Italy has just instituted nationwide travel restrictions. You will not be allowed out of the area in which you live unless you meet several defined (and fairly strict) requirements. Bars and nighttime entertainment must close at dusk. Schools are closed until April 3. How awful to be the prime minister of a country and have to make decisions like this that will affect people's lives for years. I'm telling DH that we probably have no more than two weeks left here in our area before we see draconian measures being taken as well. I hope I am wrong, but this is spreading so fast. What I don't understand is why such different reaction from one country to the next? Why are some countries acting like this is really dier and shutting down their countries and our government is acting like it's no big deal? Why, why, what do they know that we don't? Most countries have the welfare of their citizens as their highest priority.

😔 Here is hoping the peak is over in Korea, I am due to have bladder surgery and just got a message they are postponing indefinitely all non-essential procedures at the hospital, apparently they have been for a while but I only just scheduled mine and I guess because international patient clinic they didn’t get the info out. I NEED this surgery so I can file for divorce- I lose my health insurance once it’s final. I was thinking of doing my knees too before the divorce is final but this is pushing everything back for who knows how long...
@bergdorfblonde, you are in my thoughts a whole lot, it’s just too much. My youngest has mental health challenges too and I worry so, so much about her future now that her parents are getting divorced. Thinking of your DH fighting cancer, and sending the best of intentions out into the world for you guys.

I think that China and Italy have seen the impact for longer. The US is really only at the beginning of this, or at least that is how it looks to me. Both seen to realise that once in the community it is hard to control and the health resources like hospital beds, ventilators etc are under huge pressure as the numbers grow too quickly to cope. China built a new hospital in ten days to deal. China quarantined cities etc , Italy has decided that to quarantine the whole country, drastic but with the deaths raising daily I guess they decided they didn't have the luxury of time.

A local assisted living facility just initiated a no visitor/ isolation policy and Ohio State University - one of the biggest in the country- just moved all classes to online instruction through at least the end of the month.

I just wrote this in another thread, but my son is a senior at OSU. He is a music performance major, and his senior recital scheduled for April 1st is a requirement for graduation. He's playing with two of his chamber groups in it. He also has band, lessons and another chamber group that are all part of his coursework. I have no idea if they will hold the graduation on May 1.

elaine , zella and @bergdorfblonde I understand your anxiety. I am right there with you! We now have 19 cases here in Pennsylvania. One is a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He works out of the King of Prussia medical and surgical center. He is at UPenn Hospital in critical condition. A month ago I made an appointment for my son who is at high-risk of getting coronavirus (immuno suppressed) at the King of Prussia location for some tests. We chose this location to try to avoid coming in contact with so many people. His tests are scheduled for tomorrow. When they called me tonight to remind me of the appointment; I asked them how it was being handled with the infected doctor. They said that anyone who was working with him or came in contact with him at the center is on Self Quarantine and the entire facility has been completely disinfected. They are continually disinfecting the facility because of the coronavirus. I was going to have my son wear gloves and mask to the appointments. But they told me just to have him wash his hands. There are a couple of people in my county who were in contact with the doctor or at the facility the same time he was. My husband works not far from there, not that he would come in contact with the doctor, but has anyone from his work done so? Chances are they didn't, but it's still getting scarier and scarier. One of the teachers at our local elementary school was at the facility. She did not come in contact with the doctor, but whose to say she didn't touch something that he did? All they are doing at this point is cleaning the school and she is not in quarantine because she isn't showing symptoms. I'm immuno suppressed, so I am keeping a close eye on this. I am not panicking by any means, but I am not going to be going out to public places right now, if I don't need to be.

Except that you can still spread the virus while not showing symptoms. The overrun of the hospitals which is inevitable at this point means that we will have more deaths that could have been avoided. Even the younger people that get it have serious issues that need medical attention.
A new study which hasn't been peer reviewed yet, says that about the 10th day after you started showing symptoms from a mild case is when you are finally not contagious.
destined2bmom, hope the appointment goes well today. My prayers are with you and your family.

destined2bmom , hope the appointment goes well today. My prayers are with you and your family. I know! I'm surprised the school isn't doing more. They didn't even close down today, only spent the evening disinfecting. I'm just thankful my boys go to a virtual charter school and I don't have to worry about things like this. Another one who was in contact with that doctor is a student from another district. He and his family are in quarantine and the school closed today to disinfect the entire building.

I am hoping and praying that our employee that just returned from a cruise does not have it. She came back to work yesterday and called in sick today with flu like symptoms. She is going to the Dr. but I wonder if they will even have the test kit to test her for the virus. There are 33 employees here, one with cancer. She is calling me today after her appointment.

