We have horses. Horses need hay to keep their metabolism going for warmth. But with hay, they have to have water. Our water kept freezing over because we are not equipped for this weather, so we were out there every 45 minutes breaking the water up through the night. Forty five minutes seemed to be the most we could go without it freezing too thick to break without extreme effort.
Fortunately we still have power.

North side of Dallas is my location.
We had 4" of snow. DH took yardstick out and measured it.
Sister and brother live in the Denton area. Both have had rolling blackouts that last an hour. We feel so special because weh have had no black out. Then the news said that if a home is near a hospital, there will be no blackout for that neighborhood. so, Thank you, small hospital 3 blocks away.
Our house is 2 story, built in the era of one thermostat for the entire house. I set it at 66 and downstairs is cold (66). So, I am upstairs where it is a nice 72. I am able to function--but will have to go downstairs for food.
A niece in Houston has no water because her pipes are frozen--she didn't drip them enough. Rest of extended family is coping.

Us hardy Midwesterners walked to school in 3 foot snow drifts when we were in kindergarten. Uphill. (No for real I really did) But was it uphill both ways? oddly, yes because you either went up one hill and down the next or down to start and then back up ( I will say they were pretty small hills) ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

Now they’re turning off our neighborhood’s water. Turning into a multi day no power/no water situation. Yikes! That’s crazy!

North Dallas area - we have fortunately kept power so far. We have a good supply of peanut butter, crackers etc and can get out the camping stove if needed.

I am so sorry for what y’all are experiencing!
I live in an over 100 year old historic building, converted from a high school. This week during our snow I’ve been waking up to my main floor at 57, with my heat left on all night at 68. Pools of water on my window sills due to condensation. Thankfully once I turn on a couple of space heaters for a couple of hours I can get it to 63-65. Plus I have long Johns and cold weather layers at my disposal. To go all day in freezing temps, without having the right clothing, food, etc has got to be exhausting.
Noon news in Seattle is reporting what you’re experiencing as rolling blackouts. Clearly they need to look further into what is actually happening. Did they plan on a short blackout, then couldn’t get y’all back online?. Rhetorical question I guess. Regardless....I hope you and the people that you’re worried about get power back soon!
As an aside, my son was flying from NW AR to NYC yesterday. Their temps are below freezing....CRAZY! They were concerned they’d get out since so many flights were cancelled, but since they were heading out of the weather they got out, hurray! Connected in Charlottesville, NC with no issues, double hurray!
Ok....now I’m just rambling. Anyhow, thinking of you all who are freezing cold and sending warm hugs.

My mom and her husband live about 100 miles west of Fort Worth, out in a rural area near Possum Kingdom lake. She’s 80 and he’s 85. Their power is out. Their house is total electric. I’m really worried about them, but there is no way I can go get them. The roads here are terrible and the further west you go, the roads get worse. His daughter lives about 10 miles from them, hasn’t checked on them, and won’t answer her phone or texts. I hope it comes back on for them soon!

My parents and sister-in-law both have power back for now. My parents were finally able to get a fire started and were able to cook their lunch that way. Praying that it doesn’t go off for them again as they have no way to get more wood once they go through the 6 logs they have.
We just noticed that we have low water pressure in both of our tubs. The only outside wall we have is next to the master tub. I took a bath, and the water was super hot, just really slow. Hoping it’s all going to be okay.
We’re expecting another 2-6” of snow/sleet tomorrow into tomorrow night.

There is a LARGE part of the Austin metro area still without power. The power companies all say rolling blackouts but they are NOT rolling. My two good friends have been without power for over 12 hours now. I’ve been fine since 8:30. If they need to do rolling blackouts, why don’t they ROLL them so no one has to go very long without power and we can all share the burden. Seems like a huge cluster to me....

Temple/Belton area here. We got about 5, maybe 6, inches of snow and there’s a solid sheet of ice under that. There are a lot of people without power around us but we haven’t lost ours. Not even a flicker. My 86 year old mom is without power. Again. Nephew and his wife and 4 year old twins have been without since about 2 AM. No water issues here. Our pool pump has been running nonstop.
Our place in Port Aransas was without power but I don’t know for how long. It’s very cold there too. Neighbors turned our heat on low to protect our water lines. It’s an RV so not much insulation. They were also kind enough to drain lines and protect our outdoor kitchen. Hopefully everything down there is okay because we’re 5 hours away and can’t do anything about it if it’s not until we can get down there.
We’re doing good but I really hope everyone gets power back soon. It’s so cold. I am not made for this.

If your local power company is still telling you rolling blackouts, they’re lying. The governor even came out and said we’re experiencing systemwide failures at the point of generation - not only with wind power, but with natural gas and coal powered plants, too. There simply isn’t enough power being generated to keep up with demand, and apparently even the action of “rolling” the blackouts takes additional energy. And unlike every other state in the union, Texas has no power-sharing agreement with other states. We can’t ask Louisiana or Oklahoma to send some our way as another state might do. Abbott is taking heat over this on Twitter, but I’m guessing this setup dates back at least several administrations.

