably went somewhere else for lunch. lol What I thought was nice was people out in the entry way wiping down the carts as well as a woman in the eating area that was wiping down the tables and seats as people left.

My grocery store has limits on all the mentioned items. There was plenty of everything on the shelves today. I was even able to buy a big jug of hand sanitizer (70% alcohol) for regular price.
Another grocery store close to me has a mandatory hand sanitizing station set up before you can check out, besides the wipes they have for your cart before entering. It’s a well known store for senior citizens frequenting, so I think it’s great they are trying to protect their most popular clientele.

It has been recommended that you have what is needed, including items you’d use when sick, basic homes supplies, and food in case you can’t/shouldn’t go in public for 2 weeks. There is also concern about the supply chain in general the longer this goes on.

The point is to have on hand extras of what you’d need/want if you can’t get to the store for a week or two, either due to quarantine or supply disruption. People have different soup/ rice/ pasta/bread preferences, so amounts consumed/extra stocked fluctuate. But everyone needs TP. And the extra paper towels/cleaner are people being more prepared for illness sanitation.

My Costco had a sign up limiting sugar, but no sign near the Clorox Wipes. Of course selfish people were snatching up the wipes (it's a 5-page of those large round tubs) like the zombies were beating down the doors. (are wipes even effective against zombies?) So of course there were a lot of people who couldn't get any due to the selfish people. (I was neutral since I was just there for pizza, )

So far here in Southern NH I haven’t seen limits or anything actually sold out except hand sanitizer. There are still many Trumpers in my town buying into his it’s just a cold bullshit.

I haven't read all the responses but I guess it is the best thing to do as of now. These foolish people that are freaking out are making things difficult for the people who are trying to just do a normal weekly grocery run.

If you run out of paper towel you could use rags or towels and wash them quite easily. If you run out of pasta you can eat rice. No one wants to think of what to do if you run out of TP.
