Never thought that I would be so happy that trump showed his ass and isn't there. He isn't smearing his stink all over an amazing event. YAY!!! I equate it to my wedding day when my moms side wasn’t there. It made my day so much happier. And it got to be about ME.

President Joe Biden. There. I just had to say it to make it seem real. I am beyond happy. I’m thrilled.

I'm about 15 minutes behind, so I just watched them introduce Amanda Gorman as the first National Poet Laureate... did we really NOT have a National Poet Laureate before? really? why not? (or did I mis-hear that intro?)

President Joe Biden. There. I just had to say it to make it seem real. I am beyond happy. I’m thrilled. For four years, I couldn't utter the word unless I was pointing out his stupidity. Well PRESIDENT Trump... to make my point he was unfit for the title.

(or did I mis-hear that intro?) I think they said first young poet laureate. I could be wrong. Like there's now two?

Ok, I’ve got a question. Is it ok to call him Joe? I feel like he’s a Joe, not the most powerful man in the world (though he is and not just the a president but a friend. My late father-in-laws name was Joe and I just want to feel like this is MY President, my friend. Would that be disrespectful? I actually can respect the man in the office now and want to be respectful. What do the peas think? Janet I've felt the same. In Seattle, for the last few years they've had two football Coach Petes. One a shortened version of his last name (University of Washington's former coach), because that's the respect he commanded. The other based on his first name, because that's the familiarity that he imbues (Seahawks coach). I think he would rather be President Joe to the people, Americans, while still being President Biden on the World stage and to his colleagues. I can imagine him, to the people who work in the White House, playing out the scenes in movies where someone tries to get someone to refer to them by their first name, and they respond with the honorific, "Yes, Mr. President." Or how many times must I ask for you to call me Joe, "Always one more Mr. President."

For anyone playing along as though this was the event of the year, any picks? My main disappointment is that no men stood out or made bold choices.
Classic pick: Michelle Obama, absolute monotone win. Strong, feminine, perfectly tailored and the right hue of "subdued brightness".
Wildcard pick: Ella Emhoff, youth's boldness with class. Another really well-tailored look with just the right amount of whimsy to brighten up such a solemn event. As an actual scrapbooker (yes, yes, some of us still scrapbook), I remain partial to a glitter vomit/sneeze. Can't help myself.
Overall winner: Amanda Gorman, the coming together of literary force and physical allegory. The strength of the words brought to life by the voice, the gestures and, ultimately, the fashion. Her look carried the message.
Special mention: Gaga's oversized Mockingjay of peace brooch. Did not care for the skirt part of her dress that looked like bubbling lava swallowing her (yes, yes, that's *so* Gaga but still gonna be a meh from me) but that pin was a gorgeous symbol of hope on the centre stage.

That holy roller sermon coming after that beautiful secular poetry was such a downer. I have to keep reminding myself how Christians are so oppressed in our country Especially the white Christian men. *sniffles*

I know I'm late to the party, but when Lady Gaga sang the national anthem I burst into tears.
Yay President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democracy!

I love that Garth is singing unaccompanied and that he asked people to join in the last verse - UNITED. That was lovely, I'm so glad he was there. My son started singing very loudly. I was so damn proud. That is so awesome! <3

I had never heard of Amanda Gorman before today, but she was amazing. I haven't been that moved by a poet since Maya Angelou. My DH said "Maya Angelou doesn't have shit on that young lady" - I was almost mad at him for saying it, but I can't help but think Maya herself would approve. Amanda Gorman was incredible!

My daughter is in cohort from school so she is remote learning today. I wish her teacher let them take a short break to watch Harris and Biden being sworn in. But no, they did not. So I recorded it for her! I grew up in Maryland in a suburb or DC, and schools were closed for Inauguration Day! When my kids started school (we are in southwest PA) I couldn't believe they had school on Inauguration Day. So different growing up so close to DC!

No school today -online - in NoVA for Inauguration Day! We get election and Inauguration Day off. (Unfortunately, I have some issues going on with Walter Reed sending pre-op paperwork to the doc’s office who is doing my surgery on Monday, and with it being closed today, they won’t get to it until after my surgery is scheduled.)

I would have liked to see Pence and Kamala shake hands as they parted, but I don’t judge — If I were her I would have wanted to kick him in the ass as he walked away. She and her husband walked down the steps towards the car Pence was getting into and waved them both off.

I loved almost every single moment. Least favorite would be the Catholic priest (or bishop?). I couldn't be more thrilled with our new pres and VP and am so grateful to have two really good humans at the helm of our country! I will pray for their safety and that of their loved ones and everyone in the administration daily.
Loved the Black minister's remarks, LOVED Amanda Gorman - how can she be only 22??? - and have never heard a more beautiful rendition of our oh so very hard to sing anthem. Loved seeing Barack and Michelle.
Loved Joe's speech (I agree, he feels like Joe but I don't want to disrespect him, no disrespect intended!). It feels like his previous failures in being elected president were needed in order for this man with so much heart, compassion and intellect to lead us now! I'm thrilled he's got Kamala at his side, expect much wise counsel from her.

PBS NewsHour had an interview with Amanda Gorman a day or two ago. Based on this, I was really looking forward to hearing her at today's inauguration ceremony. youtu.be/nJaal1B-t38