We're about 100 miles east of San Antonio and got about 2 inches of snow over 1/2" of ice. Our power went out yesterday from about 5 until after midnight. The poor electric company employees out there in the dark and cold! We were warm as we have a gas fireplace.
This morning we are without hot water. But, it's our own fault. We built our house three years ago and have a tankless water heater that's on the outside of the house. Totally forgot about that fact. We're used to water heaters being in the warm basement. Thank goodness our builder makes house calls! Hopefully by tonight we'll have hot water.
I really shouldn't complain, though. At least we are warm. Please stay safe and warm all you Texas peas!

I don’t know if this will help anyone, but Bloomberg reported that the Nat Guard are helping people get to shelters.
tographer: David J. Phillip/AP Photo
Texas National Guard troops are being deployed to help transport elderly residents to shelters after power was knockd out for almost 3 million people amid a record-setting winter storm.
The troops will assist local government agencies in transferring people to 135 cold-weather shelters that have been set up across the second largest U.S. state, Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement on Monday.

All of the cities (suburbs) around me are using things like the rec centers as “warming stations” and Dallas has opened the Convention Center for homeless. Everyone is in cots in one room. I think it’s just the best we can do right now.

Ugh--I hate hearing about all of the elderly without power.
We've been very lucky--about half of the colleagues I've spoken with in the DFW area are without power. As I was typing this, the weather guy just said 32% of those on the ERCOT power grid (most of Texas except far west) are without power. That's insane!

Hi all, I've been a temporary Texan for the last week helping my daughter and her girlfriend move from NC to Pflugerville. (What timing, eh?)
I landed to 60+° weather with only a sweater, planning to be back home in MD this past Sat before the forecast storm. Got as far as Dallas before the rest of my flight was cancelled into Baltimore due to freezing rain, etc. there. Ok. So I had Southwest fly me back to Austin, re-rented a vehicle and headed back to my daughter's place. Great, yes? No sleeping in the airport...well, I, for the first time ever, did not pack any additional meds thinking I'd be back home no problem. Booked the flights on what were supposed to be good weather days. (Lesson learned: find room in suitcase for every last bottle of pills prescribed, rather than just filling small travel pill case. And never trust a forecast. Duh.)
So I have no meds, which I'm not supposed to stop cold turkey or bad things will happen to me. On a weekend + army military health clinic = no one home. My daughter, bless her, after many hours of searching for a solution to this mess, finally got a hold of a medical group that actually deals with this type situation, and set up an on-line virtual emergency appointment. Well, great, yes? Except they don't prescribe one of two psych meds I absolutely needed. Holy hell. The doctor, seeing my distress and after relaying to him that pharmacies were shutting down early due to the rapidly deteriorating weather, decided to go ahead and prescribe both meds. I owe him big. But then getting the prescriptions sent and received in time to a pharmacy here was another challenge.
Anyway, we hop in my daughter's car and at a snail's pace with flashers on, we head to the nearest Walgreens, a mere 1.6 miles away, on roads that had been accumulating a skating rink slick coating of ice from freezing rain (much earlier, we had jumped in my rental and attempted to drive to a CVS "Minute Clinic," which also deals with emergency med refills FYI, but even then, driving glacially slow, I skidded through a stop sign, so we thought the better of it and crawled back to the house). Miraculously, my girl got us to the pharmacy 10 minutes before they were closing and right about the time the snow started blowing. During the return slog, the roads quickly were covered in white and visibility varied with the wind. It was quite the adventure. (Safely medicated, my body has stopped vibrating due to lack of required pharmaceuticals for 72 hours. Yay.)
My daughter had all her faucets dripping for a few days, the community posted a warning sign, so thankfully no pipe issues. The rolling blackouts started for our area at around 2 am (yes, we were still awake lol), but also fortunately short lived, about 45 minutes? This morning accumulation appears about half a foot, give or take, in the neighborhood with drifts much higher. And it seems some neighbors helpfully drove their pickup trucks around in the cul de sac, so my daughter was able to drive out through their tracks and make it to work today. It's sunny, cold and beautiful now, but wind chills are supposed to be down to lows of 10° through Fri. I have another flight out scheduled for Thurs, however hubby says there's a possibility of freezing rain/snow/nasty mix in our area. So...do I believe the weather guys? Lol.
Hope everyone affected is staying safe and warm! Hang in there💕
(The last time I was here in TX was back in Dec 1985. I was flown into Wilford Hall/Lackland AFB on military MedEvac from Ellsworth AFB SD for a surgery. We just had a blizzard and I was wearing my AF issued parka and mukluks. Stepped off the plane into practically balmy weather. Everyone I encountered asked where I got the parka...and the looks! Bahaha🤣 Fun times😁 )

Just FYI - DH and I were flying to DFW on Thursday from Amarillo and they haven't canceled our flight yet...but when we called they said they most likely would be. Just read that the Stars are still playing tonight and tomorrow night, open to fans. Sure, let's heat a stadium in these conditions. Not trying to be snarky or anything, but will they really heat the stadium? I’ve spent a lot of time at ice rinks and hockey games and I don’t think any of them have ever been heated for the benefit of guests. Not that they should be hosting games open to fans - but saving electricity by not heating a stadium probably wouldn’t be the most important reason why they shouldn’t.

I worked at Pepsi Center and have gone to many games there and at our minor league team's arena as well as S Dakota and the Prudential Center. All of them have heat. The only time I felt they didn't heat the building was an intermurual college team in the mountains. That was cold and miserable
