She hasn't broken a law so why would she be arrested? I hope this goes to court. I really think something needs to get all these different agencies talking and having a cohesive plan. People have been taking care of ebola outbreaks in Africa for a long time and they come home and carry on with their lives. It wasn't until WE (Americans) got sick that people paid attention- who cares if Africans die- I think it is a little disgusting. But she HAS broken the law, as the state has mandated her quarantine. So she is going against the governor of Maine now. No it is NOT law.

She is self monitoring, in accordance with the CDC guidelines. Until and unless she has a fever and other symptoms, she would not be contagious. The political posturing that led to her being quarantined in an unheated tent in a parking lot is ridiculous. The CDC has experience in these matters, governors of individual states who are gearing up for an election campaign do not. She was quarantined in NJ because she had a fever of 101. Her attitude just rubs me the wrong way. I can't understand how someone as selfless as she was to go to West Africa and treat Ebola patients can be so selfish when it comes to her fellow citizens. I have a feeling she's making a point for some other ulterior motive. If I were the relief agency she represented, I wouldn't be happy either. I'm not sure arresting her is necessary though. Here's what I want to know -- who is her employer and where are they on this? I think I recall reading that after the NY doctor tested positive and is now hospitalized, his employer came out and said he had been on paid leave from the hospital and had not been in contact with staff or patients. I would take that to mean that the hospital was unwilling to take the risk during a potential incubation period. So why should a state take that risk?

Slowly but surely our personal freedoms are being taken away. Like others have said, she's asymptomatic, she's self monitoring, and she's a trained healthcare professional.

she did have a fever, she doesnt now. She has a bad attitude thats for sure
either way, we need to set 1 policy and stick to it for everyone that has been in contact with ebola
Politicians are saying quarantines arent science based and may not be needed, but they want to quarantine military members coming home who they are in control of. Doesnt make sense

She did not have a fever. She was upset about being detained for hours with no questions and they finally made her angry and they took her temp via her forehead (not accurate) and said ha you now have a fever. Once at the hospital she never had a fever so no. She was not sick and never truly had a fever.

Not to nitpick, but 21 days is 3 weeks. So it is weeks...... Maybe she would have self quarantined, but because it is being forced on her, she is rebelling? So again, devil's advocate: Wouldn't you? Rebel that is? We live in a country that allows us an extraordinary amounts of freedoms. There are a number of healthy debates here on the board about those rights (gun control anyone?) Her freedoms are being attacked in a way, and she is saying no thank you, look at the science, not the fear. Her freedoms were infringed upon when she was forced into the initial quarantine. By forcing her into a unnecessary quarantine, she is potentially losing those freedoms again. Doesn't she have the right to fight for those constitutional freedoms? Where are the people who argue against such things? Why aren't the same people who are fighting for their rights in other areas standing up and saying "NO, this is not okay?" Would I rebel, probably not. Not in my nature. Do I think she has a right to rebel, definitely. What I was trying to say was, if they had left her alone after she indicated she would self-quarantined, this might now be a non-issue. But because they have her being watched to make sure she is, that might be what is causing her to fight. Reminds me of my oldest, if she says she will do something, she'll do it. But if you force her hand, then the fighting starts......

I'm sorry, I should have noted that I quoted you not because I disagree with what you said, but because I was pointing out her right to disagree and fight a law that doesn't make sense and your quote fit with what I was trying to say.

She's a trained medical professional who has worked closely with Ebola patients. I'm pretty sure she knows protocol. She wasn't going to go around to grocery stores licking shopping cart handles or sneezing uncontrollably on the produce. What did she do today? She went on a bike ride. How is that threatening to anybody?
I agree if they had just had a discussion with her and let her self-monitor/keep a low profile, things would've gone much better.

Let me get this straight -- it's not accurate to take a forehead temperature for *her* because she was stressed. But isn't that the US Government's policy on how ebola will be kept out of the US? Take a forehead temp at the place of departure and arrival. So now that's not accurate. I wish that the conflicting words and actions of those in control would be blamed for the unease Americans feel. Ordinary Americans will not be quarantined after serving in West Africa, but hospital employers will quarantine their employees upon return. Ordinary Americans shouldn't be quarantined, but we will with our soldiers. Self-quarantine is ok until it's violated. If you're at risk for ebola, you shouldn't ride public transportation. But you can't catch ebola from riding public transportation. Am I the only one who sees the mixed messages here?

