No one is denying that an officer can take off his uniform and black man can't not be black. No one disagrees with that. The disagreement comes in when it's used to say that her fear is less than and to be dismissed. Show me where anyone on this thread has dismissed her fear? Nowhere that I can see has anyone done so. It's quite the opposite really. Everyone acknowledges her fear, and her right for fear. She just can't concede that her bias doesn't allow her to see, nor understand, anything outside of her little bubble. First page: Jesus fucking christ! The fact that you just posted this shows just what a clueless moron you are.

I usually ignore most of what that user says because of the way she says things. That said, I can't think of anyone else discounting her fear in this thread. And if there are, they are far and few between. A majority are validating her fears but trying to get her to acknowledge or understand the other side of that coin.

I'm not going to bother going through every post on this 7 pager, and I don't disagree with you on the majority. As my first post above indicated, I do feel like the OP has a hard time separating her own experience from other communities. BUT I absolutely think that there are several here who dismiss her fears and there are unfortunately others that are downright offensive which makes it hard to have a real dialogue. Everyone's falling back into the cases for outraged on their side and unfortunately there's no shortage of either.

A cop can take off the uniform. PERIOD A cop may “always” be on duty but without a uniform...and gun...nobody knows they are a cop. That cannot be said for a person of color. If a person cannot acknowledge that then my original statement stands. ETA: The OPs fears about her husband’s safety are valid. It’s just her statements I referenced above are absurd. Apples ands oranges. Also, NO PLACE in the post I Originally quoted did the OP mention her fear for her husband.

Here you would be wrong, and this is my personal issue as is many spouses. My husbands uniform comes off but he is never not a LEO. Always on duty, always ready to step in, protect and defend. I can't tell you how many fights, domestics, car accidents, run to school shooting, stop to back up an officer he has done out of uniform. Sorry he might remove the uniform but that is not what make his life a blue life. A blue life is heart, soul and being. Jesus fucking christ! The fact that you just posted this shows just what a clueless moron you are. How do you know that to some the very fact they chose to wear that uniform they become a target for no other reason they are wearing said uniform? That some nutcase follows an off duty officer home and once they know where they live stalk not only the off duty officer but members of his family that eventually leads to some bodily harm to the officer or members of his family? It seems to me the clueless one might be you for having such a narrow view of the the men and women who decide to work in law enforcement

He does not stop at a store or get gas because he wears his uniform to and from work. I used to think it was odd, but over the years I’m glad he is careful. We also have several layers of home security. I thought that was odd at first too, but I’ve come to appreciate it. I did ask him why he carries his gun on him when he is out of uniform. He said it’s because the inmates do recognize them when they are out. Those precautions are because he is in LE, not because he’s Latino. He was never like that when he was in the military.

Couple of points.
Half of the people on this board don’t put paragraph breaks when they post something. So instead of calling out just one person for not including paragraph breaks lets make it a general announcement.
*****To anyone who posts, especially long posts, can you please please remember paragraph breaks. It will make it soooo much easier for us to read what you are trying to tell us. Thank you.*****
Almost 50 years ago there was a case involving an old woman in my neck of the woods. The woman was cooking dinner and started acting strangely so the family became concerned and called the police. An officer showed up and shot and killed her. The reason, the old woman was Asian and was holding a vegetable peeler. This guy believed because she was Asian she must know some martial arts and could harm him with her vegetable peeler.
In 2017 the Tubbs Wildfire took out several neighborhoods in northern Santa Rosa. The fire moved so fast that the only notice many of the residents received were police officers and sheriff deputies knocking on their doors telling them to get out. A couple thousand homes burned in these neighborhoods so there were more then a few doors these guys had to knock on and they saved a lot of lives that night.
To me this represents the best and the worse of what the police do. Like everything in life, nothing is perfect. The goal with all police is to acknowledge the good that they do fix the worse that they do.
What do I think need to be done?
1. When a person decides to work in law enforcement they get an expertise most of us will never have. The officers need to maintain and expand this expertise. That is done through training. When the officers hit the streets they should be well trained. And that training should continue through their entire career.
2. Do I think it’s a good idea to defund please police departments? No because by doing so it’s going to put more of the public at risk and it’s not going to bring about the changes that need to be made.
3. There is a reason police are included under the term of “first responders “ and that is because in many cases they are first to arrive on a scene. And the reason is because they are out and about as opposed to sitting around throwing spitballs into wastebaskets.
Many feel that the police shouldn’t respond to calls involving mental health or drug related episodes. That the ones who should respond to these calls mental illness or drug counselors. It certainly would have helped the old lady above. But in some cases a quick response is needed. So unless those counselors are going to drive around waiting to be called wouldn’t it make more sense to provide enough training so that these first responders could stabilize the situation until the experts can get there? Instead of nothing being done until they can arrive?
4. The fact is not everyone is cut out to be police officers for various reasons. More care should be given to those that are hired.
5. The biggest change has to come from the officers themselves. They can’t stand around watching the bad behavior of some officers and not say anything. They can’t automatically support other officers if they step across “the” line. And to be honest every officer should know and understand the difference between right and wrong and if they don’t they have no business being in law enforcement.
6. I do believe officers should be held accountable for their actions but it has to be justified and not to quote BunkerBoy, a witch hunt.

