The BBC have just reported this story, Www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-55495933US hospital employee 'intentionally discarded vaccine vials' A US hospital where more than 50 vials of the Moderna vaccine were discarded earlier this week has said the employee who removed the vaccines did so “intentionally” and was no longer employed by the hospital, local media report. On Monday, hospital officials said 57 vials of the vaccine had to be thrown away because of human error. The vials being discarded led to 500 doses of the vaccine being thrown out, according to the statement from the Advocate Aurora Health medical centre in Grafton, Wisconsin. “We immediately launched an internal review and were led to believe this was caused by inadvertent human error," the hospital said in the statement on Wednesday. "The individual in question today acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration. “We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us." Pretty sure if I had a relative in line for this vaccine today I want more consequences for the employee than job loss.

That's appalling. Don't have a vaccine if you don't 'believe in it' but to stop other people getting theirs is shocking.

Despicable. I hope they find a way to press criminal charges.

I THINK this is the same health care system that had a nurse partying in a crowded bar without a mask last spring, saying she was not worried, etc. when interviewed by a news crew. I wonder if it’s the same nurse?

Oh, great. Another stride forward in the move from armchair idiocy to criminal idiocy.

This person needs to be charged with felony theft AND made to reimburse the cost.
Disgusting.

I wasn’t led to the story by your link, it just gave me the front news page of the BBC. Kind of like don't have gay sex if you "don't believe in it" or don't have an abortion if you "don't believe in it". But no. The true believers (tm) have to make sure we all abide by their beliefs.

elaine, sorry, I should have been clearer, it's reported in the bbc live feed which keeps being updated and then the story slips down the page. They don't always make a separate article for each story. The time stamp is 13.12. Thanks for adding another link/

OMG that is awful. What the heck is wrong with these people that they think they have the right to control other people's lives with their warped beliefs.

My SIL works at this hospital in the cancer center pharmacy. I haven't had a chance to ask her about it yet but I may have to call her this weekend. I doubt she knows anything more about it.

I wonder if it’s the same nurse? It doesn't specify whether it was a nurse though. It could be an admin person or even a cleaner. It just says a hospital employee.

How about endangering the welfare of at least 500 people! ETA: that number could be way bigger if those people are spreading Covid before they finally get a proper dose!
Grand theft. Held without bail as a risk to the general public.
I see lots of charges there. Of course I am not a lawyer, but I can think!

I think our local news reported it was a nurse, but I may not be remembering correctly. Whatever the case, if it is the same healthcare system, it may indicate a more systemic problem. That would concern me more. One stupid nurse or are there more?

I initially saw it was a nurse that had done it.
What I am having trouble understanding is why 57 vials equals 500 doses. I read that the people administering the vaccine were excited because most vials were filled enough for 5 and sometimes 6 doses when it's labeled for 4 doses. Therefore, 57 vials sounds more like 225 - 300. Still way way way too many, but...

If I've learned anything from this administration and this year, it's that no matter how low you think the bar is, someone is always willing to lower it more.

I think because they can't guarantee that the storage temperature wasn't affected (door open) and therefor the vials were compromised.

In the US, vaccines and other potent drugs are kept under lock and key (or codes, with new technology). Access wouldn’t be given to just anyone; just those who need it. So it likely want a cleaner or even an admin; it was likely a nurse as they’re administering the vaccines in most places.

Pfizer vs Moderna? We heard a lot about extra doses in the Pfizer. I think this was Moderna. I don’t remember hearing about number of doses per vial.

Hmm, you are probably on to the source of my confusion. Thank you. I assumed they would be using a similar sized vial because of the handling protocol, but that doesn't mean I am right. Off to go peek about.

This now has me wondering if said asshole was hoping to get them put back away before getting caught. And if so, is this putting our supply in danger if their are other rogue nurses out there. Ugh. Mean people suck. ETA gsquaredmom, Doh, I quoted my own self. ☺

Not only ruining but also potentially causing ineffective vaccinations to lessen perceived effectiveness and/or prolong the pandemic. I would be surprised if they degrade to something harmful, but I would expect ineffective.

Unrelated Fauci had said that the effectiveness could be compromised, but not dangerous if used.
