Just looked out and our patio furniture, mulch in the beds and the roof are totally white here. Hoping we get the snow they are predicting to start about 2 am! I’m a kid at heart when it comes to watching the snow fall. What's coming down between Hobby and Ellington isn't snow, but it's not really what I consider sleet either because it's floating.

Okay, we get it. You win. Your area has much worse weather and we are nothing but wimps for discussing/commiserating/complaining about our current once in a 100 years event. The purpose of this thread was for Texans to check in with each other, not have all the Northerners come in and play one-upmanship with tales of how much worse you have it and can handle it with ease. 😆😆 Though, y'all are big wimps. Us hardy Midwesterners walked to school in 3 foot snow drifts when we were in kindergarten. Uphill. (No for real I really did) But now I'm a southerner and a HUGE wimp. It was 43 degrees yesterday and I wore my winter coat to the store and put my heated seat on. I'm a bigger baby about the cold than almost anyone on this thread. I happily go walking in the blazing sun in 100 degree heat in the summer. I'll never move where it gets cold ever again. I do need it to be cool when I sleep though. Walking in 100 degree heat? I admit to being a huuuuge whiner about heat. I’ll walk really early to escape it. If it’s above 80, that’s too hot for me.

This Norwegian was wondering, too 😉 But, I’m guessing it’s unusually cold for Texas and that’s the issue? Below 0 farenheit for weeks here, and business as usual. Schools open, life continues as normal. The electric bill will be anything but normal, though, because the prices have gone up due to the cold weather down in continental Europe. My husband just got back from about 3 minute walk with the dogs. It's been -10 the last few days and we've done 15-25 minute walks. This morning is -24. We got a good 6-8 inches of snow to top it all off. Supposed to be back up in the 50's in a few days, so I don't mind the cold as long as it doesn't stay long. What do you do to keep your face from freezing? I walked and it was in the teens. My face was freezing. My friend wore a mask because it helped to keep her face warm. My scarves never stay put when I try to pull them up over my cheeks.

Welp. Got our water fixed (by the city) around 430. And now they are saying we are going to rolling electrical blackouts for most like the next day or so. We will be ok -- we have a generator for our home -- but its still a pain.

Usually half way into the walk, it is off, the coat is unzipped and the gloves are off. Today it stayed put.

Texas Peas, I just read about the power outages. Here’s hoping that the federal emergency declaration approval brings help sooner rather than later. 🤞🏻

How’s everyone doing this morning? I have about an inch of snow/ice covering everything in my yard. Brrrr. We are among the fortunate folks to still have power this morning, but I’m sitting here in the dark trying to conserve power, because apparently the rolling blackouts have started.
Stay safe and warm out there. If you had to drive in to work this morning, let us know when you’re safe.

Just woke up to everything covered in snow, but no no electricity. It’s been off for a while because the house has already gotten quite chilly. Hoping they turn it back on soon! Will check in later when we get power back.

We’re okay at the moment, but my parents that are 75 and 80yrs old have been without power since 4am. Nothing we can do to help as they live 35 min away. It’s 55° in their house now, and I know that they are really cold. There are three people on my husbands work team that live S of us who all are without power right now, too. We haven’t lost ours yet, but I’m really expecting it at any moment. This is crazy!

Several people we know are without power, but we still have ours. A lot of our house runs on gas, so you think that could be why? Maybe we don’t use up as much electricity?
*Fixed frozen finger typos. LOL

It went out at 2:30 am because of a transformer. Nearly impossible to get information on when it will be repaired. Hope you have power soon.

Our power has been out since 2:19 am.
It’s currently 9:05.
So far we’re ok with the cold, but I just want one cup of coffee 😫
And I’m starting to panic about feeding kids without cooking.
I mean, we have plenty of canned goods and stuff, it just sucks.

