My state already provides free college tuition for families that make less than $125,000 a year. My state also provides paid family leave, protects reproductive rights, protects the rights of the LGBTQ+ rights and voting rights for all its citizens. Surely you recognize how ridiculous you sound here. “My state is great, these problems don’t affect me or mine, so fuck off all y’all with your wokeness.”

Not what I said, not what I meant and you are so far on top of your grandstand at all times that you can't bother to see how ridiculous you sound. Love to know what you are doing to make changes in the world other than spouting your beliefs on a message board. Exactly the reason why I said I don't debate politics here. There is no room in your mind for a view other than what you believe is the only way forward. My state already provides free college tuition for families that make less than $125,000 a year. My state also provides paid family leave, protects reproductive rights, protects the rights of the LGBTQ+ rights and voting rights for all its citizens. It is my belief that it is not up to the federal government to do these things. It's up to the individual states. You don't like the way your state protects its citizens? Get involved in politics or move. That’s great that your state provides those things, but many deep red states do not. Moving is not always an option for people for a vast variety of reasons - jobs, family proximity, expense of moving, cost of living differences etc. And being involved in politics is admirable, but in some states, it will not change anything in the short term. Just look at how so many states are passing voter suppression laws, restricting reproductive rights etc. With Republican led legislatures and gerrymandering, there’s not a lot of hope that things will change.

My feelings as a WOC have nothing to do with being pissed off Obama was the President. A dick is a dick and I don't want some stranger's d swinging free in my presence. UGh disgusting. actually, I think this Puritanistic attitude (not yours specifically, oh yvonne , I'm speaking in a GENERAL sense-- your comment is just what started me thinking about it) is [possibly] part of what feeds into the Evangelical 'Christian' right movement. Or maybe the Evangelical 'Christian' attitudes feeds the Puritanistic attitudes. Not sure which came first, like the chicken and the egg. But this country was settled very early on by a LOT of Puritans with very rigid attitudes about MANY, MANY things. What does seeing a penis really DO to someone, anyway, in a situation like that? Or seeing women's breasts? They're body parts. Would it have been acceptable for a biological woman to be nude in that situation? That's a tough one... But if it's not inappropriate to the situation (like it would be inappropriate in a restaurant kitchen where it would be a safety violation as well as violating the health codes) then what really would happen? Women have breasts for feeding their babies, like cows have udders for feeding theirs. Men have penises... so what. Why is it bad to see that we have different bodies? I guess it's more of a rhetorical sort of musing: If this country had been a little more 'live and let live' when it was founded instead of the prevalence of rigid, repressive Puritans, I wonder if this right-wing vs. 'libs' debate would be so very fierce now. I'm not sure if this difference is so extreme in European countries that DON'T have the Evangelical Christian presence. ARE there even any other countries (that are not theocracies) that have an equivalent to that group?? I admit find people clinging to the puritanical heritage of this country a bit bizarre. One of the bonuses of being founded as a convict nation, I guess. 😏🤣

ARE there even any other countries (that are not theocracies) that have an equivalent to that group?? I agree. I don’t find a man’s swinging d any more offensive than some lady’s boobs hanging to her navel or her sitting spread-legged on the bench in the gym locker room. (Because I don’t care to see those things, I avert my eyes rather than throwing a fit.) Presumably the male children on the women/children side of the spa also have penises. It’s not like none of the women or girls there have never seen one. I’ve been listening to the audio book for The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. It’s realistic fiction that starts with dust bowl northern Texas and ends up in California during the depression. The attitude of the people of California to the “okies” - homeless, living poverty, dirty and sometimes diseased - has a strong parallel with the attitude of Americans toward the homeless today. When you set up a society that is rigged in certain peoples’ favor, and where success relies a lot more on good luck than hard work, you’re going to end up with people on the fringes. I’m not really sure what homelessness has to do with progressive social policy - the right wing narrative seems to be that because we don’t support throwing homeless people in jail, we must think that homeless people pooping in the street is awesome! - but I think it’s worth examining our attitudes. Justice delayed is justice denied. Why should the closed-minded and bigoted get to say that they need more time to get used to other people having basic human rights? That’s a great book.