My sons special needs preschool just closed, and while I am able to care for him, I feel bad that other parents might not be able to without repercussions. They can disinfect the schools all they want, but can’t stop little kids from touching things. Even if the school is completely cleaned , if someone sends a sick kid in, well then it’s back to square one. In my sons class they are all either visually impaired or blind, so all of them use their sense of touch, all day long. I’m just waiting to see how long they will close, and how they will handle therapy services that they get in school. There has been no official word from the IU who runs the preschool, I only know because the teacher texted me. She said she has no idea what’s going on. The bus company had no clue school was even closed today, glad I called to let them know. My boys also have appointments at Chop Kop both Wednesday and Thursday, I have heard nothing about our appointments. I will still be going as I am not worried. We will just wash our hands before and after.

If you are in the same county as I you know Poloncarz will have a nice presser in his windbreaker along the "front lines" - probably Roswell or ECMC.

We went from 2 diagnosed cases in NC to 7 last night. 5 people from one company were at a conference in Boston 2 weeks ago and tested positive yesterday. This is in my local area.
Wonder how many people they’ve interacted with in the past two weeks? And one person was here on business from Indiana with active symptoms. I expect numbers here to start dramatically increasing.

My adult child with autism is going to the local university.. taking one class at a time.. because she bombed out 10 yrs ago, she has to take 4 classes and get As to get readmitted.. so right now, we have to pay $1000 a class. she is in the middle of her second class and has done a great job.. misses one question on each test. she does not do well in online classes.. and teaching japanese writing/language--how is that going to work? it if going to be tough for her.. she does well with routine and this is not routine. they had to cancel the final last semester due to bomb threat..

You just have to read the thread where people are not cancelling traveling plans. The virus is here, whether people are showing symptoms or not, so it's going to spread like crazy during this busy travel season coming over the next few weeks here. It's just going to take one confirmed case from someone who recently visited somewhere like Disney World. How do you contain that, let alone let every person who visited during that time know they may have been in contact with? From how they traveled to hotel to where they ate, to where in the park they visited, rides, etc...it's going to spread like crazy over spring breaks in the US.

Having not read this entire thread but just the last couple, I don't think this is a repost BUT my YDS is in the Navy. I am still in the boot camp FB group. They posted yesterday that the upcoming graduations will not be allowed to have the guests and families there. This just hit home to me. Mine graduated in July 2017 and it was a huge booster to us and to him for us to be there. AND to see him. I just keep thinking of all that these sailors have gone through and to walk through those doors to an empty center. My DD works at a university in AL in the sports dept. She said they are doing a lot of monitoring on the ins and outs of travel. They have a lot of international athletes and they are being monitored on movement and when they have to meet deadlines. But no hint of closure has come down the pike yet.
I am in Arkansas and I think, at this point, we have had no cases. A lady I work with just told me her son told her about a clinic that just closed. Someone was sick and sent to that clinic with some symptoms and was tested. I haven't heard anything on the outcome.

My DD's high school orchestra is on the way to Disneyland this week (I think). DD is not going because she's a freshman and didn't get to fundraise for two years, and I never went to the meetings but that's my fault. If she was going I'd seriously be reconsidering or dousing her in hand sanitizer...
Our Spring Break is at the end of the month.

crimsoncat05 I know. The Chinese doctor who discovered it was only 34 when he passed; but he was working with Coronavirus patients all day. I feel sorry for all of the sick kids who the pediatric cardiologist saw and exposed to it. He also went and spoke to some school and they had to shut down the school and some other schools in the school district; for fear of people coming down with it and spreading it. So they have been disinfecting the schools. This is getting to close to home. Although NJ has our first death, 69 yr old male with several other medical issues.

Italy is reporting that while it's more deadly for the elderly, many younger people are getting really serious pneumonias and can also need ventilators, etc. --they have also reported that they're going to have to decide--mostly by age--who gets the ventilators as time goes on as they don't have enough. That's one reason why I don't understand how people just assume they're going to get a mild case. People can get really, really sick from this. Bold mine. This will happen here too. And they bitched about the ACA death squads... What will we do when CMS denies Medicare and Medicaid authorizations for treatment v private payers. Let the elderly and medically fragile go...... Thanks dt!

Why is Italy’s death toll so high compared to the number of cases? Assuming all numbers were reported accurately... is it because they have an older population? This is all so sad.

Somewhat older population and, by all accounts, their health system has been completely overwhelmed. People who need ventilators, for example, but there aren't any available.
