Did you know there is such a thing as genital shingles? It's not genital herpes, the blisters go in a straight line on only one side. I had no idea. That's your fun healthcare fact! I learned something today.

I'm looking forward to turning 50 and being eligible for the vaccine. I had chicken pox BAD when I was 5- like they reblistered over the existing blister that had popped and I was sick for at least a month. I don't want that shit reactivating!

Yes that sounds like shingles! I think you have to start the antiviral meds within 48 hours. I know the meds really helped me. Shingles can be very painful!

I had CP at 5 and had a super mild case. Then I got them again at 17 and missed a month of school. I was crazy sick and had a dr calling from Children's Hospital daily. They were worried it was going to go into my eyes. My mom had to stay home from work to take care of me as I couldn't even use the bathroom alone. Weird thing is that DH had them about 10 months prior to me having them. We were dating at the time and I didn't get them. I have no idea where I got them almost a year later, but I did give them to my younger cousins before we realized that I had them.

I have had Shingles four times. The anti virals do not help me. I am fortunate that they break out on my along my shoulder, arm and side and usually not to severe, but they leave scars. I take Advil for the pain and crumby feeling and do as much as I can tolerate to keep the lesions clean. Its awful but can now tell when I am about to break out, weird tingly skin, achy flu like all over.

I hope you were able to get to urgent care and get a prescription. I hope you feel better.
My friend just got shingles a couple weeks ago. She had just gotten her second pfizer dose a couple days before, so she was planning to get the shingles vaccine as soon as she could. But she got shingles before sppt for the shingles vaccine. She just had a mild case on her leg (which the doctor said was less common).
I plan to get a shingles vaccine as soon as possible. Our insurance will only pay if you are over a certain age. Most I know who have had shingles were in their 30s or 40s when they had them. So I don't care how much I have to pay, I still want the vaccine.

When I had it, everyone in the neighborhood came over to "play". LOL. My mom had my youngest sister as a baby to take care of at home (she was born in April- I had it in July with blisters showing up on the 4th at my aunt and uncles house) and my middle sister in the hospital recovering from bacterial meningitis at 18 months! Crazy town at our house that summer!

I had chicken pox when I was very young. My mom watched me like a hawk so that I wouldn’t pick at them, as they leave scars. You don’t see it much now, but it was not uncommon to see kids with “pockmarks,” which I guess came from “pox” marks. I have known more than a few people in their 30s and 40s who got shingles. A friend’s husband had a severe case, so much so that he had difficulty swallowing food for months. That’s when I decided to get the vaccination.
I hope that the OP was able to get some medication in time!

If you have not seen the doctor yet and still have the rash do go. I wish I would have called my regular doctor rather than seeing a doctor in the ER on the weekend due to an unrelenting headache. Misdiagnosed as a sinus infection because he did not check my eye even though I told him it hurt. Saw my regular doctor on a Monday and was diagnosed immediately with shingles in my left eye. The lesions were hiding under my eyelid. That lead to a long stint of eye doctor visits.
I was given acyclovir on day 5 and it still helped. Once herpes zoster gets in your eyes it can stay there forever. I still fight the remnants 8 years later. The cornea in my left eye was permanently damaged.

She was posting on other threads yesterday but no update here! Well I would surmise that she doesn’t have shingles after all, and that is great! Too bad she couldn’t take a moment to update tho.

They prescribed acyclovir. It's still pretty painful but not as itchy. As least I'm not contagious!

I had a mild case. It started with about 10 little bumps that itched like crazy. On my left side, near waist line. Showed everyone ( women friends ) at work, everyone thought they were bug bites. After 2 days of itching - they started to hurt a lot. A lot. I instantly went to Care Now and fortunately, I got the medicine in time. I have since been vaccinated with the newest shingle shots. Soooo glad you found it in time to get rapid treatment! My mum was 87yo and got a horrific case of shingles. By the time she felt pain and looked at her right side, it was an oozing, huge mess. Pain lasted a very long time and it took a long time for the sores to heal. I was just talking to my sister today and she urged me to get the Shingrix vaccine asap. I am two months post Pfizer dose #2 of Covid vax so could go soon.

I meant schedule permitting. I know some people who felt quick sick for 4 days after the shots, so I need to plan to be able to be sick, if you know what I mean. Of course, there's never a great time for that, but some are better than others.

A good friend and her DH both had headaches after the 2nd shingles.

I had a fairly strong reaction to the Shingrix vaccines and was sick for 2 days each time. 102 degree fever and felt like poop for 2 days running and then fine. I’ve had shingles twice, the last time being on my face in 2014, and the reactions to the shots were nothing compared to shingles itself.

I had similar reactions to the Shingrix vaccines including the fever. Definitely a good idea to plan for some down time.

Thanks elaine and Belle. I'm sorry it was such a bummer for you. I know it might happen, and I def. prefer that to getting a full blown case of shingles!

I’ll be 48 next year but am going to ask if I can get it since I had horrible chickenpox as a kid and get cold sores very frequently (also herpes, not sure if there’s a connection or not). I’ll get it right after school is out (teacher) so I can be sick if I need to. Then... I guess I’ll get it on a Friday for the 2nd.

Please get vaccinated against shingles as soon as you can. I had a mild case that I almost waited too long to get the medication for. It’s not necessarily the shingles that are the problem - I know 2 people who now have horrible, permanent nerve damage/pain that nothing can help them.

I had it when dd as 6mths old. My left hip and thigh felt raw for many days. Kind of like if someone is lightly rubbing your arm or something for too long. Then one day I was in the bathroom and looked around to the back of hip and there were a cluster of bigger zit like looking bumps. I went to the dr and she immediately was like you have shingles. It as a pretty mild case. I haven't had any issues since (she'll be 17 tomorrow).
If you've had a flare up once, is the vaccine necessary?

Because, unlike chicken pox, you can get shingles multiple times, including along different nerves.
