I had a grocery pick up yesterday that was taking forever, so I had a lot of time to observe people coming and going.
My first question is, when you are going to a store, when do you put on your mask? I, personally, put mine on before I even get out of the car, but most people I saw waited until they got right by the door of the store.
I also had to get gas, so my second question is, do you wear your mask when pumping gas?
Finally, do you wear your mask when going through a drive through- like Starbucks?
I was just curious what everyone’s thoughts were. I will continue to do what I am doing (wearing my mask in all these instances because it doesn’t bother me to wear my mask) but I am wondering what conventional wisdom is on this.

I put my mask on in the car and due to the regulations in my city we are required to wear masks while pumping gas if others are around and at the drive thru when you get to the window to pay/pick up your food. There’s signs indicating such.

Also wanted to add that I use hand sanitizer after all these transactions. I keep a bottle in my car, purse, gym bag, etc.

I don't really have a "usual". LOL If I can park close, I put it on in the car, but if I am parked further out, and hook it on one ear and put it on fully when I'm closer to the door. Mostly I think because it's been so hot. Once the weather changes a bit more that might change. LOL
I don't wear it when pumping gas, there is usually no one else within the recommended 6 ft. However, I do use hand sanitizer before I get out of the car, and only touch the gas cap, pump, keypad, etc with one hand (usually my right), and don't touch anything with that hand (door handle, sanitizer bottle, etc) until I use more sanitizer.
I don't wear it to drive-thrus. I figure I'm usually pretty far away from the person in the window.
ETA- Also, I tend to take my mask off or dangling from one ear, if I am the only one in the aisle of the store and I've stopped to read labels, etc. If I am walking around or going to be "near" anyone, I do keep it on properly.

Before I get out of the car Yes Yes. They actually ask you to when they take your order at Starbucks. I don’t do drive through anywhere else.
I find that the majority of people who live in my little corner of the world do similarly.

Somewhere between the car and the door. No to your other 2 questions. I’ll wear it as long as it’s required but not a second longer then necessary.

I put my mask on before I get out of the car. I wait till I'm back at my car to take it off.
I do grocery pick up and put my mask on when my groceries are coming because inevitably, even though I have the back of my car open (SUV, so they can easily talk to me from there), they want to come right up to my window and talk to me.
I put my mask on (and wear gloves) when I pump gas. It's the only place I wear gloves though.
I put my mask on when I'm going to be at the window of a drive through. Though the only drive through I've been through in 6 months is Starbucks a hand full of times.
Overly cautious, maybe. But it's what I feel good about doing for myself.

I put my mask on before I get out of the car and remove it when I return to the car, and use hand sanitizer. I wear it anytime I am in public or have an exchange with people and when I'm walking the dog.

Like someone else, I also keep hand sanitizer in my pocket and my car, plus a thing of clorox wipes on my car as well.
ETA: I don't "wash" my groceries anymore though. I moved past that a few months ago. It was too much work and created way too much anxiety for me.

At the store: I put it on either in the car or just outside of the car. Sometimes there's multiple people entering or leaving at the same time and I just don't feel comfortable approaching that without a mask. When I leave the store, I either remove it at the car or when I've gotten far enough away (judgement call).
Drive thru: don't wear it. I also pay with exact cash to avoid giving them my card or getting change back. I don't go much these days with DH working from home all the time.
Curbside pick ups: haven't felt the need to. None of them will approach the driver's window. I unlock the lift gate, they open it, place my items in the back, tell me to have a good day, close it and wave. The closest I've had them come was to the passenger window to ask for id.

1. Before I get out of my car (too much of a pain to fiddle with it coming up to the door) 2. Not when pumping gas. 3. Not when going through any drive-thru.
ETA: Where I live in Ohio the whole mask situation it is such a HOT mess. No one wants to wear a mask. A LOT of people refuse to wear them. I would say if I'm sitting outside of any grocery store around here (Walmart, Meijer, Kroger) and watch people coming and going, there is probably a good 30-40% of people that do not wear masks.
I walked into our UPS Store and none of the employees wear them. Gas station employees (Speedway) don't wear them and customers going in don't wear them. There are several other places I have walked into where employees are not wearing them and customers do not wear them.
I sat outside the gas station the other night (while my sweetie went in and paid...and wore a mask!) and counted 13 people going in and there was only one lady wearing a mask and she was elderly.
If you wear one, you're called a sheep.
I choose to wear one!