I have a friend that lives in Denton and she and I have been texting. I live in MA. I feel bad for you guys. You don’t have the infrastructure to deal with this. It’s different up north where you can get a foot of snow and be dug out and on the road in 12 hours or less. Also, my friend is battling freezing pipes. Here in the north, we don’t put pipes on exterior walls due to the cold. I asked her about blackouts because I wasn’t understanding that and she explained that most have electric heat and gas fireplaces. Ahhh. Ok. I have propane to heat but we also have natural gas, oil and electric up here, though, electric isn’t very common, more seen in apartments/condos. She was saying that the electric company was asking people to put their heat no higher than 68* which floors me because my heat doesn’t go above 60*. But you Texans are a hearty breed because I, as a northerner, couldn’t deal with your summer heat. I feel like our summers have been getting hotter and more humid and I hate it. I can deal with the heat however the humidity is my undoing.
My friend was lamenting that she didn’t have a shovel. I don’t think she’ll need it b/c it looks like it’ll warm up by the end of the week. It’s not like here where I’ve had snow in the ground for weeks. We’re expecting rain/ice today/tonight and again Thursday/Friday. My friend and I both agree that NO ONE can drive on ice. I don’t care where you live, no one drives well on ice.

I'd say we have around 4-5 inches of snow. We haven't lost our electricity yet but there are rolling blackouts all over our area. I have one frozen pipe.

We got six inches of snow at my house in Austin. it’s covering up the ice and downed tree parts in my yard. We have power, pipes are holding. My daughter doesn’t, it’s been out since last night. My mom lives in the hill country and they haven’t had power for days and also had a lot of snow overnight. Luckily they were able to move to a cabin that has propane heat to wait it out.

I'm okay so far on the SE side of Houston. Haven't lost power yet - thank goodness because the coffee brews at 4am - and pipes are good (running water in tub and kitchen sink (tub is end of the line inside) and the kitchen is running warm water to keep the flow in the hot water pipes. Finally got out of bed right as we got some snow. Streets in my 'hood are crunchy ice.
My sister in central TX (hr NW of New Braunfels) is not faring as well. Rolling outage middle of the night and one faucet froze, now power has been out for a while. On a well, so everything has frozen now (and it's been freezing temperatures there since Thursday).
BFF who lives just a couple of miles from me has been without power since before sunrise. She knows power was on at 1am because she had the dishwasher set to run then to move water. Fortunately, she has a gas stove so she's got the burners going and is cooking things (like heating up the gumbo she made yesterday).
There's SNOW on the beaches in Galveston!
Haven't heard from DB yet in Dallas.

Our pool froze last night (DFW area), so we were out at 7 this morning breaking up ice to get the pump running again. It looks like the snow covered the exhaust for the heater, causing it to shut off, and the heater is what keeps the pump running outside its scheduled times. First world problems, I know.
We haven't lost power, although I'm hearing from others who have. But our thermostat is currently at 61 (up from 59) even though it's set at 68. We had the repairman out twice last week. I don't know if there's a problem or it just can't keep up with the cold.
I hope everyone stays safe and off the roads!

I'm so glad I don't live in San Antonio anymore. Just thinking about trying to keep that house warm makes me cringe. It was old and drafty and had single pane windows. I'm a weirdo and enjoyed the hot, humid summers.
Stay safe everyone. Your whole state is colder than mine today. (Our winter has been pretty dismal)

Update from my sis: Power just came back on, but not before ALL of the plumbing under my kitchen sink exploded.
Update from my bro (via bro-in-law): So far so good. There’s 4” of snow, but we still have power. A little worried about the pool if the power goes though.

Update on my parents: still no power (since 4am), temps in house around 50°, but they were finally able to get a fire going in their fireplace and use it to cook lunch. They have 6 logs. I’m a bit worried, though. At their age, and how tiny they are, it could get dangerous fast.

Still no power since 2:09 am and now Centerpoint is saying it will most likely be tomorrow before we get it back. We are fortunate to have severe weather clothing from our time in Kazakhstan, as well as a very large supply of quilts.
We have a gas cooktop so I’ve been able to make coffee the pour it into the Yeti thermos. I was able to warm my Poptarts by putting them in a double boiler. Getting creative over here!

nutshell, when I prepared for our move to hurricane prone Florida and a totally electric house, I bought a large tray on a stand, used at banquets with stereo. That's our emergency heat and food prep system. It's not going to fry a chicken or make nachos, but will hear canned items. And our can opener is manual. 💖

My mom and her husband live about 100 miles west of Fort Worth, out in a rural area near Possum Kingdom lake. She’s 80 and he’s 85. Their power is out. Their house is total electric. I’m really worried about them, but there is no way I can go get them. The roads here are terrible and the further west you go, the roads get worse. His daughter lives about 10 miles from them, hasn’t checked on them, and won’t answer her phone or texts.

Now they’re turning off our neighborhood’s water.
Turning into a multi day no power/no water situation.
