Update - The second quote is $450 for new motor and track with five year warranty. The spring does not need to be replaced (and if it did, it would only be $150).
I could upgrade to the $550 opener which comes with a keypad, two openers, and a lifetime warranty.
I’m going to take the upgrade and give us a pass on trying to install it. I have switched out ceiling fans and drop lighting and outlets, etc., and I’d love to potentially save around $250, but I am just a little overwhelmed at this job. Especially the track.
Anyway, I’m kind of excited about opening the door remotely from an app. Not sure I’ll ever have to use that option, but it feels so fancy!
Original thread - We were just quoted $1000 for the lowest suggested repair (this quote was just to replace the spring and the motor - not the rollers which are getting old and the track) with a three year warranty. The highest level of repair, basically replacing everything with a lifetime warranty, was $1500.
I'm going to get another quote tomorrow. But for tonight, has anyone had to repair/replace their garage door opener assembly? Is this quote even close to being reasonable?
I don't know what I was really expecting, but I was kind of bracing myself to pay around $300. I'm a little stunned!

DH said it would be about $700 here in Texas.

I had to get my tracks replaced ... and something else that I don't remember ... $600 later I'm in the wrong business ... I should own a garage door repair company

Homeadvisor, which I think might be an extension of Angi's list, says $150-500 for parts PLUS $65-85 per hour for labor. Lowe's apparently starts at $127, but the blurb doesn't say for what. I'm guessing that's not including parts. Based on Home Depot's guide, $1000 might be a little high, but perhaps you are buying a better opener or labor is a little higher in your neck of the woods.

Yikes! I saw that same thing on Homeadvisor, and forgot about parts and labor.
This is not what a fun thing to spend money on!

DH fixed ours himself for $400 or so. It took longer than he expected, but it works great. He replaced the spring, opener, and remote.

That quote sounds extremely high to me. We just had two garage door openers replaced in November. Both Liftmaster, one 3/4 hp and the other 1 hp. They were $1,299 each installed (gave us a break on the 1 hp). Have you asked what a new one would cost? It might be better cost-wise to just change it out.
ETA: I just reread your first post and realize that the cost is for a new motor and springs. Considering that you are getting a new motor, the cost is about right. We just had motors replaced - no springs or rollers - and paid $1,299 each.

I had the springs replaced last week on one double door, it came to a little over $300. Ouch! You can do this yourself for less than $50! OP, with that price, I’d just install new openers. Maybe that’s why the quote is so high? Because it’s easier for them to install new than to replace parts? If you do decide to repair, make sure the parts are available. There’s a supply shortage with a lot of items these days.

That sounds like a lot. I guess I am sometimes shocked at what others charge. We're having our grandfather clock innards replaced for $980 and our sprinkler system needed 3 valves replaced (60 minutes of work and $120 work of valves) for $420. Both of those prices were a little more than I thought.

I would youtube that repair. It may be you could order the parts and do it yourself.

Yes, we paid somewhere between $1000 and $1500 (can't quite remember but fiance was not impressed! ha) when our garage door opener quit on a Sunday and we had to call a service to come and fix it that day. So I'm sure there was a premium added there.
We got a new garage door opener (we can operate it with the garage door clickers or an app) and springs. Maybe new rollers too? Or maybe it was new rollers and not new springs. I think it was all three items but now I can't recall.
It wasn't cheap, but now fiance thinks the cost was appropriate unlike in the moment. We are in California where everything is expensive and this was a little over a year ago. Parts and labor may be a little more these days to to Covid impact.

My husband (is pretty handy )but he just watched a couple of YouTube videos on the subject, order a new motor and some parts and did the job himself. He said that it’s not that difficult.

Yikes! Changed the light bulb in our opener the other day and the 22 year old plastic case around the motor just crumbled. I figured it would be $300 - 500. to replace the motor. Guess not! The opener works fine so duct tape to the rescue. Hoping it holds out a bit longer, not attractive but better than $$$$$.

I got a new double door (very simple) and spring last summer. $1500. I thought it was a great deal, but it was the door, too.

Yes, you paid a premium for that. Most likely you were charged double time and had a minimum number of hours for a service call. If labor was $80 an hour and there was a 3 hour minimum, that would have been $80 an hour x2 hour double time=$160x3 hour minimum=$480 in labor costs. My brother is an electrician and those after hours calls bought him a new boat last year.

I am having my garage door fixed on Friday. Some big spring broke so now it won’t open thank God my car was in the driveway and not in the garage. He quoted me around $300 not sure with if that’s with labor or not. My garage door opener itself cost me maybe $300 and my dad installed it

Saw no need to look for a replacement. Serves no purpose other than to hide the light bulb.

I think between those 2 choices, I might go for the higher priced option just to save having to do the rest of the repairs a few years down the road.

I would love to think we could do this repair ourselves, but I really don’t think we should. Especially with something that could malfunction and crush me! I’m getting a second quote tomorrow. For now, I’m opening and closing it old school. Such an everyday thing that is so taken for granted - just pushing a button and having the garage door open. Especially in the rain!

If you have a community forum on Facebook, ask there for recommendations. We made the mistake of calling the company that originally installed our garage door and it ended up costing about a grand to replace the springs and a couple of other things. The sucky thing is that you have to pay a fee to have them come out to give you a quote. Then, you're kind of stuck, especially if you can't get in and out of your garage. I wish I had asked on our community forum or Yelp first. I would have learned that the company that used to be the best in the area is now the worst.

I need to charge the garage door company for me having to deal with all the phone calls I get, lol. They have the same phone number as me, but they have an 888 area code. Everyone treats it as a local number and doesn't disk the right area code. I hate the garage door company now, lol

I'm going to get another quote tomorrow. But for tonight, has anyone had to repair/replace their garage door opener assembly? They are not hard to replace. I just bought a new opener- the full kit with opener, remotes, keyless entry, and sensors plus an extension kit because it is an 8' door for $250 in my small town hardware store. I could do it myself, but I will need DH to help lift and hold it. We have replaced before and it doesn't even take that long. No wiring, since you just plug it in when you have it up. Most things are not that hard to fix on your own. YouTube is great if you are unsure of where to start and what you need. For me, the hardest part of most repairs is holding stuff. Like putting up a new light or ceiling fan. If I have someone to hold things for me - it is super easy. I can fix anything from my iPhone to installing a new ceiling fan

Much better quote this time!
I don’t use my app very often to open the door but it is great to check to see if I actually remembered to shut the garage door...especially if I’m already tucked into bed 😉

I love the app for checking to make sure I remembered to actually close the door. I rarely use it to open, but have.