I saw the viral video of the AA woman at the Korean family day spa in LA where she was outraged that a male parts person id'ing as a woman went full Monty in the women's spa. I know these spas in K-town in downtown LA. Entire families spend the day there. Literally stay all day, eat lunch and socialize there as a family. Women and children in one section, men on the other. Strictly segregated as their culture dictates for generations. The right predicted this would happen and now it has. I'm not here to argue the point, the Spa has their hands tied because of the law and meanwhile the women and children who were exposed to this are beyond upset. If it were me and my daughter there, hell yeah would I be pissed! Do they have to make it more specific like "no male $#@ organs allowed"? IDK but its stuff like this that I think 'great, more ammo for the extreme right". My feelings as a WOC have nothing to do with being pissed off Obama was the President. It smacks of “I’ve got these things because of what place in the country I live - but it’s up to y’all to get your own”. 😲 No matter if those states are heavily gerrymandered in order to maintain the status quo (something that will require federal legislation to address) or not. I’ve got mine screw the rest of you. Wow. *United* States indeed.

Violence Over a Transphobic Hoax Shows the Danger of Underestimating Anti-Trans Hate
How sad and disgusting that it apparently was a hoax. I have been haunted by reading the sentiments attached to this here. Let’s say for a minute that it was true, that there was a trans woman in the women’s locker room. Why is one person’s/a couple of people’s discomfort with that so much more important than forcing a trans woman to use men’s bathrooms in public and locker rooms forcing them to “out” themselves to men? There is a problem with real physical violence against trans women. At least 26 trans women were killed in 2019, and that doesn’t include non-fatal violence. yourdream.liveyourdream.org/2021/06/violence-against-transgender-women-a-growing-crisis/ In 2020, 46 transgender people were killed - the majority being women of color. www.hrc.org/resources/violence-against-the-trans-and-gender-non-conforming-community-in-2020?utm_source=GS&utm_medium=AD&utm_campaign=BPI-HRC-Grant&utm_content=454864016076&utm_term=hate%20crimes&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_8mHBhClARIsABfFgpi8j4MDFjQY2so3418wk6MuKPMmRJafsPGwt-iCWY1Ws21na8rCbRkaAk5SEALw_wcBIf 46 people were killed last year just for being Christian, you can damn well bet that there would be protection laws in 50 states and at the federal level passed for them. There wouldn’t be any boo-hoo’ing about doing whatever could be done to protect them. There would be National outrage. Instead, we have outrage at the thought that someone might see a penis. I just can’t wrap my head around thinking that ensuring that someone who is attending a Korean spa (I live less than a mile from the largest one in Northern VA, where my kids’ school communications come home in English on one side and Korean on the other) - where nudity is on full display for hours on end - not see a penis is more important that doing what we can to ensure that trans women can use bathrooms and locker rooms that they feel safe in. They are a segment of the population that is literally being killed for who they are - and mainly by cis men. Why would anyone with a heart think that repealing trans bathroom protection laws is a good thing? (As an aside, I think that having a child (which evidently the person who made the video actually didn’t have with her) see what my “breasts” look like naked would more traumatizing than seeing a penis. I don’t change in public in locker rooms any more because of it and won’t ever go back to my local Korean Spa. But no one is trying to take away my rights to be there if I chose to do so.)

"Perhaps this is why outrage over the possibility that a trans woman may have changed her clothes in the appropriate facilities grew and grew, culminating in the protest outside Wi Spa, which included a contingent of violent extremists from the far right. The two stabbing victims were attacked by an anti-trans protester: One was a counterprotester; the other apparently a “friendly stab” incident where a fellow protester was hit by mistake.
Anti-trans activism is often thought of as a sideshow or a distraction, but these events show the real dangers of an increasingly extremist anti-trans backlash. In this case, an uncorroborated suggestion that a trans woman was using a women’s space ignited a protest that resulted in violence and led to a woman being hospitalized. That there was likely no trans woman there to begin with only underscores how thin a pretext is needed to prompt these sorts of outbursts from the far right. Trans people and our allies should not ignore the growing anti-trans sentiment in this country."
from link above
My trans child is far more likely to be hounded, hurt, or worse for their trans-ness than any person is likely to be hurt by seeing a naked body or body part or for their trans-hatred.
But, yes, let's keep pretending trans-people just go out of their way to piss of the armed and ignorant.

