Here's your happy news from France tonight: two presidents of region (Grand-Est, the east of France which is the national epicentre right now, and PACA, the south-east where I live) have denounced that Americans are snapping up mask orders at the Chinese airport they were departing from. Apparently, there's some wild wild west negotiating happening from American representatives in China right now. Per these elected officials, they are offering up to 3-4 times the price originally negotiated to get their hands on these ready-to-go deliveries just before they are on their way out to their destination countries. And now, several millions of masks won't get delivered to France in the next few days just as our peak is expected to take place. They're pretty upset. They were meant for essential workers, including public hospital personnel. Yah, make of that what you will. When you say "the Americans", do you mean the federal government or private entities? Not that it's right either way. I'm sorry that resources are being abused in this way. We don't know. It was brought up as they explained how relieved they were to see a plane filled with equipment from China land in France last night after another plane that was meant to fly over ordered masks had suddenly changed route to the US after it had been loaded at the airport in China. No extra details. My guess is that this is being discussed through diplomacy and if these wild wild west practices continue, more information will be leaked to the press over here. Hopefully, it's not being encouraged by the federal government but with King Flamin' Hot Cheeto, anything (but good) seems possible... It is currently the most read article on reputable newspaper Libération's website. Yikes. From the article:

It's just a very sad and historical situation (amplified by the historical pandemic).

This just in: a study led by two doctors in Mons, Belgium on 417 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and having mild Covid-19 symptoms confirms that loss of smell and taste are symptoms of Covid-19. 86% experienced smell issues (most of them completely losing the sense of smell), 88% experienced taste issues.
If there ever was a reason to #STAYATHOME and avoid contracting the virus... (no, seriously, I don't want to be without the fun of tasting chocolate)

Honestly, one of the hardest things about chemotherapy for me was completely losing my sense of taste for 4.5 months. It is *very* hard to eat anything when it all tastes like tasteless cardboard. I ended up living on soup and smoothies because I didn’t have to hold them in my mouth and chew. Drinking things is the only way to cope with no sense of taste. It is really no fun at all!

Chris Cuomo discusses his Covid-19 symptoms. The shivers were so bad he chipped a tooth! Stay safe, stay at home, everyone.

Oops.......... Let us see who shows up and how the Covid briefing goes today!! Members of a White House coronavirus task force were ordered to work from home after one person’s partner tested positive for the virus, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in an email to staff. The email, first obtained by NBC News, said all staff on the supply chain sub task force who worked on a certain floor of a FEMA building in Washington, D.C., are required to telework starting Tuesday. The person, described by FEMA as a “partner” who is a federal employee, visited FEMA headquarters in Washington. A FEMA spokesperson told The Hill that "at no time" did the person who tested positive "or any other known to have contact with them, come within six feet of any other Task Force principal for a prolonged period of time." ** thehill.com/homenews/administration/491569-white-house-coronavirus-unit-ordered-to-work-from-home-after-positiveIf they can't work in the WH, how can they BE in the WH?

"The mental image many people have of the Los Angeles skyline is one obscured by smog, with thick air pollution hanging over its downtown buildings. But with the city — and the entire state of California — under stay-at-home orders to stem the deadly outbreak of coronavirus, something dramatic has happened to the air in LA. On Tuesday, LA saw some of the cleanest air of any major city in the world, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company which also monitors pollution levels in cities around the globe. And beginning in early March of this year, EPA air quality data shows that the city of Angels experienced its longest stretch of “good” air quality since at least 1995. Dr. Yifang Zhu, a professor of environmental health sciences at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, said that she and her colleagues identified a similar trend. Between March 16 — three days before California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state’s 40 million residents to stay home — and April 6, Zhu’s team found there was a 20% improvement in overall air quality in Southern California. Zhu’s team also found a 40% drop in levels of PM 2.5, a class of microscopic air pollutants that have been linked to serious cardiovascular and respiratory problems, especially in children and the elderly. A study released Monday, by Xiao Wu and Rachel C. Nethery of Harvard University, also linked exposure to PM 2.5 to an increased risk of death from Covid-19. PM 2.5 ends up in our air from many sources, but Zhu said vehicle traffic is a big contributor in Southern California. Since California’s stay-at-home order went into effect, Zhu’s team has found that traffic across the state has fallen by around 80%.The massive drop — in one of the most traffic-choked states in the country — is likely a big reason for the cleaner air. “With less cars on the road and less emissions coming from those tailpipes, it’s not surprising to see improvements in the air quality overall,” Zhu said." www.mercurynews.com/2020/04/07/coronavirus-las-air-usually-terrible-is-best-in-the-world/

"Russia’s much-feared coronavirus crisis is here — and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.... His pessimism is warranted. Hospitals have become overrun with patients, leaving ambulances stuck idling in long lines outside hospitals just to deliver sick patients. At least one driver had to wait about 15 hours. Moscow might run out of intensive care unit beds before the end of this week. And nurses have quit en masse to protest poor working conditions and low pay. Millions of Russians could lose their jobs this year due to the lockdown and oil revenues, which make up a significant portion of Russia’s economy, have dropped sharply as people around the world have stopped traveling and business have shuttered due to the coronavirus.... Over a dozen members of the nursing staff from Kommunarka hospital, the top coronavirus facility in Moscow, abruptly quit together on Monday because they didn’t have enough protective gear, food to eat, or some of the $132 million in bonuses Putin promised the nation’s physicians." Like Trump, Putin can't gaslight this. "The problem for him, and the millions of Russians counting on his leadership, is that when it comes to fighting the coronavirus, macho posturing and disinformation just don’t cut it.
