Bread was hard to find here at first but now it is fairly easy to find. You can't always get your favorite. I checked today in my store when I went in for my husband's prescription. There were plenty of choices. Gluten free bread was another story. I found one kind in the freezer section. It's the brand I prefer, but a different variety. I bought half of what was left on the shelf; two loaves! I might have to ask dillydally for the recipe she bakes for her husband! Yeast I have! I've been making this bread: Bob's Red Mill GF Sandwich bread. I didn't have potato flour the first time I did it, so I just added another T of the GF flour and it seemed fine so I haven't bothered to go buy any. Also, I use 3 eggs - it isn't quite 3/4c like the recipe swears is necessary. After about 2 days I slice the loaf and pop it in the freezer and he pulls it out of there to make his sandwiches. I did make the mistake of using my mixer with the regular beaters instead of the bread hooks the first time I tried the bread - that was a bit messy and it wound all up the beaters! Luckily, I remembered I had bread hooks (which I obviously had never used since it wasn't my first inclination to pull them out) and the next time was much cleaner.

All you bread bakers, can you tell me if I can use regular all purpose flour for bread if I add gluten? I was able to get Bob’s Red Mill gluten, but can’t find bread flour. Someone in a fb breadmaking group said she makes her own bread flour by mixing vital wheat gluten with all purpose flour. She didn't mention the ratio though.

My Mom will not stop baking bread. lol hey are so good too! She's done a bunch. I really don't bake my own bread but I have. Bread, pizza dough, etc. Working with yeast is not rocket science. I don't know why you say it's hard for people to bake bread..? Its one of the easiest things to make!

For most breads you can use all purpose interchangeably without adding anything to it. I make most of my bread with all purpose flour. I used bread flour today, but only because I had bought some before this all started to make sourdough bread

I haven't used bread flour in many years, mostly because I wanted to store fewer ingredients. I've never had any issues with regular unbleached flour. You could add in a teaspoon or two of the gluten if you want, but I'm not sure it's necessary. Amish White Bread - this is a pretty fool proof recipe and works fine with regular flour. It is sweet so you might want to use half of the sugar.

Me... I haven’t baked in a while but I’m starting to now. I have a couple friends who are on the lookout for flour and yeast for each other. Earlier today - King Arthur had yeast in stock. Check out your local bakeries. I bought yeast and flour from a local bakery today. Much cheaper than having it shipped and they will bring it outside to your car. Thanks for the tip about King Arthur. I got on the site today and ordered some yeast and several different specialty flours for my husband. They will be perfect for his Easter basket. He likes to bake.

I have always baked cinnamon rolls, english muffins & bread.
I'm so glad I had plenty of yeast & flour on hand before this all went south!

I live in a REALLY small town and last week, even at 3 stores, 30 miles away, could not find yeast. A couple days later a friend posted a picture on facebook of some bread her daughter made, and I commented on it saying I could not find yeast anywhere. A few days later, dh's phone rings and then he hangs up and says "Did you find yeast? The Napa Auto Parts guy is on his way here and has some for you". (We have a farm so they deliver parts a few times a week and inventory the shop and bring whatever we are low on). So I am kinda freaked out (never met the guy) and am wondering how he knew I needed yeast! Come to find out his wife had seen my comment on my friends FB post (who she is friends with) and then while grocery shopping found yeast, bought it for me, and sent it with her husband.

I'm baking bread, but I haven't bought yeast, because it's something I have on hand.

I have a small grocer in my town that seems to have what is low or out of stock every where else. I made a starter so we’ll use that and don’t need flour but last weekend I was able to get 2 bags of flour and tp at this store!
we have been ordering bread from a baker but I don’t want to go out unless absolutely necessary so we’ll be making our own.

Just had an email from the supermarket detailing substitutions and items missing from the order I'll collect today - no yeast - again You can make a starter without yeast. You google a recipe.

In our baking aisle, there was no sugar, no flour and ONE box of yeast.. I pulled three packages of them just in case as I don't use too much of it. But I can't do much more as I am almost out of flour.

The Asian grocery stores here had plenty of “American” white flour yesterday. No yeast. I did find yeast online at Everything Kitchens; even though a number of people here found yeast at King Arthur Flour yesterday, it was gone by the time I got there.
eta: it is now out of stock at everything kitchens too. Sorry. I’m glad I have some coming tomorrow from them.

I haven't made bread since getting rid of the bread machine a decade or so ago so missed the run on yeast.
We have a fabulous local bakery that DH visits once a week (since they haven't had their stall at the farmer's market given the current situation).

Yeast is still pretty impossible to find here in my corner of the Denver area. Flour is always gone from the grocery store shelves too.
I did just order 1 LB of Saf yeast from OrsonGygi.com in case anyone is looking!

I found a couple packs at Aldi. We made homemade bread for the first time yesterday. It was fun with the kids. Turned out really good too!

If anyone is in Houston and looking for yeast or flour, there was plenty of both at Central Market today. Thanks for the tip about King Arthur. I got on the site today and ordered some yeast and several different specialty flours for my husband. They will be perfect for his Easter basket. He likes to bake. Lucky you! Every time I've looked at their site this week, most yeast and flour has said "Item is Temporarily Unavailable".

The only yeast they had in stock was an instant yeast which I have never used before. It had good reviews. The regular flour was on back order, but they had some fun specialty flours in stock like Italian flour and pastry flour.
