I get my second vaccine tomorrow.
DH, who had to wait longer (younger than I am, plus I have a medical issue), tried to book his today. He can't get in anywhere at the AHC facilities in Airdrie or Calgary. The closest is Red Deer or Rocky Mountain House and that's too far to take time off during the workday to drive. They're patting themselves on the back about the great availability, but not it's not. So he's signed up to get a call from a pharmacy.

I'm ok with the border staying closed a bit longer.

My DH and my sister both had second shots at Telus convention centre last week and said it wasn’t busy and they had tons of stations open. That was before they opened up with the new criteria though.

That's great! I wonder why they haven't been able to work something out here. I'm a Point Roberts resident. We've officially been exempt from the negative Covid test since February. That being said, we still are subject to the "essential" travel requirements JUST to drive THROUGH Canada to mainland Washington. Although we personally have not had any problems getting through the border when we need to, there are several residents here who have been denied crossing through even though they had a valid essential reason. The general consensus here is that if we are simply driving through, without stopping for any reason in Canada, there shouldn't be any "essential" reason required. However, we are subject to Canada's requirements until the border completely opens! Crazy, just crazy. Your community was back in the news today, with stories about the businesses that have had to close due to the continued situation at the border. Also, that your only grocery story is planning on closing on July 15 unless something changes. Sounds a little dire out there.

My cousins would be driving. They are in Woodstock and their dad lives outside Buffalo... Ahh. Someone else may have suggestions, but my understanding is they won't be able to cross the land border. That’s my understanding, too. I have relatives in Toronto and they told me last week I still couldn’t visit. I’ve never flown to Canada; I used to take the train and when that route ended, I would just drive from Chicago to Detroit and then to Toronto. They told me I cannot enter either way.

So Canadians cannot come into the US?? In theory, the (land) border is closed. In practice, flights are available and Canadians have been flying to the US for months now. I'm not going to pretend it makes sense. We spent the weekend at a resort that is so close to the WA/BC border, that you can see the crossing from certain spots in the restaurant. I overheard a woman saying she lives in a Canadian border town and was at the resort to get away and relax. Clearly, she was able to cross in her car.

This reminds me of some of the people who "qualified" (and I use that term VERY loosely) to get their vaccine earlier than their age group/health status. Someone will always find a loophole, and it sounds like somehow the Canadians convinced the border agents that their trip to the US was "essential." I hope you had a wonderful time away. I think I know where you went, and I've always wanted to spend a couple of nights there just to relax and enjoy!

Our grocery store owner put a statement on our local Next Door page here. She is very much hoping she can stay open, but if things don't change quickly, she will indeed have to close. She is hoping her closure would be temporary until the border opens and she can regain business from the Canadians, but in the meantime, there is virtually nowhere else here to buy real groceries. People have repeatedly written to their legislators, etc., but without much success. In order to cross the border and go to Blaine or Bellingham, lots of people have "prescriptions to pick up" or "medical appointments"!!

It does not seem to matter how many people are there, the resort never feels full. They work some kind of magic up there! Most of our trips have been during the winter, so being there in the summer was a ton of fun. Morning coffee, in an Adirondack chair, on an almost empty beach...priceless.

It's just across the water from White Rock, BC. The tide was so low on Monday morning, I swear we could have walked to Canada!

Magic + morning coffee outside in beachside air. ❤️ I’m thinking 2 nights, yes? ETA: I just looked up pricing on their site and have 2 questions. The first is, do you use the spa when you’re there, and if so, what do you think of it? And the second, are you aware of any discounts beyond AARP, military, etc on their site? Thanks! ETA2: I just realized I was looking at pricing for what appears their most expensive week in August. Pricing isn’t too bad the rest of the time 🙃

and it sounds like somehow the Canadians convinced the border agents that their trip to the US was "essential." It is rather difficult to convince US Border Patrol to cross the border. They require a note from your family doctor if it is for a medical appointment and they also require proof that there is a true medical appointment at an American medical facility. Also needed is a note from the medical facility that you attended in the USA. I know this as I have been receiving medical treatment in Buffalo. I live near Niagara Falls NY. There are a LOT of hoops to go thru and the information is not easily given out, by either side of the border.

Pricing isn’t too bad the rest of the time 🙃 I went to the spa for a haircut once, years ago. Other than that, I haven't used spa services. They do run specials throughout the year. If you get on their email list, they'll send them your way. They do not send an obnoxious number of emails. Sometimes their specials are in the form of resort credits, which you can use for the spa, restaurants, etc. Winter rates are lower, but I love being up there during winter!

The whole family is now vaccinated in RD, first doses through centrism and second doses through pharmacy. Hope you find a locale.

One of my bosses just told me that her husband called 811 and they told him they were expecting more doses Thursday or Friday of this week. That could open up spots.
I'm vaccinated, we just need DH to get his second one.

Hope so! I went through all the steps today to book for DS and at the end it said no shots available. 🙄

So my cousin who was supposed to come to the US today (which boggles my mind since all we keep hearing is the border to the US and vice versa is closed to nonessential travel) to see her father she has not seen in 2 years now isn't coming because "Too much work to get back"...WTF??? I thought all Canadians had to do was test negative and prove they were vaccinated??? So confused

I didn't think so either. At least no one told her 95 year old dad she might be coming. I honestly don't think she could come across the US border. Everything here references Canadians getting back into their country. I believe the US border is still closed to Canadians

If she's flying into the US then it would be no problem, its just crossing the land border that's not allowed for non-essential travel. Which doesn't really make sense.

The PM said yesterday that "we are not there yet, but we are getting closer" when answering questions in BC. We will assume they are going to extend it another month and to work on the phased in approach for opening.