I couldn’t find the link in the post above and curious what happened… From Slate. link” Violence Over a Transphobic Hoax Shows the Danger of Underestimating Anti-Trans Hate”“Police suspect the viral L.A. Wi Spa video is fake—but it still got two people stabbed. On July 3, an anti-transgender protest outside a Los Angeles spa resulted in two stabbings—all over a social media post that police are now treating as a hoax. Back on June 24, a user called cubanangel posted a video on Instagram showing her and at least two other women confronting a staff member at Wi Spa on Wilshire Boulevard in Koreatown about having seen “a man with a penis” in the women’s changing area. “I’m recording this because I’m gonna make a big deal. I’m gonna take this very worldwide,” she explains, kicking off four minutes berating the staff member over the queer-friendly spa’s nondiscrimination policy. Soon after the video began to go viral in transphobic corners of the internet, members of the trans community began to raise questions about it—chief among them why the video cuts out as the woman marches downstairs to confront this person she’s allegedly seen, conveniently ending before the trans woman she’s so angry about is shown. The woman also repeatedly mentions children being exposed to a penis, while no children appear on the video and the group don’t appear to have any children with them. These early doubts have been bolstered by reporting from the Los Angeles Blade that police suspect a hoax after failing to find witnesses who saw a trans woman at the spa, and that Wi Spa claims none of their trans clients had scheduled appointments that day. To understand why this incident is so disturbing, it’s worth being clear about what the hoax is even claiming: that a trans woman used a changing room that she was fully allowed to use … on a day when no trans women actually happened to be using it. There was no specific claim of wrongdoing or inappropriate conduct on the part of this alleged person, although the colorful language used in the video certainly sparks the imagination, likely leading those with a transphobic cast of mind to fill the vacuum of facts with horrific acts of lewdness or indecency. Perhaps this is why outrage over the possibility that a trans woman may have changed her clothes in the appropriate facilities grew and grew, culminating in the protest outside Wi Spa, which included a contingent of violent extremists from the far right. The two stabbing victims were attacked by an anti-trans protester: One was a counterprotester; the other apparently a “friendly stab” incident where a fellow protester was hit by mistake. There are a whoooole lot of us who are in the middle and hate what's happening on both sides. I'm not going to continue to argue here, I'm far outnumbered. But that's what I'm seeing and I think that article is scarily accurate, even if people don't want to believe it, I believe that's exactly what's going to happen. I'm with you. There are far more peas that are so far left I just can't debate. I just read and cringe. While I think "wokeness" is a derogatory term used to desribe liberal leaning people, I don't disagree that the more Democrats push for such a far left agenda, the better chance Trump has to become president again. I have a question….. Definition of wokeness…. “Woke was officially added into the Oxford English Dictionary as an adjective in June 2017. The dictionary defines it as “originally: well-informed, up-to-date. Now chiefly: alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice”. The Urban Dictionary, which published its original definition two years prior to the official dictionary, defines it as “being woke means being aware… knowing what’s going on in the community (related to racism and social injustice)”. In other words, it means to be awake to sensitive social issues, such as racism.” My question is why do you think “ woke” is a derogatory term? I mean shouldn’t we all be aware of social injustice in our communities , in our country and work toward eliminating it? I have never understood how its ok for one group of people to discriminate against another group of people based solely on the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, or the fact they are a woman. Just don’t get it. It really is a huge black eye on this country that we allow it to happen.

I am the mother of a trans kid. She recently came out and I have had only months to process this. My initial reaction was relief. Because this helps explain some of the recent suicide attempts. She is bipolar, has autism, and is taking hormones for the past 6 months. I think the introduction of hormones upset the balance of her bipolar medications and now I hope we have that under control. So I feel relief on that end.
With that said, I feel fear. Fear that society is not going to react to my child in a good way. Fear that she will be discriminated against to the point that she will attempt to take her own life again. Fear that she will be harmed by someone who is not "woke". And I'm trying to figure out how I can best advocate for her and support her as she makes this transition.
And I think it may be easy to poo poo the side that is against these social changes...when it doesn't affect you directly. I think until it's personal to you, maybe you don't understand. I can't imagine being the person affected directly but I know the fear of loving someone who is. So please before you say that society needs time to adjust, before you say that all people are not going to be accepting, think of that fear a mother may have for their child. I frankly do not have time for society to adjust. My child's health and safety depends on you being "woke". Put yourself in my shoes.

