I’ve been watching gocleanco on Instagram for a couple of weeks now and she has a series on laundry stripping. I’ve been researching it for about a year now and now that I have the time, I’m finally going to dive in. I’ve ordered the supplies and I’ll be doing it! Starting with our clean towels.

Take clean laundry, hot hot hot water in the tub with borax and washing soda and detergent. Soak for many hours and all the grossness comes out of the fabrics. You then wash in just water in the washer.

I feel like this wouldn't need to be done if we got rid of water saving washing machines. Ever since I got one 12 years ago, I don't feel like my clothes are clean like the "old days."

My clothes feel clean with no “grossness” so don’t see any need....and it seems like it would ruin most of my clothes

I feel like this wouldn't need to be done if we got rid of water saving washing machines. Ever since I got one 12 years ago, I don't feel like my clothes are clean like the "old days." Can you not just change the water setting? |

I use Nellie's detergent (a powder, needs only a small amount, has just four ingredients) and an extra rinse. My clothes come out clean and well-rinsed. I'm good with this system.

That’s sounds awfully harsh on the fabrics. I’ll pass. This would be my concern. I do wash white socks and white towels in very hot water (sanitary setting), but I can't imagine washing all my clothes in super hot, or even hot, water.
I'm a firm believer in a thorough rinse, which is why I add an extra one to my cycle. (I don't live in SoCal anymore, so an extra rinse doesn't make me squirmy like it would if I was in a water-fragile state.) I really think a lot of laundry issues are rinsing problems, not detergent or washing problems. Perhaps it has to do with the low-water machines, as socalscrapper mentioned.

I agree with this. I think it is the new front load models. We got a new one about 4 yrs ago. Clothes stink. Washer stinks and the cycles take forever! |

That would be a lot of extra work and time. Unnecessary work, in my opinion.
If I feel like something is really dirty, then I run it through the washing machine twice.

The only time I stripped laundry was when I had odor issues with cloth diapers. We don't use fabric softeners at all. If anything I'd give my laundry an extra rinse.

I wouldn't mind trying it with bedding and towels. I bet it would bring out some deep seated grime (and probably make me feel sick to see it!). I don't think I'd do it on my clothes, but maybe on DSO's work clothes. I even found a tub of Borax hidden away in the laundry cupboard recently.

I still have a top loading washer. I feel it gets our clothes clean.
I also also always wash on either warm or hot.

I really don’t get my clothes all that dirty in a day that I need to do this. Would be terrible on the fabrics too.

Like AussieMeg, I can see maybe doing towels or cotton sheets once in a while but nothing else. I just don’t think adding extra laundry tasks I’ve managed without my entire life is for me 😉 |

I don't think anything in my closet really is that grimy that I would need to do this. Towels, washcloths, and bedding occasionally get bleached.

I have wanted to do this to towels just to release some of the soap/fabric softener that I think makes towels less than soft. I don't think anything is dirty per se, just has chemicals to be stripped. But I already use either washing soda or borax in many of my towel/sheet loads so I am not sure I would get much benefit.
Interesting that some people think clothes are not as clean with the HE/front loaders. I have had two in 12 years and I love them both. I think they get clothes way cleaner than our old top loader with agitator
