Thank you joblackford . I will look into it for the next time. When I was posting mine on Saturday the lady at the post office said I can save about $3 if I send it in a different box. At that point I didn't want to mess with it. Yeah, it's not worth worrying about $3. I saw your box and I think there were way too many cards for the Regional Rate A box I used - it's a little smaller than the medium flat rate box, good for about 100-125 cards + envelopes probably. The big catch with Regional Rate boxes is that you have to order the boxes and print the postage online, so that might be a deal breaker for some people.  I got a medium box and its so small I couldn't fit all the cards +envelopes so I had a large box and that worked out almost perfectly....I needed 20+ more cards to fit snug. I really enjoyed this card drive, I don't have a lot of chance to make cards for kids .

I'm sending out my 100 cards to Cards for Cubs tomorrow! I had originally only pledged 10 cards but by the time I had sorted through everything and compiled what I could it turned out to be 96!!! I made 4 more to make it an even 100 and I'm so excited! Now I need to find another place since this one ends next week.... That's awesome. I'm sure they'll appreciate them. Hopefully someone can suggest a new drive - I'm not sure if Cards for Hospitalized Kids or any of the other longstanding drives are operating normally during the pandemic.

Just wanted to thank joblackford for starting this thread and for all the wonderful peas who have suggested organizations/drives in need of cards. I have enjoyed making cards for Bring Smiles to Seniors and Cards for Hospitalized Kids in the past year. I recently started making cards for Letters Against Isolation (LAI) and wanted to suggest it to any peas who are looking for a new drive. It's a relatively new organization that was started by 2 sisters last year to help lonely seniors. Volunteers sign up with the organization and are sent a link to a google drive document every 2 weeks that they then use to sign up for sending cards/letters to seniors residents of assisted living facilities and care homes in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Israel. They are always looking for new volunteers and have a pretty active facebook group where volunteers share their creations, ideas for messages and words of encouragement. I have been sending a couple of cards with messages every 2 weeks. Sometimes there are special requests for helping a senior celebrate a milestone birthday and those are fun to design. I have made 3 so far.

Good Morning from Sunny Florida. Last year, my senior neighbor, who volunteered 6 days a week, had a big health downfall. Because of Covid, she wasn't able to volunteer. She literally could not walk and had great difficulty with thought processing. So, I took her to her doctor. Blood work was done. She was deficient in a few nutrients. However, it did not fully explain her condition. After all, she was active, on her feet for a few hours a day, helping other people. I knew I had to do something. After some PT, she is able to walk again.
So, I told her we are going to make cards for resident in nursing homes. She was never a creative or crafty person. Since last year, 2 other ladies have joined our card making venture. We have given out 2500 cards to local nursing homes.
Most of these homes have residents who cannot read a card and have memory issues. Reports from staff have given us great happiness The residents love walking/wheeling around sharing their cards with other residents and staff. One staff person told me she was filled with joy to see residents out of their rooms; sharing their cards. Another staff member, from another facility, told me no one can visit due to COVID. He said the cards are their only link to the outside world. I was in disbelief and tried to grasp the reality of the situation. Now, the residents can share cards with another and show family members. The staff member said they keep their cards on a bulletin boards or on their nightstand. We are an informal group of card makers. 3 out of 4 of us were unexperienced. One is a phenomenal oil artist. She loves the break from painting and often giggles showing us her cards. Another says she saves every scrap. She purchases some supplies at the Dollar Tree and makes her Dollar Item last! The scraps are used for cute cards! My neighbor's thought process is much better. She is my #1 person to correctly line up everything on the cards. Because of our efforts 3 of us were the top voluteers in our city. It was nice to receive an award. Honestly, hearing the stories from the staff is the greatest reward. Having my neighbor back is an even bigger reward. We are not a legal non profit. I don't think I would want to become one. We have flexibility now. We were unable to create Easter cards due to my MIL passing away a few months ago. The facility staff understood. Our cards can look like a pro did them or look like a child did them. We found shortcuts to get us through the Oct-Dec holidays. Thank you for letting us share our story.

I really believe that volunteering to benefit other people helps the giver and the receiver. This sounds like proof. I'm so glad you were able to help your neighbor during this time. I think a lot of seniors felt that there was nothing to live for during the pandemic. It sounds like you saved her life. I've heard that a lot of nursing home residents with memory problems love cards with bright colors and textures and other sensory input. They don't need to be lined up just right or professional looking - anything is a treat, and being able to show off their cards gives them more human interaction... it's just good all around! Thank you for sharing - I'm sure this will encourage a lot of people. I'm ready to go and make more cards right now!!

