If you are putting your clothes into boiling hot water and letting them soak in it, of course you are going to get “dirty” water. You are releasing the dyes off the clothes.
Soak jeans and you will get the worst stink ever. Denim dye stinks to high heaven.
Your clothes are going to fade a lot faster than they should.

I agree with this. I think it is the new front load models. We got a new one about 4 yrs ago. Clothes stink. Washer stinks and the cycles take forever! I can’t wait for my front loader to die. I’ve taken to using laundry sanitizer in every load because my clothes are stinky if I don’t. I’ve run affresh thru it monthly even! It’s horrible. Have you cleaned out the filter thing in the bottom? If not, I’d be willing to bet that is the source of your stink. That little filter thing is supposed to be cleaned out every three months or so, and if you use liquid detergent, fabric softeners, etc. in the washer it’s more prone to collect up gunky stinky goo in that filter. On mine there’s a little tube that has to be disconnected (and black, icky water comes out, so I’ve learned to come prepared with a shallow tray to catch it from running all over the floor) as well as a piece that unscrews and is usually covered with stinky, sticky black disgusting goo. You can run all the Affresh you want through your washer but if you’re not cleaning that filter out regularly it’s always going to stink. ETA: I see that megmc and I were posting at the same time!

When I did it with the borax they were (originally) white socks that just wouldn’t come clean when I washed them. So in that case there was no dye to come out. Just dirt. Ugh. Now if I could just teach the kid to not walk outside or in the garage in her stocking feet, we’d be golden.

I have done this with white towels that I wash in oxi clean regularly and the water turned brown after five minutes and it smelled like sweat and body oil. The person running the Instagram page showed her gym clothes after she soaked and washed them and they didn’t look faded at all. Another friend of mine stripped her husbands work clothes and tossed in a white washcloth in the wash to see if any dye would come off the clothes and the white washcloth came out clean. He’s a firefighter with all navy blue shirts and pants. The water in her tub was disgusting and she said it smelled rank.

Allow me to join the chorus of "clean out your filter!" It's really easy to do, and I actually clean it more frequently than the manual recommends. I also have a long-handled brush that I cover with a cloth and stick it back into the drain to clean the drain itself. Ick!!! It was so gross the first time I did that! I've never had much of an odor problem with my front-loader because I've been cleaning this drain from the beginning. I also occasionally clean under the rubber gasket around the door. And the number one reason I believe I don't have problems: I have not used softener since 2014. Vinegar goes in the softener dispenser, which is enough for most loads as long as I don't overdo the detergent. If I have a heavy load like towels, I will run an extra rinse with additional vinegar. We still get temporary odor if someone leaves the laundry in for longer than a day. That has improved since I have convinced the rest of my family to use the "refresh" feature on the washer. It spins the tub every hour or so and fluffs the laundry so it isn't sitting in a pile of stink LOL! I think I have only used one package of Affresh in my washer since I got it in 2012. Still going strong, and still no lingering odor problems.

The only items I could see doing this with, would be my dh's work clothes. I already do a presoak, wash, and double rinse. But some items are stained. I wonder if that would help at all? I don't use towels, sheets, etc that long to get that grimy. I mean, ya, if you don't change your sheets for a month, then maybe? IDK. just wash your stuff more often? I think when people use liquid detergent and fabric softeners especially on towels, it kind of attracts more dust and dirt To them which then gets trapped in there. It also coats the fibers and makes them less absorbent. And then using an HE washer on top of that, the stuff just never gets truly clean, so just washing them more often won’t really help if it’s the laundry products and process itself that is the primary cause of the problem. The reason why I think this is because we have a friend with an incontinent pet. She had a small carpet cleaner machine that she used in spots where the pet had accidents. Everywhere she used it, over time there got to be really bad dirty spots on the carpet. Any dust and dirt being tracked through the house by her or the pets collected in those places on the carpet that had been shampooed, even worse than in the other places that hadn’t. (They were dirty too, just not as visibly dirty, if that makes sense.) It’s the soap residue that’s left behind that actually attracts MORE dirt. I think with laundry and especially the HE machines, a big part of it is not enough water is being used to rinse out all the soap residue. My washer has a water plus setting on it and now when I’m washing towels or other bulkier stuff like that, I use the water plus and the extra rinse/drum clean settings for those loads and I seem to have a lot fewer problems.

I'm good rinsing with Vinegar. I'm allergic to fabric softener so we don't use it or have the build up. Doing all of that seems like a lot of extra work, but to each their own.

I can honestly say I will never be bored enough to experiment with laundry. I literally take it out of the hamper, dump it in the washing machine, into the dryer, fold or hang. Done. No stink, no grossness, no problem.

Thanks for the clean the filter notice. I've NEVER done it and the washer is um.... 10 years old? Maybe older.... UGH! This is gonna be nasty. I might puke. I'm going to attempt that today. Have to figure out where the hell it is and how to access it. It's not readily visible on my washer anywhere.