Going into a store - I put on my mask before getting out of the car and take it off when I get into the car.
Going into my office - I put on my mask somewhere between my car and the door and take it off before getting into my car. (No idea why it's different, other than I'm typically the only person in the parking lot at work.)
Grocery/restaurant pickup - I put on my mask when I park.
Drive-thru - I order without the mask and put it on before getting to the window.
Food delivery to my house - I put on a mask before opening the door.

Put mask on in car because I’m vain and want to check the mirror to make sure the elastic hasn’t made my hair all wonky. Hand sanitize, wear out of store, unload groceries, return cart to rack, hand sanitize, remove inside car.
Haven’t pumped my own gas recently because I use a full serve in my town—wear a mask.
The only drive thru I’m using these days is the pharmacy and they have a glass partition, so no mask.

My gas tank is on the side closest to the pump and if there is someone on the other side pumping gas we are almost certainly closer then 6 feet I think, which is why I wear mine.

I usually put my mask on in the car, but I also often walk to the store, so then I put my mask on when I start seeing people.
I wear it when pumping gas.
I also wear it in the drive-through.
Basically, it’s on whenever I am in an indoor space that is not my house or my office with the door shut, and in an outdoor space any time I am going to be anywhere near people; I’m near people when they are handing my coffee at the drive-through or pumping gas at the adjacent pump.

Grocery store: As I'm walking across the parking lot/before I'm within 6ft of another person Gas station: Only when I have to go inside. Drive Thru: No
Side note: I taught a sourdough class outside on Saturday. We had tables 6+ feet apart (only people who attended together were at a table together). I was about 12+ feet from the first table, so I didn't wear a mask while I was teaching, but I did put it on when I walked the starter/dough around to the individual tables (so everyone could see the consistency). I also wore a mask and gloves while I was preparing the plates of samples that I wrapped individually before class started.

It’s interesting reading the responses. Of course a lot of it can be attributed to where in the world you live but I think also can be attributed to how you live.
I live in a densely populated area. Also, I live in a condo, and masks are required when doing something as simple as taking out the recycling or picking up mail. Therefore I’m used to just wearing one whenever I’m outside of my own condo.

If I am going inside somewhere I put my mask on in my car.
I like to take my time adjusting it, making sure my hair and earrings aren’t caught in it, etc. Once I get out of my car I try not to touch my mask at all.
I do not wear a mask pumping gas.
I do not wear a mask in a drive thru.
The exception is if I’m running several errands in a row, I will just leave my mask on the whole time, including in my car, instead of taking it off and putting it back on a bunch.
Every time I put on a mask I put on a clean one and every time a mask is used at all, even just for a few minutes, it gets washed.

I put my mask on as I’m walking in the parking lot but quite a bit before the store. Dh does it right when doing into store.
I wear for drive thrus because I think it’s courteous. I have also seen a couple drive thrus saying they are required.
I barely pump gas anymore because I go so few places and Dh gets it when we are together but the other day I did and wore my mask.

Somewhere between the car and the door. No to your other 2 questions. I’ll wear it as long as it’s required but not a second longer then necessary. I completely agree with this. I'm so worried about romanticizing mask wearing which is why I won't buy a "cute" mask to match an outfit. I wear a mask because I don't want to have a confrontation and because I'm a rule follower (for the most part). There is no way that breathing our own carbon dioxide all day is healthy. I worry about my six year who has to wear one everyday, even during PE and recess. I want to cry when I think about it. I wonder what the long term effects will be for our children who are now used to not seeing smiles and expression and aren't allowed to touch one another. DS's teacher doesn't know his smile. It's heartbreaking.

They actually ask you to when they take your order at Starbucks. I don’t do drive through anywhere else. I have never been asked at Starbucks drive thru to put on a mask. I have been to Starbucks in 4 different states.

This is a serious question and is not meant to sound snarky... Why would people not wear a mask at drive up picking up window? Even though you are outside the worker is often leaning out to you to accept cash, get your credit card or hand you credit card machine. Therefore they are getting relatively close to you and would have done exposure to your germs. These people are often low income and have no choice but to work. Is it fair to expose them all day long (even though risk is relatively low)? To answer your question, I put on my mask after getting out of my car at store. I usually wear mask at gas station unless it’s empty.

I put mine on before I exit the car.
I wear it while pumping gas.
I wear it at the drive thru because when they hand me my items, we are closer than 6’.
I also put mine on when dining when the waiter comes to the table.