I hope it encourages people to make cards. One thing we did, which really helped our productivity, is purchase foam shapes. We had spiders, Happy Halloween, witches, Christmas trees, snowpersons, ornaments........you name it. This is something kids can do during the summer months! We purchased from chain stores as well as online. Also, the Dollar Tree has incredibly cheap stickers for cards. Parents can take their children to the store to purchase stickers. Who cares if it's childish. It's coming from a child's heart. People can challenge themselves to make one card a day. Just sit down for a few minutes and do it. One card a day adds up!

Hi all - I just finished up 18 Valentine cards to send out to Bring Smiles to Seniors tomorrow. I'm trying to get back into it after basically a year of moving/organizing!
Anybody working on anything in particular?

Anybody working on anything in particular? Nothing in particular, but it's definitely on my radar. I uncovered a stash of cards I made a few years ago that I would love to see go to good use. I have it marked on my calendar in March to research the different organizations to see where they might be a good fit.

I really enjoyed doing the Bearly Art craft kits for cubs last July. Does anyone know if they do that every year. I have come across more supplies I would love to donate.

I don't know if they will or not. I believe it was one of their designer who organized it. You can always email them. mailto:support@bearly.art I sent them 8 kits, packed with paper, glitter glue, stickers and unwanted pens. It was nice to be able to send them.

I have been working on my Cards for Cubs - my last few IG posts show what I've been making: www.instagram.com/olivemaycards/I'm going to mass produce some stenciled one layer cards and then I might do some more patterned paper cards. I got a "regional rate box A" from the USPS online to fill - I still have lots of space to go. You can't get the boxes in stores but they're free to have delivered. It's a priority mail box but not flat rate - it depends how far away you send it, but for almost everyone it should be cheaper than a medium flat rate box, and it's perfectly sized for A2 cards. IIRC you pay the 2lb rate for up to 15lb and even from Seattle to Texas it's $4 cheaper than med flat rate. If you live closer to TX you'll save even more. I guess I discovered this same thing last year and posted about it here - glad I remembered again this year. (If you can fill a large box I think that's better value but that's a lot of cards! 200?) Is anyone else making progress on Cards for Cubs? We have another month to go.

I'm working on my Cards for Cubs now and am so excited to be doing this one again. Thanks for the tip on the regional box! I have a new one to share that a friend of mine does: www.moreloveletters.comit's encouragement centered for women and my friend has done this one for quite a while. Another one is Cards for Hospitalized Kids, I don't know much about this one but thought I'd pass it on anyway.

I'll check that out although I'm much better at making cards than writing in them. Cards for Hospitalized Kids is a good one too. I've mailed to them before. It's great for general encouragement cards. I managed to fit 130 cards in my Regional Rate Box A. It's pretty jam packed at this point but I think I have room on the side for the last 6 I forgot to mention that the postage for that box has to be bought online too. It's like a secret menu for expert usps.com customers. Very odd.

Card drive for Ukrainian exchange student. I don't know if this one is for cards with messages in them, I would assume so but might need to clarify that. http://instagram.com/p/CbJhY0ML9ab

I asked about the Ukrainian student and they said that a personal card for her with an encouraging message would be great but also happy to receive blank cards she can send on to others. Her name is Jasmine, and she's in high school.

I got word of another charitable card drive if you like making red white and blue patriotic cards 🇺🇸 My friend Kate Deignan has been making cards for Jill to distribute for a couple of years and today I finally got Jill’s info from her. She was happy for me to share the info with you all too, if you’d like to contribute. The guidelines for the RWB drive: Red white and blue designs suitable for kids A2 cards, no envelopes No sentiments on the front or inside (my specialty lol) She will add an internal panel with a specific sentiment and stamp The cards go to a foster care charity for a 9/11 event. She needs this year’s cards by mid-August. Here are some examples from a previous year justjill07.blogspot.com/2020/03/2020-what-crazy-times-we-live-in-think_25.htmlJill is on IG: instagram.com/just_jill_07?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=But she prefers to communicate via email so if you message her there she’ll ask to email you. Probably easier just to email her directly at justjill48@gmail.com I used this as an excuse to buy a bunch of Doodlebug patriotic supplies! I’ll send extra cards with sentiments to Bring Smiles to Seniors if I can get my act together fast enough.

