AMEN~~ That is why my mom is currently on her way to Ft. Lauderdale area. I am so tired of the finger pointing and shaming about who is doing what. I’m remembering your characterization of your friends’ - many friends, if I recall right - choices as living in utter fear every single day. What’s finger pointing and shaming for the goose is finger pointing and shaming for the gander.

We spent the entire summer in Texas this year instead of going to our own property in Maine because of Maine’s restrictions on travelers. We chose to respect those rather than thumbing our noses at something they couldn’t enforce.
We canceled a tentative trip across our own state at Christmas because numbers were rising in the Big Bend area and local residents begged people not to come.
So I don’t have sympathy for the snowbirds who feel they just can’t survive without going to Florida. I don’t believe it’s OK to flout health guidelines just because they don’t have the force of law. Consult your internal moral compass, if you have one. Stay the fuck at home.

True north on the moral compass is highly, highly relative these days (and fluctuates frequently, it seems).

My parents are losing over $15K because they commit to their Florida rental a year ahead. Their rental agency won't let them out of the contract because Florida isn't shut down. They were in Florida when all this started and have been really careful, including during their drive home earlier than planned. I do some of their grocery shopping but I do not go in their house. They really waffled about going this winter for quite a while before deciding it wasn't worth it because it wasn't just themselves they would be putting at risk. I think they are holding onto an inkling of hope that they could go down for a bit after they are both vaccinated, but I don't think they'll both be able to get both doses in time.

I'm sorry for your parents and all the others who are stuck in shitty situations. Meanwhile, I open my Twitter feed to see the politicians (both sides) gathering for photo ops at the swearing in. FFS. So happy to see that, once again, the rules don't apply to them.

Here's the thing - We have been telling ourselves how safe we're being, the good choices we're making, justifying every risk we take. Myself included. Everything is a risk in a pandemic. There is no binary - safe or not safe. There is only more safe and less safe. And, when a CHOICE can be made to reduce risk not only for oneself but for others, and another less safe choice is made, you have to admit that your less safe choice has impact. No amount of telling ourselves stories of bubbles and pods and "only" doing certain things will change the fact that some of our choices make ourselves (and, I'd say more importantly, others) less safe. I completely agree. In another post on here I was told I was being harsh and uncaring for saying the same. I’m so tired of the people who say, “oh, we never go anywhere “ and in the next breath tell me about going to church, the mall, the gym, etc.

Hypothetical of course but what if there were travel restrictions such as closed state borders in the US? Or how about a natural disaster such as a hurricane or series of hurricanes that destroyed retirement communities or areas where retirees come for the winter? Wouldn't people have to be resourceful and stay put? How is this different? Not ideal for some, but again this may be temporary if people think and look at the big picture. There’s no such thing as closing state borders in the US. It’s unconstitutional and completely unenforceable. Florida state troopers were having checks on the freeways coming in and turning people around over the summer. If you from New England you were turned around. Now, I doubt there was anyway to monitor every single small road going into Florida but they were doing it.

NJ would have a fairly short border to cover with NY state, we did not consider it. The rest of the state is bordered by water, only accessable by bridges and a few tunnels which would all be closable.

I live in Florida where the "season" is in full swing. Bars and restaurants are packed. I see a lot of people who say they're staying home, getting groceries delivered, etc. but observation would indicate otherwise. FYI, most snowbirds that I know aren't living in RVs although it happens.
Our governor downplays the pandemic because it's good for our economy so why wouldn't people come to where they can go about business as usual? So frustrating because we'll never pull out of it with this kind of attitude.

I hate when snowbirds invade our state anyway. This year infuriated me because Arizona is already out of control with cases with overloaded hospitals. The last thing we need is more people to crowd our hospitals, especially those from the population most likely to need it. Add to that that in my experience most older people aren’t careful about covid and it just increases the infection rate for the rest of us. I wish they’d stay home.
