I am being told that yeast is impossible to find. That sort of stuns me. It has been my impression that very few women today know anything at all about baking with yeast.
I know how, and am currently baking all our bread (but only due to this crisis and not wanting to go out). Fortunately I bought a ton of yeast and stuck it in the freezer months ago. Don't know what good angel inspired me to do it, because I truly rarely use yeast.
But the current shortage makes me wonder. How many of you are now baking bread?

Not bread but i use yeast for other things, like cinnamon rolls. I also know a lot of friends who can bake but rarely bake are doing so now because their kids are at home.

We’ve made hamburger buns, English muffin bread, Irish soda bread, and pizza dough. We regularly make pizza dough and sourdough here.

I have yeast but I cannot find flour anywhere. I’ve been looking since the beginning of all this and haven’t found a bag yet.

Well it’s not surprising to me...there have been shortages for a while now. People here are avoiding grocery stores and baking their own bread etc..

I think quite a few are. Last time we went to the store there was a limit on bread. We figured since DH loves to make it then we could let the others have the store bought.
But I've seen a lot of posts/articles on artisan bread the last couple of weeks so I am guessing people are making it.
Our problem was stores are also out of flour. We were ok because we have a lot of wheat, but sometimes it is nice to have a mix of white and wheat.

My mom keeps asking me if I need her to send me some yeast ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/gFcgIuKyZogcCNuz36nO.jpg) . I haven’t baked bread since home ec in high school, and we still have it (bread) in the stores. I don’t know why there has been such a run on it. If I were to make my own bread I’d probably make sourdough instead.

My dh was watching this virus since January and in the middle of February he ordered about 20-25 bags of bread for our bread machine... hasn't been used in years. We haven't had issues finding bread. He doesn't really eat break so he expected something much worse from the stores.

I’ve always made it periodically, usually around holidays because my family expects it. I already had bread flour and yeast since I always have it on hand.

Yes, I've been baking a lot more (not just bread), and I use yeast. Going to make some yeast rolls this weekend. But flour is getting really hard to find. DH has looked for it the last 2 times he's been to the store and they were out both times.
ETA: I already had plenty of yeast, since I usually keep some on hand. I'll be making my traditional Italian Easter bread in about a week too (assuming I still have flour).

Aldi had flour and yeast this last week.
I used to bake all of our bread when I was a SAHM. March 1 I stocked up and included a jar of yeast in case we needed to make our own bread.

I’ve had trouble finding active dry yeast. We did get a few small envelopes at a local grocery store, but I hate that I can’t find any bigger bags of Saf Instant Yeast. I like to do rustic loaves and my DD makes donuts.

I did my big grocery run and should be good for a month except for bread and milk but good for milk for 2 or 3 weeks. Didn't check yeast but I have at least two bottles in the freezer. I make homemade pizza crust, hamburger and hot dog buns, rolls and bread. Since I go in spurts, I always keep it on hand. I've been worried about flour because the high altitude flour has been always out when I got off work. FINALLY, today I scored a 10 pound bag! I still have some but I can go through it in a BIG hurry when I'm "on a roll"! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I also make cakes, cupcakes and pie crust. Not to mention buttermilk biscuits, waffles and pancakes. I'm feeling better about my flour situation now.

Me... I haven’t baked in a while but I’m starting to now.
I have a couple friends who are on the lookout for flour and yeast for each other.
Earlier today - King Arthur had yeast in stock.
Check out your local bakeries. I bought yeast and flour from a local bakery today. Much cheaper than having it shipped and they will bring it outside to your car.

Yeast is almost impossible to find here too. Flour - I can get bread flour, but regular is harder to find. I don't usually bake, and bread seems to be in fairly good supply both in the supermarket and the bakeries. But - each year at Easter I make Hot Cross Buns, as they are not something I can buy here, and I just want one pack of yeast to do one batch, but no go. I think we've tried 4 supermarkets now. People have suggested sourdough to me, but as I only want to do the one batch, and feeding a starter takes a lot of flour, it seems a waste.

I haven’t made bread yet but made pizza dough ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) . I plan to make bread but got bread on my grocery pickup so will wait until we run out. Bread seems to be available again here. Still no flour but had bread flour and all purpose. I want whole wheat as mine in the pantry us several years old snd well bad. If I get sone I want to make rolls but if not I can make a different recipe. I may do pretzel rolls as my hubby really likes those but after we eat what we have.

I ordered yeast from Sam's. I had a couple of strips at home, but now that my culinary student needs to do her baking labs at home, we knew that probably wasn't enough. I couldn't find it anywhere around here, and Amazon was no help. I decided to check Sam's, and lo and behold, they had a package of 2 one-pound bags for $4.98 with free shipping. However, you couldn't just order one--the minimum order for that item was 2! I didn't need 2! I ordered anyway since that was the only way I could get it. What in the world am I going to do with 4 pounds of yeast? My mom will take one package when I see her again, and I have offered up the other two packages to a couple of co-workers and will leave it on the porch for them if they want to pick it up. It was a great deal--$2.50 for a pound of yeast beats the cost of buying the little strips.
My bread machine is going to be busy!

Ya, flour and yeast have been off the shelves for weeks here. A lady was crying in the baking aisle last time I went to the store. She was on her phone talking to someone saying her high school daughter needed both for her home economics class online. I felt so bad for her. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) I was just picking up a box of chocolate pudding and a free pre made graham cracker crust I won in the monopoly game. That’s as adventurous as I’ve gotten in the dessert game as I’m trying to actually lose weight during this mess lol

I bake bread a lot anyway, so I did make sure back in February to buy more yeast. I was nearly out. Amazon had the best price on a two pack 1lb bags, so I have enough to share with neighbors if needed. I grind wheat myself, so I ordered a big bag of wheat berries too. Those were already getting harder to find in February and I paid more than I usually do. I also got 2 extra 5lb bags of white flour.
I've noticed a lot of talk online about sourdough right now. I don't have plans to try it but if I get bored enough maybe lol.

You can make Irish Soda Bread without yeast, kneading or proving. It's a fast make. This is a pared down, what have I got in the cupboard receipe. cookingonabootstrap.com/2019/11/04/soda-bread-recipe-2/There are three types of soda bread, white, brown and fruit. Loads of videos online if the idea appeals.
