We went to Costco last Tuesday, every cart was stacked with toilet paper and bottled water. DH and I started counting arts that didn’t have any TP.
My guess is many people are confusing prep for quarantine and prep for a hurricane, when the necessities are no longer available. With Amazon we should want for nothing if we were quarantined for 2 weeks.
Now, hoarding chocolate should be priority 1!

The people usually have gloves on and the sample is put in a paper cup or other little type of container and they only put out a few at a time. I believe if someone touches the item, then changes their mind, the employee is told to pitch it. Probably a lot safer than what happens in the kitchen of a restaurant that you can't see.

Samples don't bother me. I'm more disgusted by the hands touching a cone just above the wrapper on an ice cream cone.

I was shocked at the pallet that was almost out of Spam at our Costco. There were a lot of things that were low. When I went on Tuesday they were out of the Kirkland water till 3 pm (according to the signs), but they still had plenty of the expensive stuff - Fiji, Smart Water, etc. I needed to get a thing of TP, because we are a family of 6 and go through it quickly. I almost felt guilty, but I only bought 1.
There was also a line of about 200 people when I got there, 10 minutes before they opened.

So I lived in my home country for about 2 years right after the Sandinistas took over. We had to use a “ coupon book” and they rationed supplies for everything, including TP. I remember each person got two rolls per week and it was super cheap, newsprint type toilet paper. Fast forward to many years later and my entire family still talks about it. We were all traumatized by this toilet paper shortage. So we all became TP hoarders and we all use the softest paper we can find. My GM traveled to Nicaragua with one suitcase full of TP. We each have our own TP.
So, the thought of running out of TP brings back very bad memories. My dining room looks like a TP warehouse. 🤨🤨🤨

I went to Costco today (WA) and the paper towels and TP are all gone. Bottled water is taking the floor space of the paper products and they are limiting those to two per customer. The adult briefs are limited to two as well, but I didn’t see a shortage on much else. The parking lot was only half full though, which for our Costco on a Sunday is astonishing .

DH went to our Costco this morning and there were signs saying "Due to the unfortunate circumstances there is currently a two quantity limit on all merchandise in the warehouse."
He took it kind of literally and bought two of everything on our list. Good news is I probably now have enough tampons to last until menopause. 🤣
(Also - no hand sanitizer to be found in Costco, Walmart, or our grocery store.)

My BFF was at Costco today and there was a lady throwing a fit. It was her fourth trip into the store that day, she had already bought 15 cases of toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning wipes. She was angry because they wouldn’t let her buy more than the 5 per person limit. After she left the cashier told my friend that every time she’d been there today she threw the same fit. At that point she had 20 cases of each thing and still wanted more. Apparently she was the talk of the store. The cashier was hoping the manager would tell her not to come back that day.
That just seems insane to me. WTH would you need all of that stuff for? According to the cashier she had been saying she was preparing for quarantine. I’m guessing for a year or so. 😂

Where does one even store 15 cases of everything. That’s just what they know if from today but I would bet she had more from previous days. Local news showed the lines to get in the buildings of several semi local Costco’s it was crazy they wrapped around the store. I would love to get some water but I don’t want to deal with the crowds.

I can’t remember what my friend said that the woman said, it was like diabetes or something really common that certainly would require case upon case of TP. I can’t imagine the hoard she has. I bought a case of TP and a 6 gallon pack of water when I was at Costco. I also bought a 4 pack of Lysol spray for my niece who teaches 2nd grade. I figured she could spray the desks and handles at the end of the day after the kids leave.

I have to get a huge amount of paper towel. We normally don't use paper towel or napkins. I prefer linen napkins and hand towels, but DH'S oncologist said it would be a good idea to wash hands and use a paper towel, and then throw it out. Makes sense since his tolerance is below 0 now. (I thought I was doing well using thicker white washcloths in the bathrooms and throwing them in the wash after a day. Not good enough now for us all so we have new rules.
Our Publix store had limits on bottled water, soap items, etc! And the shelves were bare. One of the cashiers I know told me that they might cut back on their hours (the workers). Most people are getting items delivered and not going out.

