I think it’s crazy how some are closed for three weeks and the next county over isn’t closing at all. We have had one death in our county and 6 confirmed cases. We live in a heavily populated elderly community (snow birds). Our district just sent out an email saying they have zero plans to close. We are out this week for spring break and school will be open on Monday.

Schools here are starting to close and combining it with spring break. Many schools here go on spring break in the next two weeks or so, and the closures are lasting about two-three weeks. Kids are getting an extra week off. Some schools are going to online teaching too. My friend is a teacher and they are spending today instructing their kids how to go online and do the assignments.

Our district is following the guideline of the county health department and not closing. However, since faster and widespread testing has now become available I am certain that it will change next week for our district and many others. Once the numbers start getting confirmed they will have no choice.

Oklahoma public schools are on spring break starting today and ending on the 20th. So the kids would go back to school on the 23. I guess we will see what things look like then.

San Diego as well. I'm between LA & SD and would be really surprised if we don't get that same communication by end of day.

Our district told us they're staying open. This is the 3rd largest district in Wisconsin. They also won't do online school because our disadvantaged students don't all have computers. So if we shut down, we shut down with no online, and the missed days would have to be made up. Gah.

Our district hasn't officially closed but I expect it. The feeder schools are closed, which means our students will likely stay home to care for little brothers and sisters. Our super did say that they have started making plans for closures of a day, a week, a month or the rest of the year, so it's definitely a possibility.
Before we left on break last week I had a student ask if I thought we would be closing due to the virus. I told him I would say the odds were 50/50 or better based on what I knew so far. He thought I was crazy.

Yes, because once the teachers start getting sick there won't be a choice no matter how stubborn the administration.

Yes, because once the teachers start getting sick there won't be a choice no matter how stubborn the administration. This. Subs are already scarce in many districts. Does anyone think they're going to be lined up to teach in schools with confirmed cases of the virus?

Yes, because once the teachers start getting sick there won't be a choice no matter how stubborn the administration. Exactly. Even if kids aren’t as prone to getting as sick with this virus, we need to protect all of our educators and school staff. We can’t afford to lose any of them.

I think schools all over the world will end up closing. Apart from possibly Finnish Lapland and the Falklands.

Ours are still open (SW Washington) but I don't expect that to last long... teachers, paras, office staff, custodians, lunch ladies, bus drivers... Yeah, the kids are not getting it, but what about the adults in all the buildings.
ETA: my neighborhood elementary has 450 kids and 70 teachers and staff. I have no idea about the middle and high school numbers.

I’m in Tumwater and we haven’t received any school closure notifications for our district, but the Olympia school district right next door is closed until further notice. I think it will take the governor shutting all the schools down for it to happen here.

Our principal said today the he thought it would happen at some point. We only have 2 confirmed cases in our state but the government is going into a temporary shut down next week and one of the largest school districts wants to close for a few weeks. We can get a waiver so the days don't have to be made up. In my state we have a statute that states that we can't go to school past June 30th.

And good, I’m glad they made the right decision.

I seriously thought about not sending my kids today but we have a teacher conference this afternoon and Fridays are spelling tests etc.

We are in Silicon Valley and got notice that we are closed for the next two weeks. Today was an already scheduled Teacher Work Day. They are spending today, mon, tues getting the online learning portals and work set up. The kids will be expected to log in and do online learning from next Wednesday on. We have Spring Break the week before Easter. I doubt we will end up going back for that week before Spring Break. My guess is that we will go back April 14th at the earliest. I think once testing ramps up there will be even more confirmed cases in our area since we are such a travel/work hub and parents routinely travel all over the world.
I think that most places will end up closing schools for a period of time. I think that most things will end up closed. Anything at this point that we can do to slow the spread. I believe by the end most if not all people are going to end up being exposed and we are going to see a lot more deaths before this is over. But if we can slow transmission we will give doctors and hospitals a fighting chance to save as many people as possible.

I'll tell you what, all of the closures in advance of any confirmed cases makes me believe this is much, much worse than we realize - and that authorities know it. How many thousands of undiagnosed cases are out walking around because we don't have tests for them? *adjusts tinfoil hat*