What a rough road - I hope with a happy ending. Stories like yours are so important. There is no reason we as a society need to keep trying to crush those who don’t meet some arbitrary standard - as you say, so many in crisis can’t afford to wait until others are comfortable.

Yes, I’m unapologetically “far left,” because I happen to think that people’s human rights should not be subject to the comfort level of others, and that we do better as a society when everyone has a fair shot at what we used to call the American dream (now the American fantasy for many/most). These aren’t actually “far left” positions in most of the world, BTW. They’re common sense center left. But our country is so determined to make sure that bigots and billionaires are comfortable at everyone else’s expense, that my views seem “far left.” I will not be bullied into fighting for less than every American deserves with threats that doing so will ensure another Trump win. If Trump wins, that’s entirely the responsibility of the millions of fools who vote for him. And I don’t owe them a thing. Yes!!!! 1,000,000 times yes!

Their religious views are not and should not be a matter of policy, nor should they be used to harm the lives of others (and they are). You mean some of these “socialist” ideas—- Defund the police? Actively the only people defunding the police are the Republican Party in congress (yet they scream that it’s the democrats) Equal rights, marriage for LBGTQ? The only party trying to eliminate gays are republicans, moderate-to far right. Equality for POC? Why then are republicans hell bent on suppressing their voices, treating them than lesser than? Their voting record in congress shows that they really don’t give a shit about POC.

It boggles the mind that people can’t see a connection between growing income disparity/economic injustice and things like homelessness, crime, and violence. I guess they’d prefer that people who end up homeless or in poverty should just quietly sit out of sight and hope that someone remembers to toss them some scraps. (If you’re worried about crime, make sure your public schools are funded better than your prisons and actively work to dismantle the barriers that keep so many from success. I love how folks are quick to say that progressive policies are responsible for Trump votes, but no one is able to see how conservative policies contribute to crime, lawlessness, and homelessness.) Saw my racist, homophobic, trump loving BIL today and all he did was spout off that people were lazy, didn’t want to work, and tgat those who work at McDonald’s shouldn’t expect more than minimum wage. Said the dole cause if worker shortage is because if government hand outs and stimulus—that they’re living off if it!! I told him he was ridiculous. The extra unemployment ended here awhile ago, the stimulus likely only covered a month or two of rent/utilities so there is no way that “these lazy people” were living off the extra. He complained that the stimulus was why our gas prices are high. I asked him what the profits were from a lot of businesses who pay shitty wages. Told him that the oil/gas owners were raking in billions. So was Walmart…. He said that’s a god given American right capitalism. I kept asking for specifics and he fumbled—because he’s only learned the propaganda talking points!!

While I think "wokeness" is a derogatory term used to desribe liberal leaning people, I don't disagree that the more Democrats push for such a far left agenda, the better chance Trump has to become president again. A couple of days ago I asked the question about why was “wokeness” a derogatory word when it means being aware. Of course I didn’t expect an answer. I had planned on ignoring a couple of other nuggets in these two posts that I have questions about but I made the mistake of reading the news on Twitter. My take away from this morning is Ted Cruz is a lying ass and dumpster don is a dangerous psychopath. Cruz is ginning up the rhetoric about immigration at the border with lies. And dumpster don is basically telling his followers not to get vaccinated and trying to make it all President Biden’s fault. Would someone please provide examples of the Democrats doing crap like this? Seriously. There are none. So I’m assuming what the Democrats are doing that is “hated” are the pesky social issues the Democrats push. To me social issues are people and how they live their lives because of who they are and the push back by some is because they are uncomfortable with it. No other reason, it’s just they are uncomfortable. An example was given on this thread about an action by a transgender.. The comment following it was the Republicans warned this would happen. It was shown to be a hoax and didn’t happen. But for a minute say it did happen? It simply would have been bad behavior by one individual and not indicate of all transgenders. So if you (General you) have a problem with social issues and want to punish folks for being who they are and not who think they should be because you are uncomfortable with it then the problem is with you and not the Democrats who feel it’s important for people to be able to live their true lives. As far as this “just so far left”, just what exactly does that mean? Or is “so far left” the social issues. But the question those who have a problem with a “far left agenda” should be asking themselves is just exactly what has the right offered as an alternative to this “far left agenda”? Anything? Have they offered anything to make this country a better place for all Americans?

