Italian death total jumps again The official number of fatalities from the coronavirus outbreak in Italy has risen from 463 to 631 in 24 hours. That's a scary number...

Why is Italy’s death toll so high compared to the number of cases? Assuming all numbers were reported accurately... is it because they have an older population? This is all so sad. Somewhat older population and, by all accounts, their health system has been completely overwhelmed. People who need ventilators, for example, but there aren't any available. This whole ventilator issue has me more worried than anything else right now. I find myself wishing today that IF I am going to get the Coronavirus that I get it earlier, rather than later, before our healthcare system is overwhelmed and crippled. And that I am thinking along those lines makes me anxious.

elaine , zella and @bergdorfblonde I understand your anxiety. I am right there with you! We now have 19 cases here in Pennsylvania. One is a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He works out of the King of Prussia medical and surgical center. He is at UPenn Hospital in critical condition. A month ago I made an appointment for my son who is at high-risk of getting coronavirus (immuno suppressed) at the King of Prussia location for some tests. We chose this location to try to avoid coming in contact with so many people. His tests are scheduled for tomorrow. When they called me tonight to remind me of the appointment; I asked them how it was being handled with the infected doctor. They said that anyone who was working with him or came in contact with him at the center is on Self Quarantine and the entire facility has been completely disinfected. They are continually disinfecting the facility because of the coronavirus. I was going to have my son wear gloves and mask to the appointments. But they told me just to have him wash his hands. elaine : you are so sweet. Thank you so much. Sounds good to us!!! destined2bmom: oh gosh, that's worry some. DH only wears a mask when we go to Moffitt. Gloves would be a good idea. They check patients as soon as they arrive to see if they need a COVID-19 test, and each patient is pretty segregated. Still, every time we go out,I worry for him,and today is a crappy day for him (slight fever, chills...). I'm monitoring him and in contact with his team. My brother worked at CHOP and he lives and works close to King of Prussia. That's scary. I hope that your son geta good care. Keep as healthy as you could. Hugs to you.

Fairfax County Public Schools - our 187,000 student/200 schools school district here in NoVA - just sent out an email telling us that Monday the schools will all be closed - a “student holiday” - while the staff and administration decide what steps to take next.

😔 Here is hoping the peak is over in Korea, I am due to have bladder surgery and just got a message they are postponing indefinitely all non-essential procedures at the hospital, apparently they have been for a while but I only just scheduled mine and I guess because international patient clinic they didn’t get the info out. I NEED this surgery so I can file for divorce- I lose my health insurance once it’s final. I was thinking of doing my knees too before the divorce is final but this is pushing everything back for who knows how long... @bergdorfblonde , you are in my thoughts a whole lot, it’s just too much. My youngest has mental health challenges too and I worry so, so much about her future now that her parents are getting divorced. Thinking of your DH fighting cancer, and sending the best of intentions out into the world for you guys. I'm so sorry that you lose your health insurance after your divorce. That's terrible that it can't be provided to you if you have it now. I pray that you can get your surgery and be safe.

I am trying to not panic, but I am scared! I have elderly parents on both sides, two family members with Cystic Fibrosis and I have asthma. Whenever I get sick it goes straight to my lungs and takes weeks to recover. I have three young children that bring home germs all the time. We got both Flu this year and I was extremely sick and thought I would end up hospitalized.
I know the family members will not make it if they get this virus. It pains me to type this.
I honestly believe we are not being told the truth so we won't panic.
I went to Sams today and stocked up, I am PRAYING I am wrong about this but I fear it is much worse then it is. I fear my family members that are medical professionals and how they will cope.

In your daily dispatch from the Seattle front lines
I had my first synchronous online class via Zoom today and it was fine. I definitely need to work on toggling back and forth between video and slides/internet/etc., but for those of you who are yourselves facing either teaching or learning online, it wasn't as bad as I feared.
Our governor had a press conference today in which he was serious, curt, and referring a lot to his emergency powers. I would not be surprised if you see a lot of state health department suggestions here becoming mandatory in the next week. Our school district (my kids are at Seattle public schools) sends daily emails and has really pretty much pledged not to close unless forced to, so we will see how that plays out.

There will not be enough hospital beds and surely not enough ventilators! Hospitalised Covid patients are long term patients. As time passes it gets progressively worse ..

On FB a woman in one of my groups lives in Milan. She said they have so many sick people the health system is overwhelmed and so many are in need of ventilators that they are having to make decisions on whom to let die. It scares me. I'm not panicking because there's nothing I can do, but I'm definitely on edge.

I’ve just listened to the BBC saying that in Italy there has been a lot of transmission within families and Italy does have a large elderly population. But Italy’s health care system is an advanced one, not some 3rd world situation, so certainly all similar first world systems will be unbelievably stretched.

I made 3 bottles of hand sanitizer. I had an Avon aloe gel and rubbing alcohol 95%. It’s drying on my hands but I have lotion I can use at home. I made the quantity 75/25 alcohol/gel. If it helps that’s all that matters.

This is crazy and concerning. Viruses spread and kill exponentially. This trend will continue until the epidemic peaks in Italy and every country currently afflicted. I have also read that Italy has had less testing. Only more obvious cases have been tested, meaning a lot of mild cases or those that are asymptomatic have not been counted. It doesn't necessarily mean a higher mortality percentage.

They just closed a lot of college campuses around us. (There were 3 confirmed cases in the county next to ya)
Hubby informed me that his friends wife was in contact with one of the three that were confirmed, and that her employer shut down. My hubby has been in close proximity to his friend 2 weeks ago..but I told him I think those whom the wife was in contact with just happened in the last week.
It’s getting closer.
And because of the colleges closing and going to online classes, the fruit loop trumpers are all over Facebook with their “hoax” gaslighting. 🙄
