What, precisely, would that achieve? She went to the source, to Central America.

I have a random question: is it normal to refer to Kamala Harris as 'Kamala', the way the OP has done? Australians and South Africans are quite casual about referring to politicians by their first names or even nicknames e.g. our current PM (Scott Morrisson) is known as Scomo (or Scotty from Marketing 😁) and the leader of the the official opposition (Anthony Albanese) is known as Albo. TV hosts will even call former PMs by their first names during televised interviews or panel shows. But on American TV or internet boards, etc, I usually see American politicians referred to by their surnames, e.g. Trump, Biden, Obama, Cruz. I understand referring to HRC by her first name to distinguish her from Bill Clinton, and of course George W Bush was called Dubya on message boards to distinguish him from his father. But why call Kamala Harris Kamala rather than Harris? Is this a normal thing, or an OP thing? It’s a disrespect thing. (Posting at the same time as PCA, lest it appear I didn’t do my pea duty and read the entire thread before posting!) I never thought of it like that. To me, "Harris" sounds like a man. I think calling her Kamala is great because her first name is unique to her. I think Hillary was called Hillary because Bill was already referred to as Clinton so that worked too. Now that I'm thinking more about it, Michelle Obama has always been referred to with her entire name, not just "Michelle" as far as I can recall. Michelle is too common of a name so it made sense to use her entire name. I really don't think its a disrepsect thing. Obvi, nicknames are rude. Huh. Food for thought.

Bless your heart. Fucking bitch What the hell? She asked a question? And you all are liking it? Come on. No wonder so many people left. FFS. I’m not down with the second comment. But I think it’s important to note that the OP’s history suggests she did not post this to actually have a discussion, but rather to stir up trouble. She’s not here to have an honest conversation, there’s a term for that that I can not think of at the moment (thanks, fibro).

And more importantly, it’s been asked by reporters and answered by the VP herself. Continuing to ask seems to imply that there are certain secret and nefarious reasons for why Harris hasn’t visited, which is, of course, ridiculous. And it implies heavily that the OP is parroting right wing talking points without reference to their validity. I’m not interested in engaging with this particular poster, but I’m also not sorry I liked the post that criticized her. Put that on your spreadsheet. Honest political discussion doesn’t involve bad faith questions and pot-stirring. ETA: good faith conservative posters are still here. The only ones who have left are the brainwashed Trumpets who stir the pot and are “just asking questions.” Not sorry about that, either. The OP should worry more about what will happen to Texas’ economy if all the undocumented immigrants suddenly disappeared, than about whether or not Harris took a trip to the border rather than addressing the problem at its source.

I know she's been to Guatemala, but she hasn't been to Europe. Shouldn't a trip to the border be at the top of her priority list as border czar? Well, don’t you think you’re clever? Really, you’re just displaying what an out-of-touch, insufferable idiot you are. What does Europe have to do with anything? You do know it’s not a country, right? And it’s Harris or the VP to you.

I think Biden did Harris a disservice by dropping immigration on her. It was obvious that no matter how her role was defined - working with Mexico and Central America countries to address root causes is what her role actually is - there was no way this wasn't going to be a political nightmare. Immigration is incredibly difficult and complex and never going to not piss off a lot of people no matter what you do.
And Trump instituted some specific policies that exacerbated the humanitarian issues at the border and I do NOT support those policies, but he didn't cause the border crisis. Unaccompanied minors from Central America was a HUGE issue during the Obama administration and immigration in general has been an issue forever.
I wish her the best of luck - but bet this will be a liability when she runs for president.

And while I'm sure some use Kamala as a sign of disrespect - it's also pretty common for people with unusual first names to be known by them - so I wouldn't assume that someone referring to her as Kamala is denying her the respect she deserves. It's usually pretty easy to tell the difference - particularly with those who still haven't figured out how to pronounce her name.

I mean, we still don't even make $1 for every $1 that a man makes for the same exact job, and things like this are what contribute to it.

I wish her the best of luck - but bet this will be a liability when she runs for president. I agree with you. A better choice would have been someone who has a solid experience in and knowledge of Central America. And let’s not forget to acknowledge, no matter how discomfiting it is, that the US was also responsible for the political instability that caused deaths and poverty in Central America, especially in the ‘80s. We played a huge part in destabilizing these countries, the effects of which we’re still seeing to this day. And yes, it’s complex and very difficult to try and solve. If we’re to tackle the root causes of the present problems, just continuously throwing money at it doesn’t do much as prior decades have already shown. These countries are mired in so much poverty, violence and corruption that even if we handed our entire revenue to them, the problem will still persist. I think Harris is trying to get as much cooperation as possible from them to at least mitigate some of the problems plaguing Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Unless someone can come up with a better plan, she's doing what she's been tasked.

I could not care less if VP Harris has been to the border. I think photo ops for the msm are disingenuous and just pandering for support from their followers or for votes. It is lip service. What I care about is what people are actually doing to help a cause.
However, I have long voiced my displeasure of the hypocrisy of the board when it comes to politics. Honest question for those who are passive aggressively saying how cute or how sweet...is the same done to freddy? Just curious how it is different with her because I don't see her discussing or following up on her threads. She just posts tweet after tweet and insert a few news articles. As I have stated many times both parties are guilty of doing it and I am frustrated with both sides.

Thank you to those of you who opted for a thoughtful response as to why Kamala Harris might not think a trip to the border is important. To those of you who just chose to denigrate me, well you never fail to perpetuate your stereotype. Whether you like my posting style or not, you choose whether and how to respond. If you choose to respond with insults and vulgarities, that's on you.
Yes, I watch Fox News; they raise questions that we all should be asking at this point. Is there ever a time that you question what your political party is or is not doing right now?
I think she should go to the border at least in support of the efforts that are being made to control the uncontrollable situation. It doesn't have to be a PR move. Women are great problem solvers; she might have an epiphany moment that could be helpful. Just saying "the border is closed; don't come" was the PR move.

Calling her Kamala is definitely used as a sign of disrespect; as pointed out above, no one called Pence "Mike". Fox and the conservatives have a long history of putting down women in power. It makes them feel bigger.
That being obvious, I'm not sure why anyone took the OP's bait. Y'all simply must have been treading the waters looking for chum.

Much respect to oh yvonne and keriwest for considering the opinions/impact of referring to the VP by using only her first name and doing differently going forward! I remember how many people brought it to Skybar’s attention that referring to the then president as BO was denigrating and she dug her heels in and continued. It means a lot!

A lot of times I refer to Kamala as Kamala because she is from my neck of the woods and I have been following her career ever since she was San Francisco’s DA. She was also my first choice for President so I feel like I know her so I call her by her first name.
Having said that, if I think the occasion calls for it I will call her VP Harris or The Vice President.

She had an older ad where several kids said her first Name. It may be from her first campaign. That ad seems To suggest that she doesn’t have a problem with her first name being used as long as it is pronounced right. Does she really need to follow in the footsteps of all the male VPs before her? Let her blaze her own trail. It’s OK to be different and not follow the male lead

I'm surprised Fox News took a break from infuriating people about trans teenage athletes and race baiting about critical race theory to start riling people about Kamala and the border. I suppose this means we'll soon seen alarmist posts about disease filled caravans of terrorists and criminals marching to the US.

Is this or how is this different from the criticism GW Bush got when he didn't immediately go to New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina? They kind of seem like the same thing to me. In both cases, their presence in the actual location doesn't lessen the impact of the crisis.