Love this thread, what a great resource. I just did a purge of my cards and have 44 cards to donate. They are a mix of hello, holiday, thank you, birthday and just because. Off to read thru the posts and see who might like to receive them.

I’m re-visiting this thread to plan for next year’s cardmaking, trying to remember who I prefer to make cards for and when I need to work on them.
February-March - Cards for Cubs, foster kids birthday and encouragement June-August - red white & blue no sentiment cards, also for foster kids September-December - holiday cards for various charities, uncertain if Caring Hearts Card Drive is coming back this year Year-round - Bring Smiles to Seniors
Does anyone else contribute to specific seasonal drives?

All my repurposed/upcycled Christmas cards fit Tell me more about this, please. If this is not the right thread, feel free to reply elsewhere and direct me there.... No problem - this is the perfect place to ask. I cut the fronts off any cards I can and glue them to new card bases to donate! I especially like to do it with handmade cards so the crafty energy doesn't go to waste, but I cut up postcards and store bought cards and those free cards you get in the mail from charities too. If the card is bigger than an A2 base I usually cut it with an A2 card die if I can (can't do dimensional ones of course, those I just use my trimmer on) and try to get a nice segment of the design. Pretty basic. You might be able to see some IG highlights of the process here www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18022870099131677/

I think you're saying that if you receive a handmade card, you cut the front off, using it as a card panel, and attach it to a new card to donate.
I'm less clear on how you use store bought and free charity cards in this process -- and I have a multitude of both!
I don't think I have an Insta, but trying to create one is not going well....

I think you're saying that if you receive a handmade care, you cut the front off, using it as a card panel, and attach it to a new card to donate. I'm less clear on how you use store bought and free charity cards in this process -- and I have a multitude of both! I don't think I have an Insta, but trying to create one is not going well.... You might not need an account to view IG if you are on a computer instead of a phone, but I could be wrong. Don’t make an account just for this! I don’t want to enable the Zuck in his world takeover. I can share the photos elsewhere. But yes, I do that with handmade cards, and with any other kinds of cards too, chopping off the written-on part and attaching the fronts to a new card base. Charity freebie cards are usually very flimsy so I like to mount them on a new base just to make them feel less cheap. Sometimes it means cutting off part of the store bought design to make it fit onto an A2 card base (I prefer that size so I can get 2 cards out of a sheet of cards without waste, and it’s the only size of envelope I always have around). Using an A2 card front die makes it easier to visualize what will make a good design if you have to chop a big section off a card to make it A2. But I should also mention that Bring Smiles to Seniors is happy to have store bought cards donated to them as well as handmade cards. So if the card is perfectly nice you could just donate it as is, or if it’s already written in you could make a panel to cover up the writing. They are the least fussy charity IMO.

Aha! First, I can't believe that I didn't notice that you replied again. I did make an Insta account and was coming back with more questions...which are answered in your last post, which I had missed until now. Sigh.
The piece of information I was missing is that not all charities are looking for handmade cards.
Is there a summary anywhere in this thread of who takes what in those kinds of general terms? Cards for Kindness wants only handmade, Bring Smiles to Senior takes any usable card...I'm guessing all the others range somewhere between those extremes.

I'm looking at the card guidelines for Bring Smiles to Seniors...it says store bought or hand made. Has anyone tried sending the free charity cards to them as is?
I've been holding on to some of these for years, thinking I'd use them to make other things. The idea that I could just let them go and they'd get used is freeing and a little exciting!

I'm pretty sure I've sent some to them. I would just go ahead and do it. I'm sure they'll make use of them. I don't think there's any one spot where there's a guide to who takes what, mostly because the charities change their guidelines. This page at Jess Crafts is probably the closest thing I've found (with the caveat that it's best to check each site you think you'll donate to for the finer details of what they can't accept). jesscrafts.com/card-drive-resources/where-to-donate/I find it easiest to donate to Bring Smiles to Seniors because they take almost everything, and I have emailed them with questions and gotten quick responses.

I DID reach out to them, and they did indeed get back to me promptly! Turns out most of my charity cards are blank. They'll take them as is but would be happier if I stamped thinking of you/happy hello type messages inside them.
I'm really happy! So glad I found this community.
