Russia’s President Vladimir Putin took no chances this week when he visited coronavirus patients in a Moscow hospital, sporting a full hazmat suit and breathing mask to protect himself from the bug. A lady I work with is Russian, she lived there until she was 30yo... she said she'd bet her last dollar that it wasn't Putin in the suit when he actually went into the ward. Interesting...

This is the entire problem with this piecemeal response. You get governors who lack the backbone to do the right thing because they are listening to the wrong people, or are not listening to anyone at all. My husband is immune-compromised. Because his employer refuses to shut down unless the governor tells them to, off to work he goes everyday. His job is not essential. He can’t apply for unemployment until they shut down, so we are screwed. So the federal governments response on this, angers me on a personal level. I have no idea why the governor has not shut non-essential in the state down. No, we don’t have a lot of cases - yet (although I guarantee you the real asymptomatic numbers are much higher) but as one of the least populous state we have MUCH less margin for error (i.e ICU hospital beds) if things go to hell. That was the concern my husbands doctor voiced yesterday. Most nurses will tell you hospitals in the city get overwhelmed at times already, without a pandemic. Almost all major hospitals are located in five cities (I mean ICU beds wise) - they have to serve the entire state.

In Finland the closure of the capital reagion started last night. There are barricades on the streets. Police (with the help of the army) are stopping everyone leaving or arriving to the region. Only those with valid reasons are allowed through. Police is also monitoring busses and trains. Because a lot of the border is sea, they are patrolling there as well. Wild is the only word I can think. I am now officially not allowed to see my family. I'm fine for now -even if this was happening, I wouldn't have seen them for few months. But I can't help to worry about how long this is going to last.

But I can't help to worry about how long this is going to last. Me too. I think it's going to be longer than first thought. I read an interesting article this morning about the way life will be a year...two years from now...I'll try and find it.

Fascinating. Thanks, @gar! "We are going to be spending half a year socialising people to the idea that, when there is a social necessity, it is not a moral hazard to pay people without expecting work in return,” says Nusbacher. “This is an ethical change.” A universal basic income, which has been trialled in Finland and Canada to mixed results, could demolish the working class. Instead of their value to the economy being calculated by how much they produce, it would be based on their consumption – the way in which they spend the money given to them by the government." The way it should always have been. People have worth before, after and while they are "productive".

I love reading Mitchell. He's like the harbinger of all the f#$*(foolery about to come out of the "work is more important than lives" nutters.

Update from France:
- Confinement prolonged until mid-April but the government has already warned the public it will likely be a full six weeks. - 1 billion masks order has been placed (population: 67 million) - Daily testing is FINALLY getting ramped up. We are doing 12 000 tests daily right now but the aim is to reach 20 000 tests daily next week, 50 000 by the end of April and 100 000 in June. Yep, if you thought this thing was going to blow over, it isn't. Governments in Europe are already preparing for the Covid-19 summer. - 10 000 beds in reanimation in the country, several regions have reached maximum capacity. In contrast, Germany with a similar population in size have 25 000. The government is working on having 14 000 - 14 500 beds available in total in April. - Operation Résilience has begun: the French army is exporting some patients to other European nations that are currently less affected. The aim is to export some patients until the situation stabilises over here and then to import patients when the Covid-19 crisis hits other European countries harder in a few weeks' time. They are using medical helicopters to fly to German hospitals right now. - Our PM warns that the fight has only begun. We are a couple of weeks behind Italy but on the same curve. We are now entering what it is being called the "three week peak period." The next three weeks will likely be the hardest. If people aren't applying the rules of confinement properly, it could stretch out and become even worse. - Several essential industries are threatening to use their "droit de retrait" AKA right to withdraw if they aren't given the right equipment and work circumstances, like postal workers not having enough masks or gloves, truckers unable to relieve themselves or shower because of closed stops, etc. This is typical procedure in France and should put enough pressure on the government to prioritise these issues ASAP. Hopefully. - The Paris fashion week in June is cancelled. - French luxury group LVMH which you likely know from Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Fendi, Céline, Sephora, De Beers, Givenchy, etc. have already started using their perfume facilities in France to make hand sanitiser and have just announced they are starting production on masks and cotton scrubs for medical workers using government-approved prototypes next week. - Over 250 000 fines have already been handed out for violation of confinement rules. Shame on them.