That’s sounds awfully harsh on the fabrics. I’ll pass. It probably is - but I have done something similar for years on bed sheets, underwear, tshirts, and towels. I feel like this wouldn't need to be done if we got rid of water saving washing machines. Ever since I got one 12 years ago, I don't feel like my clothes are clean like the "old days." My HE top loader is a joke. I have actual dirt left ON the clothes. Granted, I am washing some majorly dirty stuff, but when there is actual reside on the clothes - it's not getting things clean. an you not just change the water setting? My HE washer, which is a few years old, will NOT run a pure hot load. It still mixes in cold water. I tried shutting the cold tap off and it wouldn't finish filling. but I can't imagine washing all my clothes in super hot, or even hot, water. I was almost all my stuff in hot SUPER HOT water. For example today, my husband is hauling liquid shit and had to pull a calf. The last time I saw him, about an hour ago, his pants have quite a bit of liquid cow shit on them, with a dose of blood and amniotic fluid on top of that. Plus some colostrum that he spilled filling the tube to tube feed the calf. This is typical laundry for me! LOL .. and my HE wasn't cutting it. I ended up buying a second machine that is the regular washer. A good old Speed Queen. It does 10X the job of my very expensive HE washer. Washes faster and MUCH MUCH cleaner than my HE does. I strip using hot water and Borax. I now use Rockin' Green Activewear to strip. I fill my washer with really hot water, add 3 scoops of this stuff and agitate my wash. I let it sit for a few hours. Finish cycle, then start a new cycle, again in hot and use my regular Persil detergent. It is amazing what comes out of our bed sheets. You think they are clean - but once you see the soaking water from this - ick. If you have a teen or young man in your house - and you know that FUNK .. this method gets that funk smell out!

I think the last time he got really shitty was when he was trying to load a calf and it quite literally kicked his ass. He even came in and said "can you get me a towel so I can take a shower. I just got my ass kicked by a calf". I can't even imagine trying to wash farm clothes in anything less than a washerload full of hot hot water. But I wash almost all of our laundry in hot.

This doesn’t seem like a good thing.
I think you’re just stripping the dye, not doing anything useful.
I’m incredibly gentle with our clothes, so they look nice for a long time. This seems like the opposite of that.

Okay, if we lived on a farm, I would totally be needing to wash a lot of our laundry in very hot water. lol However, no one here is hauling liquid shit or pulling calves, so I don't wash clothes in super hot water very often.
I will try that Rockin' Green on the hockey/gym clothes, though. Thanks!

For those that use Rockin Green for your sportswear, how hard is it on the fabrics? We pay good money for some of DH’s triathlon gear and don’t want to prematurely kill the fabric, or fade the colors from his raceday kits. Plus, my husband is weird and his sweat doesn’t stink. No, really. He doesn’t even need deodorant (except on his feet...Blegh). Do I need this for body oil build-up? I haven’t noticed any issues but I haven’t been looking for them either. I’m not doing the stripping for our clothes, my back wouldn’t allow it even if I wanted. But I can see the possible need for things like bed sheets and kitchen towels. Is it the softener that causes all that build up? Because we only use vinegar. We do wash lol towels and linens on a sanitizer cycle every time. Would this Rockin Green be good for them? Thanks for the reminder about the washing machine filter, prior to this I think we had done it once in the 12 years we’ve owned it He said barely any water came out and there was nothing in the filter. I will try that Rockin' Green on the hockey/gym clothes, though. Thanks! Ohhh, the hockey pad funk! Even my DH’s stunk to high heaven. At the time we didn’t know they could be cleaned and after living in his gym bag for a season it was like something died in there. I don’t envy you that!

I used this method on towels a few years ago. I think the recipe was 1/4 cup each of borax, calgon water softener, and washing soda. I soaked in my bathtub, so no filter. My towels were white, so no dyes. The water was gross! And it smelled nasty.
Everyone here saying that as long as you don’t use softeners you don’t need to strip are not correct. Hard water leaves mineral deposits over time just like you shower walls gets coated, and that traps body oil and funk.
Afterwards my towels weren’t as soft and were a little rough, but damn they were fluffy and bright white. They went back to normal softness after a few uses.
This method is particularly effective if you use well water or use homemade soap instead of detergent.

I think it really does well on sweat stink and body oils, and it doesn't seem to be harsh on the fabrics. I know a couple gals here use it on their workout clothes, and they spend some $$ on those clothes! gale w - I had a calf sh!t down my jeans leg this morning. I had to get it up and standing and as soon as I did, blech..very orange liquid poo down my leg. I came home and undressed in front of the washing machine. Gloves and all went in. I am SO glad I can do a double wash/double rinse on my machine. That has to be the best feature I have ever had in a washing machine! I use it a lot this time of the year.

Look in the manual of your front loader to see where the filter is and clean it. People have been posting their filters and they are NASTY. We just got a brand new was her about six months ago and I didn’t realize that part needed to be taken out and cleaned regularly. I just did it yesterday and it was full of pet hair and loose thread after only six months. Mine must not have a filter. No mention of it anywhere in the manual. We don't have smell issues, but sometimes it leaks during spin cycles. It comes out from between the washer and the pedestal. Haven't been able to tell what's causing it. I thought if there was a filter, maybe it was gunked up.

Hockey gear for teens and adults is god awful. I *hate* going into the rink and getting into one of the locker rooms that a high school team just vacated. There is NOTHING like that stink. It actually made me vomit (multiple times) when I was pregnant with my 4th. Unreal. My husband has a whole process and hooks and fans to hang up his stuff to dry after he plays. It helps.

Isn’t it? And I never had to deal with a locker room...I can’t even imagine. In this respect I’m happy there aren’t any real teams for Dh to play on around here. Or, there weren’t back when he still played and now he’s picked up a new sport. No complaints here. Except I’d much rather be a spectator in a rink (love the cold) than outside in the Texas summer heat. The things we do for love

One of the popular IG cleaning influencers who is a stripping proponent is also a QAnon follower who 'doesn't trust the news'. Me? I don't trust IG cleaning influencers who have kitchens that look like no one's ever cooked in them and walk around in pricey dresses posing languidly.