These aren’t actually “far left” positions in most of the world, BTW. They’re common sense center left. But our country is so determined to make sure that bigots and billionaires are comfortable at everyone else’s expense, that my views seem “far left.” I will not be bullied into fighting for less than every American deserves with threats that doing so will ensure another Trump win. If Trump wins, that’s entirely the responsibility of the millions of fools who vote for him. And I don’t owe them a thing. Here is where you’re wrong IMO. If trump should run and win then it’s just as much the Democrats fault as it is the idiots who voted for him. It would mean the Democrats didn’t do a good enough job in selling our vision/plans for a better America. It will mean, once again, they let the Republicans, who have absolutely nothing to offer, control the narrative. The ONLY way we get things done is to win elections, on the local level, on the state level, and on the federal level and it can’t be done unless we get independents and yes Republicans to join us.

I don’t think “wokeness” is the biggest threat to democrats. I think the biggest threat is that people are willing to believe anything Fox News tells them with no questions asked and no critical thinking. i agree - although i think the rise of T---- came out of having a Black president. I really do.

Has the least who brought up the transgender issue come back to acknowledge that this was a hoax?
People also pick and choose what they have a problem with. That is one example (caring so much about seeing a penis but not naked women). The other day someone told me that she won’t shop at target since they “let people use the bathroom they associate with the day” stating that they aren’t going to put their kids at risk of being abused in a bathroom by a pedophile. When I asked if she was scared of her boys going in the men’s bathroom, she said did she just goes in, even though sometimes it’s awkward if a man is at the urinal. No recognition that her going into a men’s bathroom is a violation of THEIR privacy. She is also a very devout Catholic and IMO, her kids have a higher chance of being molested their than in a public bathroom.

And all I can do at what I bolded / changed to blue is shake my head. The stupidity and hypocrisy *still* amazes me, even though I guess by now it shouldn't any longer.

Thank you for posting this. A close family member is trans, and for me there is no "two sides." I want him to be able to live his life without discrimination, threats, assault, even death. The hatred and violence coming from the Right is frightening, and it's being fueled by politicians and conservative media outlets in a firehose of lies. The term "Woke" is the new "politically correct." It's used to shut people down, shut people up, and reduce different points of view to an empty strawman that they can ridicule.

Ok. Has it occurred to you that when we cave to anti-LGBTQ folks in “not going too far left” that we ARE letting the Republicans control the narrative? This is basic human rights stuff. It shouldn’t be right or left. Buying the lie that we need to wait until people are ready is letting someone else control the narrative. Refusing to concede that our positions are anything other than common sense and justice is how we control it. IMO. (If someone has bought the Fox koolaid, they will never vote for us anyway, no matter how far center we move.)

I’m a very moderate Democrat and I agree that LGBTQ rights span all shades of the Democratic Party. It is as absurd as trying to say that only progressives or the extreme left care about racism and sexism and that the rest of the party is getting forcefully dragged along behind them. The GOP is controlling the narrative re: LGBTQ rights. They are basic human rights. And if you don’t believe in basic human rights, I don’t think that you are a Democrat, even if you choose to self-label that way. They aren’t something that only the most left-leaning in the Democratic Party champion - they are what the party stands for, the whole party.

Merge said: This is basic human rights stuff. It shouldn’t be right or left. Amen. These issues should never be political. They are humanity related issues. How sad is it that half our country is willing to let racism, misogyny, xenophobia, religious bigotry stand in the way of other people's right to just live their lives in peace and freedom?

Cruz is ginning up the rhetoric about immigration at the border with lies. And dumpster don is basically telling his followers not to get vaccinated and trying to make it all President Biden’s fault. Would someone please provide examples of the Democrats doing crap like this? Seriously. There are none. Can you post a link to Cruz's lies about the border and a link to Trump telling people not to get vaccinated? All I can see is headlines saying Trump is telling people to GET vaccinated.

That is the message being drummed on RW media. It frustrates me that so many folks listen to this stuff and don’t question it. And you’re right; they have very few facts to back it up. I read this weekend that some unvaccinated people who got Covid still don’t want the vaccine. That’s some high quality brainwashing right there. I hear it daily.