It took the US one month to go from 1 to 1037 deaths (on March 26th).
It has taken us 2 days to go from 1037 to 2227.
That is what exponential growth looks like.

My husband's coworker is supposedly still going through with the plan to fly his family from Houston to Florida to visit relatives. Because airfare is so cheap right now. The guy and his wife don't "buy into the hype" so they don't have any worries about it. Most of the guys in his department think that it's mostly about hysteria and aren't taking it seriously. These are the guys who had a tailgate party in the parking lot of a sandwich shop to protest restaurant dining rooms being closed. They don't know anyone who is sick, so how can it be the big deal the mainstream media is making it out to be?
I don't know what it would take to get them to take it seriously. One of their wives is a nurse in a hospital. I'm thinking that's going to go really bad in the not too distant future and that might be their wakeup call.

How many more days before people get it? GAH. It drives me nuts as someone in a country a few weeks ahead. You have a hecatomb on your hands. You are the next Italy and Spain. I feel completely useless. Europe is Cassandra desperately trying to warn you (leadership, "it's overblown!"-ers) about the tragedy on your doorstep.

We are evacuating Covid-19 patients left and right here. To wherever in France there are still some beds in reanimation and ventilators available. To other countries! This is not a drill, this is happening. Helicopters, planes and even bullet trains are being hastily transformed to become moving medical units to transport these patients. If you're still on the fence, take this virus seriously and #STAYATHOME! ETA: These are not road accident victims. These are Covid-19 patients being handed over for the next part of their trip. ETA2: Two patients leaving for Germany by medical helicopter:

Did they listen to their leader tonight, who has now said social distancing until at least April 30th. He said as bad as it is, it is good that ONLY 100,000 will die!

About those tests, that supposedly anyone who needs one can get, those beautiful tests, the best in the WORLD, those tests that the US is doing more of than any other country in the world...
Well, let me tell you a quick story.
One of my coworkers texted us all this morning and asked us to keep her sister, who is a nurse in a hospital, in our prayers because she is sick and has been exposed to the virus. She was tested today.
I just texted her a few minutes ago to ask her how her sister is doing, and she said she is doing okay, and that she and her family are quarantining until she gets the test results. I asked her when she would get the results, and get ready for this!
Because of the backlog, 8-10 DAYS. To get the test results!!!
And we live in an area that is not all that crazy with the virus yet. The cases are increasing, but we are not considered a hot spot or anything like that.
I just can't believe this. How in the heck will we ever get a grip on this???
I'm so angry right now. Our government has f*cked this up so bad, and I am truly scared right now.

US view: This map is a huge eye opener for me. I'm in ND, second lowest after SD. I wonder why...and what the heck is happening in Michigan? And Wyoming is reporting fewer cases than both the Dakotas, so you would be 3rd lowest, if the map is at all accurate. Due to the issues with lack of tests and testing, it is impossible to know exactly what is going on in which states. I might guess that the U of M hospital system, which is amazing and people (including me) travel to from around the country for treatment, have somehow gotten their hands on tests. I think that the actual number of cases is exponentially higher in ALL of the states, but we have no idea what the accurate numbers are due to the lack of tests and the length of time it takes for test results to come back. Personally, I think that DC, Maryland and Virginia should all be MUCH higher, if mass testing was actually going on, due to the numbers of people/politicians/lobbyists/tourists who travel here from around the country and around the world. When testing becomes more commonplace, I’m sure all of our numbers will rise.