He wears plain clothes now since his role changed from being an Officer, but he still works with inmates every single day. He's encountered ex-inmates in various locations over the years, some very close to home. In the close to home instances especially, he will drive way out of his way so as to not be followed home. If dh sees them before they see him, he tries to avoid them. If I am with him, I know if he says "GO" I am to walk away and act as if I'm not with him. We never show any PDA (holding hands, arm in arm etc...) in public for this specific reason. If any of them approach my dh and speak to him he has to fill out an incident report the next work day.

We've used our numerous times over the years. No explanation as to why to seperate just a word and we move.

Jesus fucking christ! The fact that you just posted this shows just what a clueless moron you are. I'm going to start reporting every one of your posts where you use extreme profanity and/or call other members names. Kind of had it. This kind of behavior should be considered unacceptable here. Either discuss with clarity and integrity, or don't participate. That you immediately go to name calling shows your lack of ability, and frankly, couth. Sorry, not sorry. You must be clutching your pearls and doing a shitload of “reporting extreme profanity“ on the RBG thread. Sorry, not sorry.

Now imagine feeling the way peas feel about their LEO spouses but about your BIPOC family members - every day, day in and day out for something they didn't choose as their employment. Something they can never change. Something from which they never vacation or retire.

I think about it everyday as I have not only a LEO Dh and other family members but I also have BIPOC family. In fact my nephew was just in a drive by shooting 2 weeks ago. Shot twice in his head and once in the hand. Lost the use of his thumb and is just now getting his speech back. He was the lucky one. His buddy is dead. Some of us really can see all sides.

The tone deafness goes both ways and I find it comical some statements that are made.
Some PEAS like to say over and over y'all don't hear me speaking the POC names that were killed. That I show no remorse, concern or outrage. The same can be said about you! Without looking it up on the internet, can you say the names of the LEO's who have been MURDERED this year protecting communties?
So, yes I haven't chanted or screamed the POC names. I honor them by volunteering in my community, by supporting change and by allowing people a chance to be decent.
When a person is murdered, it MATTERS, regardless of their skin color their life mattered.
Take a moment today and be a postive voice a postive action in your community/the world I know we will...

I’m not suggesting we send social workers to deescalate domestic violence calls (although I think they should be there after the police deescalate). Of course the police need to go in first. But how about when someone is arrested for domestic abuse, they have to go to MANDATORY counseling instead of/in addition to jail. And that victims be offered SERIOUS resources...counseling (so maybe they examine why they stay in an abusive relationship) and resources to help them get out. Yes...I get that we already have that stuff, but clearly it is inadequate. Our shelters are always full and women are regularly turned away. Police are often called OVER AND OVER AND OVER to the same households. That’s where social workers and counselors need to take over, but we leave it to the police. I get nothing about this is easy...

Actually we don't have that stuff. Why? Because mental health is so limited because of: Area Cost Insurance (you can only go to these 3 covered places even though there may be 10) Waiting lists There needs to be a huge overhaul to mental health care and facilities.

Why can only police lives defend themselves? See my point?

@leowife You ask where to cut the money from police budgets? How about NOT arresting people for simple drug possession? How often does ARRESTING someone actually cure their drug addiction? Almost never. How about not arresting people for marijuana at all? How much money could we save (and put into addiction services, instead)? How much time would we free up for police? Amount spent annually in the U.S. on the war on drugs: $47+ billion Number of arrests in 2018 in the U.S. for drug law violations: 1,654,282 Number of drug arrests that were for possession only: 1,429,299 Number of people arrested for a marijuana law violation in 2018: 663,367 Number of those charged with marijuana law violations who were arrested for possession only: 608,775 Percentage of people arrested in 2017 for drug law violations who are Black: 27% (despite making up just 13.4% of the U.S. population) Number of people in the U.S. incarcerated in 2016: 2.3 million – the highest incarceration rate in the world Number of people in the U.S. incarcerated for a drug law violation in 2016: 450,000 www.drugpolicy.org/issues/drug-war-statistics

Because too many Americans like to beat their heads into a wall doing the same old broken stuff instead of trying new ways. Because too many Americans are afraid of change and listen to the boogeyman scare stories about any change instead of looking for the people behind the scare stories who benefit from the status quo. Because too many Americans too easily swallow "socialism" as an excuse for not doing something different. Because too many Americans are too ignorant and too incurious to push for better ways to run society.

But untill we do that they HAVE to enforce the law. Anyone have any info on states that have legalized Pot and stopped charing for minor drugs? Has it saved money, improved the community, freed up LEO?

Universal healthcare would be a good start. But we need to make sure that mental health providers are paid enough to make a living.

Some of us really can see all sides. I'm so sorry for your nephew and his friend.

Unfortunately though only Police lives matter all the time. POC lives don't matter and it is evident in the killings of them. If they truly mattered, police wouldn't be going on shooting sprees. Why can only police lives defend themselves? See my point? No I don't. It's full of lies. Police are vilified for defending themselves If they truly mattered, police wouldn't be going on shooting sprees. That is an outright lie. It's also puts their lives at risk. Perpetuating that lie is part of the ongoing problem. I blame the media and Democratic politicians for feeding you that lie. People like Biden saying a Caucasian wouldn't be stopped for a routine traffic stop. The media jumping to calling any police shooting of a black person as racially motivated as soon as it happens, before we have any facts and the politicians publicly going right along with it and repeating it to anyone who will listen.