Speak to the store manager, explain your need for paper towels, maybe they will allow you extra or at least let you know when they get delivery or maybe even deliver to you. Or Amazon. Do you have an Aldi? I like theri select-a -size towels.... 12 rolls I think for $10.

So far here in Southern NH I haven’t seen limits or anything actually sold out except hand sanitizer. There are still many Trumpers in my town buying into his it’s just a cold bullshit. I had a friend that went to Walmart in Amherst and said that they were put of all rice, lentils, beans, Clorox wipes... and were low on tp and kleenex. I was in Walmart in Manchester on Friday and while they weren't out of anything except hand sanitizer, they were low on paper towels and Kleenex.

I haven’t even bothered to go to Costco since this all started because of the reports about craziness. One of my colleagues went for dog food and reported that you had to stand in a line to get into the aisle to even access the dog food.
I have six kids, so I miss those big Costco packages, but I am just going to make do with smaller bags of Goldfish instead.

Am I the only person who does not eat the samples at Costco? Im not a total germaphobe, but that just squicks me out. I never do either. It's part that it's prepared in the aisle of the store and part that blocking the aisle annoys me.

Unfortunately amazon sellers and people on Facebook marketplace are reselling TP and the like for ridiculous prices. That could be why a few people have bought so much.

I usually don’t either, but that’s due in part to when we usually shop there which is in the evening after they shut the samples down. DH hates with a fiery passion how the customers crowd around the sample people and clog the ends of the aisles making them barely passable, so we make a point to go when that’s less of an issue. He’s a “git ‘er done” type of shopper and likes to get in, get our stuff and get out again as quickly as possible.

We went to Sam's this weekend for our usual run. I had toilet paper on my list, but they were completely out. I just wanted one pack. They were sold out online as well. I wound up ordering some through Amazon. I think it's stocking up, but I also think it's scalpers. That pisses me off.
ETA: They were giving out samples as usual.

Occasionally if I have time and the store isn’t crowded I will browse more but most of the time I just want to get what I went in for and get out While I can understand it, we miss out on a lot of really good deals that way because he never shops the whole store the way I do when I’m there on my own. When I’m shopping there by myself and take a little more time, I’m able to find all of the “last ones” bargains that they have knocked down the prices to nothing on, and I snap that stuff up. Once it gets really cheap like that, the stuff goes fast and they may never have it in stock again. Case in point, we wanted some hook rails for our lake cabin. I saw them initially when they were $24.99 for a two pack. Didn’t buy them. Was shopping by myself a few weeks later on a Friday and saw they were down to $12.49 and there was a whole pallet of them. I bought three packs (6 rails) and brought them to the cabin, where DH decided we could use 2-3 more packs of them for the basement bath, the guest bedroom and a closet. By the time I got back there on Monday they were marked down to $9 a pack and there were just two packs left out of that whole pallet. I hate missing out on deals for stuff we need to buy anyway.

I am on a decluttering project, and the 3 cases of toilet paper and paper towels in our basement is stressing me out! Then my husband's office is moving in with another company, and he had about 20 rolls of toilet paper for us to take home. I think I will donate it to my daughter's university food pantry.

Why are people stocking up on toilet paper? Maybe the answer is obvious and I just don't see it. We usually go to Sam's Club (no Costco near us) about twice a year and stock up on toilet paper and paper towels and trash bags, etc. I am guilty about using a lot of paper towels but with 3 kids and 4 cats in the house, I need to. If we run out, I just go to the store and get some more before our next Sam's trip. People tend to get the things you can't live without. TP is one of those things. It isn't that the supply of them will be gone as much as knowing that other people are stockpiling them and leaving others without. We have weather alerts for snowstorms frequently for about 6 months out of the year. You can count on people (generally who aren't used to storms) going out and getting all of the eggs, milk, and bread. The joke is that a storm is coming so you better make French toast. The neighboring town the stock up joke is bananas Bananas are now their town symbol, not sure if mascot would be the correct word! But they are pretty funny with the banana jokes, meme and pictures!

We were at Costco for our usual trip at the beginning of the virus. We forgot coffee so dh went back that next Monday and it was right at the beginning of the stockpiling. He got coffee and an extra bag of dog food. No other extras for us, just didn’t want to stand in line or run out of dog food!