Doesnt make sense No she did not have a fever. Sigh. the more important part of my post is the 2 different protocols going on decided by our leaders. They need to figure out 1 protocol and stick to it for everyone, including our military Also, this report I read from the LA Times said not everyone with Ebola has had a fever "Yet the largest study of the current outbreak found that in nearly 13% of "confirmed and probable" cases in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and elsewhere, those infected did not have fevers. The study, sponsored by the World Health Organization and published online late last month by the New England Journal of Medicine, analyzed data on 3,343 confirmed and 667 probable cases of Ebola. The finding that 87.1% of those infected exhibited fever — but 12.9% did not — illustrates the challenges confronting health authorities as they struggle to contain the epidemic." www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-1012-ebola-fever-20141012-story.html#page=1I know you are extremely interested in this subject, I have no dog in this fight but I do think the way it was handled by the CDC is laughable.

Can we quarantine dumb asses? If we did we would run out of jail space, since a terrifying percentage of Americans refuse to believe science. The fact that people even entertain the idea of locking up innocent people without due process is horrifying.

A guy on the news yesterday said it is important for us to remember that more people have been married to Kim Kardashian than have died in the US of ebola. That kind of puts it in perspective.

I'm just trying to say that if her employer thought it was ok that she violated a voluntary quarantine they'd put forth the same argument you did and welcome her back. They haven't done it yet because they know it would cause a firestorm if they acted as if nothing happened and moved on.

The way that she was treated upon return the US was absolutely appalling. If I has been treated that way you can bet I would hire a fleet of lawyers and fight tooth and nail. I would absolutely rebel against those violations of my rights.
If this had been handled differently by the authorities I'm willing to bet she would have reacted differently.
She can't be arrested. She hasn't broken any laws.
*If* the state goes to court and is successful in getting a court order requiring her quarrentine *then* she could be arrested.

They haven't done it yet because they know it would cause a firestorm if they acted as if nothing happened and moved on. I think it would have been prudent for Nancy Snyderman to stay out of public and I think in general, it would avoid a lot of problems if the people returning did keep low profiles. My beef is more the unnecessary quarantines, which seem to be based on fear rather than actual science. And I can see why NBC is having her take some time off - the public is whipped into a frenzy about ebola and I'm sure they didn't want to deal with that, even if they didn't think she was wrong in what she did.

I agree with her. This is no different than when AIDS was the issue of the 80's. Not one bit different. You cannot get it from her unless you have direct contact with her body fluids IF she actually has the disease!
I hate that every time a new virus pops up we want to start imprisoning people. Yet there is a huge segment of the population that has the right to refuse vaccines for their children, bringing back all kinds of mostly erradicated diseases. Where is the outrage about that?
She doesn't have Ebola. Leave her alone.

They don't get the same rights afforded to them...which is a whole nother subject. Secondly I see no mixed messages. If someone is showing a high temp via a forehead thermometer (which is known for not being accurate) do an oral check. It is that simple. She never had a fever period. As for Americans feeling unease I don't see that in my life at all only here and on the web. Seriously. Buy into the hype if you want but the chances of being infected are so low it isn't even funny. We can't arrest people because you are scared.

President Obama had several health care workers just back from West Africa with him at a news conference yesterday who are at the same status as Kaci. Looks like he doesn't agree with this idea. And dr. Obama has lots of knowledge on this. Yet, he has no complaints of our military being quarantied for 21 days. Seems he is the one making this political.

This is getting ridiculous. ARREST HER? REALLY?!? This is fear and hysteria that I've not witnessed surrounding anything in my lifetime; it's bordering on insanity. Educate yourself on the science of how Ebola spreads - there is not one, single reason to believe this woman could infect others with Ebola at this time, even in the event that she actually DOES have Ebola - and at the moment, she is 100% asymptomatic and it is therefore scientifically improbable that she can infect others. Read every single one of Melissa's posts - she has been excellent in sharing with all of us the science of how this virus is contracted, and when (and how) others are susceptible to contraction by an infected patient. Please, someone stop the madness.

So, I'm watching this right now on the local news. The news media just camped outside her house waiting for her to leave, like stalkers? NICE! If it's such a fear, why aren't they staying away from her, hmmm? Oh, but let's see her ride her bike down a pretty much empty (except for the reporters, of course) street? SMDH!
MEDICAL professionals need to set the protocols. NOT the news media and definitely NOT politicians with no medical training who are doing nothing but fear mongering to drive up votes.
